The Steven theme is so memorable because I played so much colosseum. And while I love Cynthia's battle theme, her encounter theme in the champion room is absolute god tier. And I love Iris' theme for special reasons, it was a really good day when I got to her and heard that theme and that made it even better. Also with bdsp happening im super hyped for all the gen 4 music getting some new love!!
It feels so sad how Diantha was practically ignored for the entirety of the game until you see her at the end and you’re like “WAIT-I KNOW YOU! YOU’RE the Champion?!??”

Unlike most champions, leon is a celebrity, a superstar. Not like a final superboss. It doesn’t need to be threatening or terrifying. Plus, you have met him before and may as well be your own brother so you know what kind of person he is. He’s fun, charming and not scary at all. This is the only one i have an issue with. The others, it’s good enough where they are

I've always felt like Blue's theme is a real final boss theme: Intense, evil, full of energy and designed to show the player that that's it - that's the final battle.
FR/LG Blue is one of the absolute best just because it had no reason to ever go that hard, but it’s hard to deny Cynthia is the queen

Vs REd and Lance will always be my favorite Champ theme. There is a metal version that slaps hardcore.
Thanks for reminding me of the fact that Alder is the one Champion in Pokemon History, that I have never fought (as a champion). Sure, I beat him in B2W2, but I only ever battled N in BW and never went back to the Pokemon League.
Something to note with Blue's/Green's theme, there is an unused version of it in B1W1. It was only ever played during the finals at the Pokemon World Championship during that generation. Easily my favorite version of the song.
yes that version is phenomenal. sad that it’s a very exclusive version but I guess that adds to the quality

I really like that Iris' is on theme with the Unovan Medieval Fantasy Aesthetic, Iris is a Princess protected by monsters and dragons reached after beating the dark lord, Ghetsis and the four heavenly kings.
The Sun and Moon champion theme is essential nust being your theme as the champion, defending your title against challengers.
I hate Alder disrespect. A more intense theme wouldn't fit his character.
That's what I've been saying! Alder isn't a normal champion, he's just a guy who loves going around the region and teaching about Pokemon, who also happens to be VERY good at battles. Alder isn't intense, he's kind and just wants you to enjoy the battle. Your battle isn't a competition, it's an activity with a friend.
Fair point but why is his theme the exact same as the subway bosses, i was actually disappointed in the fact that alders theme was the exact same as ingo and emmet, i was expecting a chill relaxed theme but not a repeat theme
What I like about Red and Blue's Champion theme is how it's this mix of surreal and nightmarish. Like your character is horrified at the fact that his rival beat him to the top of the league. It perfectly captures how ten year old me felt the first time I beat Red. 😂
I always thought of it similarly, as if the theme itself were accentuating a giant shadow in the shape of Red and Blue, respectively.
It feels harsh but apt at the same time, and it sets a perfect tone for your final battle.
I think The champion theme for Sun and Moon is one of the best. It’s not Cynthia, but it’s right up there in my book.
The champion theme is great when you don't go through 3 cycles of the elite 4 and fight Hau all 3 times.

Don't worry your not the only one who has a biased towards gen 4 and tries then to try list it objectively but yea Cynthia's theme and if you count N as a champion than he would be in S tier too.
Cynthia's prelude to her theme is also crucial honestly.

Hey just to let you know you missed out hau's champion theme. Also yeah I totally agree with this chart, but Lance is personally my favourite theme especially the 8-bit version. Is it weird that I prefer the 8-bit over hg/ss?

