I fell off my bike on an icy road when I was a kid and smacked my head on the ground - no helmet. I lost my sight for a good couple of hours and I still remember the fear. I was lucky and it came back…but now I resemble a medieval knight when I go out on the longboard

i have a friend who was skating just down the street in SF. Woke up in the hospital, cracked his cranium and lost brain fluid. He doesn't know what happened. His girl had a kid shortly after he got out of hospital. He struggled to help in the early months. He couldn't sit in daylight without getting headaches. In his months of recovery, he had to sit in the dark. lesson is. wear a damn helmet.

great vid! thanks for uploading I am 49 and recently (last year) my wife and I got into roller skating - I used to be into skateboarding in the 80s into the late 90s. And now I am working up my skills on quad skates to go hit the park this information is applicable and very useful. Whether you use a board, a scooter, inlines or quads protect your body I was lucky to have avoided serious injuries when I was younger being stupid launching off a 12-stair set with no protective gear of any kind...

Thank you so much for the comparison! I panicked when I tried a random set after my first ones started to fall apart and I bumped my knee from just a basic knee slide. Really appreciate the in depth details and the wear! Very different from the usual "tried it a few hours" sponsored type reviews.

Love watching your stuff...subbed after seeing the vid with a skater that inspired me to get back to it after 30+ years off the board!! That is Andy Anderson!!..that video was great!!...I'm fighting Terminal cancer and got the ok from my Oncologist to skate again so he said i definitely need a helmet and pads..so I just need to save to get some pads ..helmet a couple decks and some indys..looking at the Large Powell Peralta Andy Anderson flight deck..being I'm 212 pounds...down from 398 pounds!! In 2 years!..and the Old school Santa Cruz Rob Roskopp Face deck which was my first pro deck.in OG Yellow...it's a purple color now I believe and a hair smaller in width...and sone Indy 169 or 159s depending on deck size...I rode the 9 in popsicle decks when they first came out and that was around 89 thru 91..I was skating Smallroom Skateboards back then..wish they still made decks...I knew everyone in that company which was just down the street from us in Los Osos ,California which Is when I stopped skating due to other health issues with a musculoskeletal disorder...but I'm determined been up here in Yakima, Wa area since 91...gonna take awhile to save..freaking gas money is killing us with my every other week drive to Seattle for my treatments that is 3hrs each way...sucks but remaining positive!!...figured if I'm going out one of these days it will be on my terms...and on a board!!! Keep the awesome vids comin!!!

I am 47 and getting going again after what must be close to a 35 year break. I took a good stack this afternoon and thankfully had full pads on. My elbow is throbbing a few hours later, imagine if I didn't have pads. Still getting up the courage to drop in but it's a long term goal. My daughter will do it and will shame me into it eventually. Cheers for the video.

46 here. Started back after a 32 year layoff. I started 2 months ago. I went to the park last week just to try to drop in again. It took a few hours working up to it but I did it. And it was like riding a bike, as soon as I got over the fear, my body remembered how to do it. Start on something small, and if you can find a bank without coping and mellow slope, start there. Then work up to coping and a proper transition. Maybe ride up and do some kickturns at the spot you want to drop in at. Good luck buddy. 😎🤘

Crashed on my boosted board yesterday. Always be aware of uneven pavement near bus stops in Chicago and be like this guy and buy yourself some good pads. The noggin is not to be forgotten! Wearing my snowboarding helmet now cuz it’s cold in Canada Eh haha. Sure most of you older fellas/gals have seen the Carhartt pants that allows you to slip a pad into the pant leg over the knee. My favourites for most skate sessions. But ripping a bowl/transition does need the beefy type you rock Brotha!! Well said all around, have a good weekend. :)

Thanks brother. I just seen a few videos that showed the skater 187’s are amazing, but to be fair they were not tested against every knee pad out there. I was all in on purchasing the 187’s after seeing that, but after watching your videos I’m not about the Velcro fraying, so after seeing this video with your experience I’m digging the Derby Pro’s as they have a larger size, so the ease of use to put in an extra knee pad to protect yourself as much as possible is beautiful along with being able to wash them so your outer pads last that much longer. Also I like the thought of not having to go with every protection pad having to be of the same brand as some items are better for whatever reason, so mixing is a great thing to customize your safety.

