    • I track and mix in the same room if I track drums with outboard EQ on the toms what would be the best method to dial in the EQ before pressing record? (3:02)
    • Sometimes I find myself using too many plugins on a track. Do you have any advice on what to think about before one starts adding plugins? (7:06)
    • What would be the steps to get the drums all aligned? Should I Align the kicks with the kicks, Snares with the snares or should I just pick up one sample and align everything to that? (12:15)
    • How much time should I put into recording mixing and engineering a week to get to a higher tier of production skill? (17:07)

Building myself an ADAT based 24 track studio. Using the inserts on my 32 channel Mackie board, I print to tape the post preamp, preEQ signal. Is it better to print to tape a pre or post EQ signal? Routing through EQ would limit me to 8 channels (4 sub bus, 4 post eq aux sends) of recording at once, and for early tracking I'd like to use more than 8 just for drums, and tracking some rough guitars and a click as well. I think i prefer having the extra tracks and can EQ later, just unsure whether im losing anything by printing a preEQ signal instead of a postEQ signal.
      Thanks!

I'd love to hear Warren's thoughts and a breakdown on how analog mixing from multi-track tape to 2-track tape is or was done on a console.... what was the process, how was it done, and what was the experience like... do you need multiple hands to move faders at just the right time... what if something didn't go as planned, do you just start over? I bet this would be really interesting. A live demo would be even more awesome. Thanks!

Another good thought mode to be in before using plug-ins......make sure you are using a plug-in FOR A SPECIFIC REASON and not just because you saw an engineer use the plug-in on youtube.

Down the plugin rabbit hole... Coming up in the digital era we never really had the opportunity to use outboard gear. Now that we've got some it's such a refreshing change. Still generally prefer doing EQ in post but tracking audio that sounds better going in than the old stuff did after much much post production is so nice.

There is a Reaper add-on called SWS / S&M extension. The extension allows you to take snapshots. I highly recommend the use of snapshots when you are loading up your plugins. This prevents having to delete all the plugins and starting over. Makes it easy to A/B your plugin decisions.

Question for next week At what point does an engineer become the Producer. In other words. A band hires me and my studio to record a record. During the process, I as the engineer start to offer production advice to help make the recording better. As we go along I add more production to the project (at the bands request they ask things like " what do you think the song needs"...) My goal is to make the best recording possible, but as this goes on what point to I need to have the conversation about getting a producer credit?

Absolutely true we use way too many plugins. We use them to the point of going backward and making things more complicated and not sounding better. I think in many cases, we trick ourselves into thinking it sounds better when it really doesn't.

    • @doncolga08
      @doncolga08 5 років тому

I've never had a problem using too many plugins, but what made it even more apparent to me was using Harrison MixBus and using just the console EQ and dynamics. Plus your busses are "limited" so you have to be more thoughtful about how those are used. I'd have may six plugins total on a high track count project and I'd be really happy with the results, plus not have to manage so many plug-in windows. And I was super happy with the results. Now, you could certainly count the onboard EQ's and dynamics as plugins for sure. I take this approach to Studio One and see how far I can get a mix with a channel strip and my template busses, which are about 8 I believe. It works really well and greatly simplifies things. But sometimes I think we *want* things to be complex for its own sake.

Do you know of a largER diaphragm (I know it isn't technically considered a large diaphragm if it's less than 25 mm in diameter or something like that) or a "medium-diaphragm" condenser for a price similar to the Lewitts you demoed, that is shaped like a small diaphragm and can be aimed in the same way? I want to do an XY pair on a stereo bar, the same way I do with small diaphragms, but for a setup that only has a kick close mic, which would leave the overheads handling quite a bit of the sound. As a wee lad back in Ye Olde 90's, I was tracking punk bands to a Tascam 388. All 4 of the drum mics were going through an Alesis 1622 mixer onto tracks 1 and 8 on the 388, and someone had a pair of AKG C1000s, which were very convenient, since they ran off 9 volt batteries. I don't really remember how they sounded though. What's no more than a couple hundred each, has a somewhat larger-than-small diaphragm and fits in a clip for XY on a stereo-bar? Should I just get a pair of C1000s?

The sonic character I'm looking for, always takes me several plugins to achieve. When you record, and mix completely in the box, it's very digital and very clean, a little too clean for me. Use as many plugins as it takes to achieve the desired results IMO. If your able to reach your mixing goals with 1 plugin, then do so. If it takes 9 or 10, then do so. The more important question is not how many plugins your using, insteadask yourself "Are the listeners going to like the song, and will it compete against, or be close to the music at the top of the streams in your given Genre"?
    Thanks as always Warren

Sounds a lot better. But still I think it doesn't sound the way I want. Have you work with that electro piano ? The piano is a key instrument on that rock mix.