The 8 bit is faster. The intro is more harsh and intense, however the HGSS theme is slower and is more pounding. I like the 8 bit theme because it is straight to the point and doesn't add too many (sometimes unnecessary) effects
Agreed. The 8-bit is simple yet intense. When heard the HG/SS version i was thrown off but all the extra instruments.
I think lance's B2W2 remix comes the closes to capturing the esscence of the original.
Nah I agree. Gen 2 version and Gen 3 Champion themes sound more aggressive in the original sound and they sound better in those generations
Honestly now because of the Volo fight Cynthia's theme will always feel a little lacking to me. It's just so grand and unnerving. Like you can really feel the stakes are high with that incarnation of that theme.
Thing is though their battle themes aren't the same, Volo's Prelude is a remix of Cynthia's Battle Theme and Volo's Battle Theme is a remix of Cynthia's Prelude, imo they're distinct enough to not hinder one another.
aaaaa, i loved the video! and now that the re-makes of diamond and pearl came, the chynthia's theme is EPIC!
To me, Blue theme is the best. It's a "danger theme". You know you're stuck and the only way to get out is to win. It feels like that music came to you. Melodic wise, it's variable and jumpy.
Cynthia gave me the "Heroic danger encounter". Very jumpy constant drum kicks. It lacks melody compared to blue. You feel like you're getting pounded but you asked for it, which is less threatning lol.
Honestly, Blue's theme evokes more terror than Cynthia's for me, simply because when you fight Blue with this theme for the first time, you had NO. IDEA. This fight was coming.
You just beat the Elite Four. You've been told repeatedly about the 'Elite Four'.
Four. FOUR. FOUR battles, and it's over. You win. So when Blue comes out of NOWHERE and slaps you with the FIFTH battle?
Are you gonna sit there and try to tell me you were prepared for that?
Cynthia's theme is badass, and elegant, and the epitome of 'You have no idea what you've just stepped into, and I am going to take great pleasure in clarifying to you exactly what that is.'
Blue's theme by comparison is frenetic, chaotic, and borderline desperate, on BOTH sides.
Your team is likely running on fumes. You've just run the toughest gauntlet of battles this game can throw at you, ending off with a battle against Dragon types that you have probably not seen up to this point before, and are completely alien to you. You've probably got 4-5 Pokemon still standing, no more revives, and minimal healing items.
Then, from Blue's side, he has. Never. Beaten. YOU.
In-story, Blue has never defeated you in battle, except maybe ONCE back at the lab. All of this, all that he's accomplished, has been to prove himself your better, and yet he still constantly came up short against you when it mattered. And it matters NOW more than ever.
The desperation in his theme is the both of you planting your feet and REFUSING to lose.
I get chills every time that opening theme plays.
Of course it was obvious that Blue was gonna be the Champion, he was ahead of you the whole time through our the game, so obviously he would beat the E4 before you. He's basically a Speed Runner & can never be beaten timewise since he's always many steps ahead of you.

Steven’s theme from ΩRαS hurts my thighs from slapping to the beat. It is magnificent. Plus I don’t understand the appeal of Gen 1-2 soundtracks. Most remakes improve the music dramatically, especially in FRLG’s case, which, you know, actually has instrumentation.
I like Leon's theme because its a remix of the "Team registration theme." When you beat a champion but theres a reason its like this...because Leon is the unbeatable champion in his eyes he's already won so the remix of the team registration theme really fits him because he knows he's unbeatable and he's already won untill we came along. I know i'm a year late but like still just needed to say something

SM theme is basically your defense of champion title theme, that's why it sounds not as hard as someone may want, btw the theme has some part of the intro's music, I personally do not like Leon's champion theme because it feels like you have already won and you are in the credits scene which is weird
Eh, I think the hall of fame motif works well for Leon. He's supposedly never lost a match, which in my opinion makes the hall of fame theme more being 'his' victory being assured, rather than your own.
Plus the crowd integration in it is so fucking good, the "na na na na's" genuinely make it one of my favourites lol.
Though hop's league theme is absolutely god tier.

Not really applicable to this list, but the Black 2/White 2 World Tournament versions of the Gym Leader and Champion themes are real good if you haven't listened to them much.
Hau, Kukui and Leon are all s-tier to me and I will die on this hill LOL. In all seriousness, those 3 are the only ones I have any kind of emotional attachment to. In that sense gen 7-8 for me is your gen 4, so I have bias for that.
Gen 2 still up there as well though.

As a milennial, those first few bars of the Gen 2 champion theme strike fear into my heart every time.
Wait... Where is N?? That bgm was a blessing to the hears (and yes, he's technically a champion cuz he destroyed Alder)
Sure you saw him come out of the Museum but I don't think he ever beat the Gyms or E4. Basically he sneaked into Alder's room via Shadow Traid & then Ghetsis sent Alder to the League to fight N. So essentially, N never did any of the requirements to become a Champion.
I feel if you’re gonna rank Blue’s theme you have to do his FRLG theme
Red's theme is an all time favorite
Cynthia and just a sliver behind is Red theme. Red is my fear as i was a child, i tried him hours without any chance! So his soundtrack stays in my memories, and the background story, and the fact that he never talks is just memorable.

For me Blue's theme will always be the best. I'm a victim of nostalgia, he was the first champion I ever fought back in 1999 and that music kept playing for one entire hour while I spammed revives.

