Good job man, another real world review! Funny i went and got some killer pads this week after watching how you bail on your knees! Haha . New Zealand is a bit limited in products but hopefully they will help me! I trying to push myself harder after watching you! No one wears pads here but at 42yrs i need em! Thanks mike.

Thanks so much for this detailed review. It was super helpful and my husband ordered the S1 knee pads and elbow pads and loves them. The velcro issue you mentioned in the video that happens with the Killer 187 knee pads would drive hom crazy and the S1 knee pads definitely are a cut above and don't have that issue. The S1 knee pads seemed a bit bulky when we received them - but in fact they are really comfortable and lightweight. Qulaity is excellent. The sizing chart is very detailed - so that you can get a good fit. Thanks again!

I've been a Skater in roller derby since 2011. 187s are a trusted brand but they are bulky compared to other brands.
Something I love about the 187 pro Derby pads is you can take out the foams and remove the caps so they are not damages during washing.

Close the velcro before you wash them. Not sure if that's what you're doing or not but it will save the velcro over time. My knees are so beat that even with pads, I can't slide out.

Thanks for the review! I am little confused though. In your video it seems you like the S-One better. In the comments you recommend the 187. So which one is it? Which one allows you to move more freely? I plan on using them in big bowls on a surf skate. I want solid protection while still being able to bend my knees as much as possible (like kinda deep squats for rail grabs)...

Nice review. I also hate the velcro tearing up the interior lining.
Per yesterday's discussion, I did some parts swapping... Krux and Indy are absolutely identical in geometry and parts. To the extent that all the parts are interchangeable (I swapped everything all around). Geometry and wheelbase are identical. Stock Krux bushings are the same as Independent "soft" bushings. I'm running Creature STFU 90a mediums in both and cannot tell a difference in the way they feel turning, but the Indy's are quite a bit heavier (perhaps stronger?) and I can say that to me, the Krux-equipped board feels lighter. Unless someone has a problem breaking Krux', likes the cachet of Indy's, or is a "dotard", there is no reason for spending more on the Indy's! The Krux are even lighter than the same size Indy's in hollow-forged... go figure. Haven't got to the Thunder vs Indy yet, was concentrating on my "street" setups.

  • @handywithshovels
    @handywithshovels 6 років тому

187s are great on impacts, IMO. They are robust and minimizes impact more than other pads I've tried. However, I've had chronic trouble with them slipping on simple kneeslides. Two different pairs. Lots of people have good success with them, though I can't stand pads sliding.
I've had good results with Smith Scab Elites, but they aren't as beefy so hard impacts are felt a bit more than the 187s. They don't slip nearly as much as the 187s for me, so I'll keep rocking them for now. However, I may try the S-One pads when it's time to get new pads.

      @handywithshovels 6 років тому

Prodigal Sun yes, I was using the 187 Pro pads, not the Fly models or the Derby pads.
It may have much to do with how I fall when I do fall. On the 187s for me, the top pad where the Velcro strap is Velcro attached down on the front, the actual pad was completely deteriorated from falls. Good pads- super beefy, but after two sets and the same issues, they aren’t for me personally. I haven’t had that same issue with the Smith Scabs. I do, however, feel it on a good impact slam in the Scabs.

fyi, since it didn't seem like you knew, "derby" on your Killer pads refers to Roller Derby, which is what those pads were specifically made for, not that they can't be used for other forms of skating. I have heard great things about both of these pads, and I'm looking at reviews because I'm currently trying to decide between them. @@ProdigalSuns their wider and flatter but they are the right dog for the right job , very similar to street skateing knee pads but more padding in the withed and the pro skate 187s are bulkier out from your knee.
It depends how you skate and how you need to distribute your weight .
Derby, hard but flat ground falls that you most likly was flung by some behemoth and it may be your face , the side of your knee and your leg that takes the brunt and derby players cant bail, we have the wheels attached to our feet.
So yeah they are bigger in suface area because of the way we fall but i used street skate knee pads for derby too as they have a bigger surface area but their no where as padded as derby knee pads.
The street skate ones still depend on you slidding from a lower center of gravity.
Now the park / ramp/ vert / bowl pro pads its all about falling to your knees in a controlled manner to slide down safely so thats a deliberate hard downward force on to your knee caps themselves.
It all about the thickness of the padding not the withed.
But im talking about the 187 pro series pads with the interchangeable knee caps , nothing with the rivets in it like yours.
But i was just chatting to a big boy thats of OG status and he wears a knee gasket under the 187 dreby knee pads and he has found his Cinderella fit ... just loves it.
Maybe a knee gasket under the s1's for some more padding

@@ProdigalSuns dont buy fresh meat packs/ tri packs .
They call them fresh meat packs in derby as its what all the rookies/ newbies buy and you can tell they are fresh meet by looking at their kit .
They have just got a set regarless if its going to fit or work for them based on a brand name but tri packs are always the base model entry level kit no matter what you paid as with fresh meat packs even the best brand in the world will not sell their best product as a tri kit and if anything has rivets in it , you know thats the base model as they are made to be disposable, and thats why in the pro gear you will find things like derby pro gear that you have to buy individually as you may like the fit in one brand of knee pads to what i like and for instance, i hate the normal bog standard skateboarding wrist guards with a passion.
I prefer a few diffent roller blading ones and only 2 brands of derby style ones that i use for transition skating but the ones like yours ..
Oh no , wont do them .
Owned a adrenal set of wrist guards the same style as yours but diffent brand obviously and used them for an hr or so and then gave them away that day.
I hated them. I cant hand plant with them and i actully dont feel suported in them at all but im use to the cup style wrist guards , they slide well and im always freaki g out that the big lump in the ones like yours will get snagged up on the coping doing stuff like death drops .
Sus out buying individual bits of kit that dose the job you want it to do .
Your gear is an investment , sort of an i insurance policy on your wellbeing and safty.
Wrist gurds that dont fit , dont work.
Knee pads with no padding are a fashion accessory
Elbow pads that dont stay in place or chaffe are a distraction and you have to be present in the moment when your skating or bad thing happen.
Its just like setting up a board.
You dont get a pre built, their for kids.
You work out what size deck you like in withed and length what shape you like , how mellow or concave you like it , do you like a big round nose and or a short tapered tail thats just made for tray flips or a big ass funky shaped heavy board thats just plain out heavy duty and doing crazy drops and gap outs over stairs or a longer type of board thats better for ramps ?
Then its the whole game of nuance with trucks , light , hollows, magnesium or forged , hight , wethed, do you want riser pads , rails , tail plates, soft bushings or hard bushings , do you like a lose or tight truck , what size wheel, what deromiter , big ball bearings for big impact or just a pack of redz... they roll .spacers or not , shelds or not ?
You kit can be just as technical as sorting out a new board thats your custom fit.
My kit is a mix of skateboarding gear, derby gear, just plain out quad skating gear and inline skate gear .
I dont inline skate at all but i do quad skate and ride a board.
All agressive skate stuff is there to opens up your choices rather that just going for the big 4 thats sponcered adds on Google.
Thats tripple 8, protec, killer 187 and s1 with safty gear.
And you have not even said anything about ankle protection or shin protection... there is heaps of stuff out there to help us remain skating for life.
How many 49 yo women do you know that hits the bowl on a 8.1" anti hero deck... lol
But one word of advice. Dont even bother with the pro tec knee pads, they dont slid well and your most likly to face plant from my experience.
My dentist loved skaters that use pro tec knee pads