I have a question about room treatment. I'm a lucky guy in the sense that no one in the family likes the basement.
Therefore I get over 50% of it for me! My room is roughly 12' by 30'. I've set it up so my speakers fire down the long way.
My question is: How far back do I need to be concerned about reflections? At that distance, 30', should I be concerned
about absorption, reflections, diffusion? Would I be better of shortening the room?
    Thanx.

i record with reaper, and use BARE layouts, opened script editor, and combined Shelving Filter with dynamic compressor with spectrum analysis, so that with any track recorded, uses minimum processing, and sculptable to the max with minimum effort. i love shelving filter for grabbing the lows and highs, and stuffing them where i want, compression for fattening or squishing, and a box that shows how the signal comes out :) badass and cpu use is VERY free now.

What happened to just dialing in the EQ from the console? Especially on Drums where you would have 8 to 14 mics coming in with maybe some being split into multiple channels for further processing, it's just so much swifter in terms of work flow. I never, ever record Drums flat. I want the clients to hear them and say "Wow." Geoff Emerick once said that he takes them half-way which sounds like a safe practice. He was also not a fan of outboard mic pre-amps. He just used what was in the recording desk. By the way, if all you have is software you can still print your mics EQed by bringing them in on Aux Tracks, slap an EQ on the Insert and route them to an Audio Track via Busses.

I nearly missed this FAQ Friday episode, because I'm on holiday in Bulgaria, but my addiction to this channel & community refused to let me. If I may add something to the whole learning audio eng/mixing discussion. I've been recording with Cubase for years, but have made more progress in the last 6 months through this portal than at any other time. The truth Is I've picked up a lot of tips and techniques, bought new plugins, but that in itself didn't help, what has helped my the most is comprehension of the entire process AND making all the mistakes people on here are making. If it doesn't sound right, scrap it, start again. Break the habit of using a 'technique' - simply because you've learnt one, doesn't mean you should use it every time. If you think your music sounds thin, weak or underwhelming compared to professional releases, reference tracks, start examining in detail; gain-staging, level-matching, good metering, look at your peaks. transients, look into saturation, transient design and crest factor, and reference those professional recordings, especially the meter levels (once you've adjusted them as comparatively wit your own song). look into mastering, Ian Shepherd Production advice) featured on this channel has some excellent information for home mastering which will really open your eyes and ears and imho feeds back wonderfully in to your mixing. If you're going to use that new plugin; make sure you know what it is doing function-wise an parameter-wise, experiemnt maybe, but don't randomly twiddle, it will come back to haunt. If you've spent hours (or maybe days) mixing a song and it sounds like crap, start again, listen differently, that time spent wasn't all wasted, because you will have a better idea of what is not right, and when you go back and start again, your work flow will be much quicker anyway. Sometimes frustrating, but it's a wonderful sonic journey and your ears will thank you for the time you've invested

Hi Warren another great Saturday catchup OZ time! Back in the early 90's I worked in a hifi shop and witnessed the rise and rise of Surround sound. I fell in love with the THX standard and had many a debate that there were still better component's that were non THX. Whist I didn't disagree. knowing that a THX approved product had a minimum standard either for sound or audio plus a THX certified theatre also met minimum requirements meaning your SciFi movie should sound and look as the movie maker envisioned. So my question my friend is it time for a similar set of minimum standards, WHX, the Warren Huart Xperience! Perhaps a round table of your friends, Mr Alge for example, because quite frankly it is a minefield full of products that sometimes become expensive fails due to hype or misleading tech info. I would most certainly buy or try something you certified because you are passionately good bloke, Cheers Peter Manaena, Hobart. Tasmania

    Hi Warren,
People call me “Mick the Vid” I am a songwriter, musician and singer, in G.B. I am a little upset with the usage of songs, that I have been involved in the co-writing and production of or that I know are still in copyright, in a most vulgar and insulting way by a “You-Tuber” Named “ Mr Cheswich”. Mr Cheswich claims on line his copyright of the songs, i.e. song "Copyright Cheswich Records" these parodies he produces using either karaoke backing tracks or the real tracks with the original vocals electronically removed and replaced with words describing the most adult of sexual acts. Many of these songs are children’s favourites, like “Rudolf the red nosed reindeer” and other famous and well loved songs. Would you please help me let him know he is not free from control to produce his gross content? Using nick names and some real names he has insulted many famous personalities and other content producers using foul language, sung and I use the term loosely, using constant reference to every sexual act known to man woman and dogs, I would like to think that with your input You-Tube will be able to control what seems to be really vulgar copyright infringements on their channel. .
    All the best
    Mick