Thanks , you just cleared up some doubts i had about the S1 knee pads ive had .
Was trundling about youtube looking for a brand of pads my local skatbord shop has that i dont know and i came across a clip that was more an advertisement for what looked like kids pads that s1 have released ( the retros) .
Way lesser quality than the s1 pro ones you have and if they are not that shit hot well i may have to just stop exploring the options as im sick of being sold preety colouers ovef safty and have been wanting the killer 187 pros as the tripple 8 street skate knee pads ive been using for years for derby , well the elastic is starting to give and sit lose on me , its time to upgrade and im doing more ramp skating these days as derby stoppec because of covid and i have just not gone back as im getting to old and im to small for all that to start from scratch after 3 years of not training but if the killer derby pads can handle your weight coming down a bowl or ramp they may be over kill for me and im entirety ok with that as the derby ones are a bit cheaper than the vert ones.
    Thanks heaps .
Im dodging the s1's for sure now...
Oh as for washing your pads.
I find just tossing them in a bucket with Luke warm water if there really skanky and you can put a splash of disinfectant ( not a bleach) in with them to kill the bactira thats what is making them wreak and letting them soak for a bit then putting in the machine on a gentlewash and rince cycle with minamal soap with no spin dry setting .
They still dry preety quick but dont take such a hiding from the washing machine.
Been washing my pads like this regularly and for years and mine are only dying due to age as they are about 7 years old now and well they cant last forever .
But ive found if you get half way decent ones the padding dosent crumble because of the washing machine as the cheap ones do.
And if your sick to death of all the Velcro becoming one big mess of everything bcomeing a big ball of CBF sorting that mess out , when i remember i toss my knee pads in one old pillow slip with a hair tie holding it closed and i toss my wristies and elbow pads in a second pillow slip held closed with a hair tie then i toss the lot in the machine on luke warm, not hot.. in their neat little bundles.. and bonus the pillow slips are now cleaned at the same time too. You could even toss in the sweat saver band from your helmet in with all that lot just floating about out of a pillow slip and it would get stuck on everything else as their contained

I have been trying to measure myself for the 187 pro knee pads and it's quite confusing based on others saying that they run small. The founder said to measure 4 fingers below the knee which came out to 15inches circumference and 18 inches above the knee. Should I go with a size large? Their guidelines say: Large: 15 - 17in and X-Large: 17 - 20in.

I wouldn't worry about height at all.. do you have thick or stocky knees or legs? Im 215 pounds at 5'11" I have plenty I'd room in the XXL pad.. I could use the regular xl but it would be in the tighter side. I wear knees gaskets under and I find a roomy part more comfortable. Some guys say they slide off.. maybe if you have a small calf muscle that might be a factor. I don't so I can definitely wear larger pads. They are pretty adjustable and the straps are long you'll need to cut them top your liking.. how that helps you

Thanks for the vid! Is that an actual Bones helmet? For some reason the red cross makes me think of Bones (not sure why), I didn't know they made any. I tried a triple 8 certified wicking helmet but couldn't get it to fit right even after changing the cooling pads around several different times but they are very well designed.
I understand the heat and sweating issue, here we may have 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity and during the winter we may have negative 12 degrees and ice.
I think the company you were talking about with full fingers on the wrist guard were the Hillbilly brand.
I don't know what company you're talking about with full fingers but Pro Design wrist guards are the best design I have seen, I just don't have the money for it.

The right way to fall is falling on your knees and if you have too much speed your elbows. Especially in vert
I feel like if I wear hand guards I fall more onto my hands which makes it more dangerous. I'd rather take one break than developing a habit.

Yeah, you can learn to fall properly even with wrist guards but for me it worked out better without.
And it's not like I don't wear enough protective gear.
I always wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads and when I learn new tricks also crashpants and shirt. I love not getting inured but I don't think wrist guards help me with that.
