I just started collecting baseball cards February 2023 so this video reminds me of how I started out thinking of who I should start looking up as my fav player and machado instantly came to mind lol thanks to people like y’all and your videos made it easier so thank y’all!
I collect the players I like, from the teams I like, regardless of monetary value. However, it's always a plus if the card/s gain value, but I don't really care. I rarely buy singles, unless it's one of my dudes, as I really enjoy ripping! Great video, as always, thanks for sharing!!
Good for you, I’ll never rip a topps product again. I couldn’t keep count of how many topps jumbo boxes I ripped open to the surprise total of $5 worth of cards in 2023. Never again. Don’t know how you do it, but thank you and all you other rippers out there for your sacrifice

Great episode-thanks, gentlemen. I subscribe to much of the collecting philosophy espoused by Jeff and Chris. Focus on players that I like/identify with and try to identify and target cards of those players that will maintain their significance over time. Regarding Fanatics and grading, I think that Fanatics will enter the grading space sooner or later. Fanatics is trying to build an ecosystem. Buy Topps and Bowman cards, get them graded, and send them over to the PWCC vault to access the marketplace or back home to enjoy in-hand.
I’m glad Trea Turner is getting some love. I liked him since he was a rookie in Washington. Now that I have an adult job I’ve been trying to make up for lost time by collecting the Nationals cards. Thank you for the great topic!
Definitely agree with Jeff’s P.O.V. on acquiring a players cards excellent move imo PSA buying out SGC now PSA can have SGC handle the vintage submissions if that’s the case we’ll see in time what purpose PSA has in mind for SGC
Collectors aquistion of SGC in my opinion was a defensive move against Fanatics. A good decision to maintain their lead. I can see PSA utilizing SGC grading capacity and fast turnaround times to help PSA labeled cards fast to the customers. For my PC I will still grade with SGC.
For baseball, I only collect Mattingly, Jeter, and Judge (Cole, somewhat). I don’t usually care how much they’re worth unless it’s for their higher end cards. For football, I pc Elway, Terrell Davis, and Champ Bailey (who I sat next to on a plan ride once!). Oh, and Peyton Manning in a Broncos uniform.
Those seem like safe PC targets to me. Chris here, I do worry about Judge playing CF - seems absolutely insane to me. Mattingly was so great. I was almost 40 before I finally owned an 84 Donruss Mattingly and it was just as exciting as I’d hoped it would be!

I had only the O-Pee-Chee 84 Mattingly rookie until I was an adult. 😂 Even tho I had that one, I happy that I bought the 84 Topps Mattingly and sent it to PSA. It was a little off centered but it got a 9. I’ll take it!

As someone that has graded with both over the past couple of years, I am not really changing my options for the time being. They are staying separate for now, and until that changes, the acquisition had no impact on me.
I can thank Scotty B and my mutual appreciation for number-crunching for my development of a nice Gerrit Cole RC collection. Over a few of his videos, Scotty mentioned Verlander, Scherzer, Greinke & Kershaw. And I felt like ‘their legacies are set….. so who’s next but no-one’s talking about them not as an ‘active HOFer’, but just a really good current pitcher right now ?’. They also had to be actual results now, not just youth/‘potential’ down the road. (I also deliberately went for pitchers as this was the time when anyone with talent and the chance to bat had cards priced crazy high. Pitchers sat nicely within my budget.) I got nerdy beyond belief, with an excel spreadsheet and crunching Baseball Reference numbers. And what it spit out (to me) was that Kershaw’s stats were 20% better/faster/younger than his 3 other current contemporaries, but when I stacked Gerrit, Justin and Max by a bunch of metrics, Gerrit’s on track to be as good as them if he gets to a similar stage of his career that Justin & Max are at now. I got some great low numbered 2013 Topps Chrome on-card autos as 2022 ended (a year where Gerrit received one solitary Cy Young vote) and was very happy to see him finally win the Cy in 2023, adding another pillar to his HOF case. I also crunched those same numbers again with some pitchers just behind Gerrit and rolled the dice with some Aaron Nola RCs. His trajectory is different, but the entry cost was really affordable and I can now enjoy his and Gerrit’s journeys for the rest of the 2020s pretty much. :)
A Gerrit Cole rookie card collection sounds like a good idea to me. Chris here - both jeff and I targeted some Cole this off season. I support your number crunching!!
@@fooman27jenkins44 amazingly, Carter might be more expensive than Ripkens! Just be careful with Carter cards. Most of his base stuff will be so over printed there’s almost now way for any of it to hold value. Maybe look for a topps ssp, or black parallel. Good luck!