I have an 8x8x8 booth that I handbuilt in my large backyard woodshed studio specifically because in LA it can get pretty loud outside. I’ve done a tone of research before getting into it and I’ve managed a pretty nice sounding booth for vocals, amps, etc.. However, it could sound better. Any advice on how you would get a booth this size to sound the best it can? Any specific absorption-diffusion tricks? Maybe share details of your tracking rooms/vocal booths?
    Thanks always

Faq question: if a band wants a CD and an LP would you ever do two different mixes or would you let the mastering person deal with making 2 masters from the same mix? I've never had someone make 2 mixes in my bands, but as I'm recording stuff for myself for LP there are things to comply to the vinyl format that seem easier to solve in the mixing process, but it's also almost twice as much mixing work, and updating two files if I make any changes. Any advice on this?? Thanks for all your great videos!

    Question for the FAQ:
When i mix my songs and hear them via the monitors (Adam A7X) they are
fine. When i hear them e.g. via the iPhone earplugs they are crap. I
tried to mix via the iPhone earplugs, which was strange as there were
frequencies lost as well. Is this a room-issue, or maybe an ear-issue?

I find that a common problem with to many plugins is that you think ”i NEED to EQ, i NEED to compress, i NEED this and that” and starting to add plugins i don’t even need. Not every track needs to be eq or whatever. Just do the tweeks that are nessesery.

Hello Warren, How do you approach recording, editing and mixing songs that are longer three and half minutes? I recently worked with a group that had many songs that were longer than 5 minutes even a few longer than 10 minutes.

frankly, since I started putting a console emulation across all my tracks ie: brainworxx ssl E for instance, I use that to do my heavy lifting so to speak and I find I use way fewer plugs...mostly buss comp or an 1176 on the bass or overheads...I actually try to mix with the limitations of a real studio..otherwise, most studios don't have that many outboard pieces so they have to decide where to put these units..I do the same..I'm not going to put any plug except for the console across every track because it just isn't realistic to real world situations

Great Video! I had 2 laugh - used the whole weekend to fix a piano sound with endless plugins - so tell me more about it. (should have seen this earlier) It's crazy - I don't get the sound I want to - it sounds always different. My headphones and hte speakers are quite different sounding - I wonder what I can do to make the sound on both sound good. The speakers aren't that great but they sound fine with "professional" music so there have to be a way. ^_^*

Where is the best place to place a room mic with recording a rock band? Along with amps and P.A. In the Room?

Another angle on the plugins: If, like Warren says, you're using one plugin to fix an issue and introducing another issue, and so on and so on, you might just be going overboard with the first plugin. Try dialing it back a bit.

Any suggestions on ways to slow down an artist who in their head is moving from idea to idea faster than you can set up gear, without killing their burst of creative ideas? Example: Fading in some feedback to build up a bridge might sound cool, but I no sooner grab a mic for the guitar amp and then we're discussing a piano high part in the background. I love the creativity, and don't want to stifle it, but want to avoid the rabbit hole and every song becoming the middle of "a day in the life".

I hope you are marvelously well also? I always wonder how the creators of recording techniques feel about the one knob solutions that modern "producers" over use today? Are they ok doing a plug in with their name on it and enjoy royalties for life or do they find this "immediate solution" producing annoying? Cheers!

I never Time Align my Drum Tracks unless there is a hit that is so ridiculously off with the rest of the Band that it would ruin an otherwise perfect take. But that's an interesting thing you are doing with the Time Adjuster and multiple mics. Did anyone bother with that when they were recording to tape? These days it doesn't make any difference, as the Mixer is only going to replace your sounds with samples in the end!

Hello guys, I have a problem, probably with headphones. When I`m sending audio only to the one side, it is also on the other side, but much more quite. Is this a thing? Can some headphones have bleed from one side to another? Or is that something else?

Hey Warren, What is your "spec" distance between the snare and overhead mics? In other words; how many inches from the snare to the over heads have you found to work most of the time? Thanks.

When it comes to Plug-Ins, like everything else, you do what is necessary. If I see a nice little stack forming I'll go back and start taking them in and out of Bypass to determine whether or not I really need this one or that one, but I've never had to tear down and start from scratch because I have a pretty good idea of what I am going for. Sometimes the result is more pleasing with fewer, but some of that might be the satisfaction you get knowing that you accomplished this without a lot of processing.