22:13 I'm super late with this, but this is very much due to both Gen 1 and 2 using functionally the same "sound card" or chiptune. If you had the knowhow, you could program Lance's/Red's theme into Red/Blue/Yellow since games use the same instruments.
How about ranking the Pokemon Masters remixes? I havent seen anyone do it before, and I think since youre a musician, I kinda wanna know your opinion on how well they did updating past battle themes lol

Blue's Theme in the remakes (FR/LG)makes a feeling of warn or surprise cuz you didnt expect to see him thats not present in the original
Lance/Red's Theme works for Red cuz of Victory Road theme and the opening music combined it closes a circle of finding who you played in first gen as the secret boss
Steven's/Wallace Theme its not that good its almost the normal battle theme much faster and epic
Cynthia theme it's if the word D I E Was trransformed into a song and its hard fight with Garchomp and the boys just makes this hardest champion fight,hands down
Alder as champion its not too much he's almost not a champion he was defeated by N in the climax and Him and Ghetsis are final bosses in the best game of the saga in my opinion
Iris theme conveys joy of pokemon combats it transmits too much joy it has a backstory that i dont understand,only that iris was the only gym leader that didnt had a job so she exploted her potential and became a hard battler
Diantha's battle is easy for a champion but her theme expresses who is her more of an actress and a beautiful person in Kalos(inspired in France)
But also gives active battle motifs that express a champion battle that dont fit too much 'cause of her fight being easy as f***
Champion theme in Alola is the Champion Theme of the player expressing the first notes of the pokemon theme that represented the 20th aniversary of the saga ,and parts of the intro of this game with a glorious tone telling like "It is here,your moment of showing the world what YOU are made of,show 'em why youre the champion"
Hau's theme is good but its his theme but with the intro of the champion theme in the past one,expressing Hau's personality but showing he's matured and he'll try to stop you this time
Leon's theme uses the Hall of Fame theme as his intro and with the chants evoke all the sport/football match spirit of the fight and the game
And finnaly Geeta's theme is a mix of many themes,some spanish guitars in theme ,but she's easier than Diantha because she's not the final boss of the game the final boss is

“This is not fair,” I thought when I imagined it was me that ranked this video. Lance/Red and Blue’s theme in their original games sounds very intense as they should be respectfully. And then there’s their remakes/remixes in Gen 3 and Gen 4. Why is Blue’s final battle theme sounds more extremely intense?? Why is Lance/Red’s Champion theme sounds even more epic?? These two themes just get their upgrade but they are still even competitive and still evenly good??? How would I rank them and put one of them into S-tier if Cynthia’s theme doesn’t exist??
Cynthia theme shouts a real champion theme that I can't find on the others even the newer ones.

Agreed. They introduced the hall of fame theme into it beautifully. Leon isn’t meant to be intimidating challenge who wants to beat you. He’s like a big brother that wants to push you to keep getting stronger and better

Blue and Lance/Red are very antagonistic. They're an imposing enemy, but they're a challenge you're _putting up a fight against._
Whereas Cynthea is at every point actively threatening you.

I don’t know if this has been noted yet, but Wallace’s Theme is slightly different from Steven’s since he is from Emerald, not Ruby/Sapphire.
Coming from someone who is not biased because gen 3 was my favorite and I spent hundreds of hours in, blue is the best theme out there. The OG first gen version. It is scary. It is unpredictable. It is fast. And it’s intro hasn’t been beat. It was also the first time you got into the champion room (probably as a kid) thinking you won and then BOOM your worst nightmare, a fifth consecutive boss fight with the smell-master himself. Cynthia is a bit meh to me. Good theme. Solid A. But it doesn’t pump me the same as Blues or red’s theme (sun and moon version also)

Yeah, the Champion's theme of Sword and Shield is a bit weak. Marnie, Bede and Gym Leader themes is where it's at in those games.

I agree with this tier list, but I honestly think the sun and moon champion theme should be in A tier (possibly S) because it absolutely nailed the epic feeling! I *REALLY* didn’t like Alder’s theme though, and it was pretty underwhelming, great tier list.
3 years later and I still completely disagree with you about Leon’s. It’s meant to be the hall of fame theme because he’s undefeated. He thinks he’s already won. I think it’s perfect for him, and one of the best champion themes. It’s a bop and it’s perfect for the character and the moment. S tier.

I come 2 years later after this was posted but my S themes will always be Blue and Cynthia. A definitely Red and Lance, and then I wholeheartedly agree with the list. Leon is overrated and so are his Charizard and his champion theme.