Great discussion as always! Sort of a variation on what you discussed but would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the best time in a player’s career to purchase their cards. There’s the hype and promise of greatness at the start of the career - though obviously most players bomb out for one reason or another. Then they generally peak around ages 25-30 and so do their cards. Seems like late career when they’re on the downside - or a year or 2 after retirement but before HOF - is optimal for buying. It’s a bit less fun as a collector to say ‘this guys awesome! I’m gonna buy his cards in 14 years when he’s fat but had a great 10 year streak.’ Griffey and Pujols both had this. Even Tom Brady’s cards were down around mid-career after first 3 SBs. Would also be curious to hear your thoughts on players that have retired in last few years. Sort of the lost generation from cards pov. Pujols in particular (IMO) is one of the top 2-3 players in last 40-50 years. Besides his Bowman Chrome auto - always surprised how inexpensive most of his cards are. Can’t imagine what his cards would cost if he had debuted in last few years and had stats like his first 10-12 years. Keep up the great content guys!
Nats fan here. won WS then all my favorite players now play on division rival or evil empire. Nats never have good checklist. Collecting James Wood, CJ Abrams, Colton Cowser, Adley, and Bobby Witt. Only all in on Witt and Adley.
I am a sucker. I will anything cheap stamped RC, then I look for a rare-ish color match, or an on card auto. Love Red and Blue cards (orange for Orioles).

If Topps don't quit making a million of each card,100 different parralles and 50 1 of 1s it won't matter how good a player is it still won't have much value. I been collecting since 1984 and this is looking just like 1986 all over again. Greed kills every thing good!

Good points. As a collector, I just want cards. Most current cards will be worth about as much as a Gregg Jeffrries rookie so why spend too much. A few sellers will make some bucks and Topps/Panini makes a fortune selling the same shiny things over and over. Retired players have more cards now than when they played.

Funny people think psa purchased sgc, and that is not the case. Rather than assuming that the sgc family should worry about this purchase, how do those part of the psa family think about sgc being purchased by their parent company? For my reasons, I have always used and will continue to use sgc as they have been very consistent with grading and, as a collector, sgc seems to always put the collector first. By that, I mean fast turnaround times, virtually one simple price regardless of card with free autograph grading, no yearly fee needed like others and my favorite is you can actually call and or email someone and you will get someone there at sgc. 👌 great video guys keep up the great work.

If PSA owns SGC, then why in the hell would say a Scoot Henderson RC sell for $100 in a PSA Slab, BUT that same card would sell for $60-$70 in a SGC slab with the same grade? Its so weird
Why is nobody talking about TAG?? Strictly speaking from a logical perspective of non-biased grading that leaves no room for human error, WHY are we not making a giant shift to this company right now?
Fanatics will buy either PSA or Collectors as a whole. PSA is simply positioning its assets. No doubt in my mind that Fanatics and Collectors/PSA haven't already planned the acquisition.
Scott here, I pc Mookie, Arenado, Goldschmidt, Greinke, Jose Ramirez, Juan Soto (kind of), and Billy Butler. I have quite a few, but these are the players that I love watching so it is fun to have cards of them and feel like I have stock in the player.
@@SpitballinCards That's one thing I struggle with because there's so much great young talent right now with lots of potential but the reality is most won't sustain their early success. It helps the Braves have so many players I like but it makes it hard to branch out to other guys I like. My fun PC player right now is Zach Neto on the Angels who is the highest draft pick ever out of my alma mater, Campbell University. At the end of the day, just collect what matters to you and that you feel connected to. Loved that message in this video! Keep up the great work👍
Collect what you like. If it's all about $ then more power to you. I think a video should be done highlighting some RAW lower value cards that are underappreciated. The PSA worship has really gotten out of hand. I dont need all my cards slabbed especially when often you cant tell the difference between a 9 or a 10. A grader in a bad mood can give ANY card thats flawless an 8. Or there's the opposite where an obviously damaged or OC card gets a 10. I'm usually against AI, but for grading I can be swayed.

PSA doesn’t need to buy CGC. They just need to buy the company or have an exclusive contract with the company that makes CGC’s slabs. Edit* - I was saying it would be a smart business move if PSA did that. I hope they don’t. I want as much competition as possible.

It is weird. But PSA slabs still carry more weight in the hobby. They just do.

It’s too new. People trust PSA. Dealers/collectors know it will hold value. Try selling a Tag 10 for the price of a PSA 10

My fun PC player right now is Zach Neto on the Angels who is the highest draft pick ever out of my alma mater, Campbell University. Collect what you like. If it's all about $ then more power to you. I think a video should be done highlighting some RAW lower value cards that are underappreciated. The PSA worship has really gotten out of hand. I dont need all my cards slabbed especially when often you cant tell the difference between a 9 or a 10. A grader in a bad mood can give ANY card thats flawless an 8. Or there's the opposite where an obviously damaged or OC card gets a 10. I'm usually against AI, but for grading I can be swayed.

Chris here - I like your idea. We trie to highlight some cheaper cards in our recent card draft videos, but I think that type of card warrants more attention too.

Making excuses for Fanatics POOR quality control does not help correct the numerous problems they have had in so short a time! It's just another point against monopolies!
PSA doesn’t need to buy CGC. They just need to buy the company or have an exclusive contract with the company that makes CGC’s slabs.
Edit* - I was saying it would be a smart business move if PSA did that. I hope they don’t. I want as much competition as possible.

@@0_44_4 psa is the only grading company that takes any responsibility. All their slabs are guaranteed. Google the saga of the Juan Soto Superfractor. PSA will buy back any slab if an error is discovered.

Grading is a pathetic scam. NOBODY would tolerate arbitrary results from a REAL business.
