I did a test a while ago. Had a session that wasn’t mixed at all. All I did was put a HPF at 35hz on every channel. Played the song and went back and fourth bypassing every channel’s plugin/engaging it and man, it made a pretty significant difference. You’re absolutely right, Warren... the frequencies we can’t hear often are messing up our mixes. I always HP or LP everything... I’ll slide the freq knob until I’ll hear a change, then I’ll back it off slightly. Really helps clear up the mix and clears headroom as well.

  • @asexydeath

I was having a huge problem because of watching and learning from UA-cam videos about mixing. I was mixing with my eyes: doubting my EQ moves and threshold settings because of what they look like on a screen rather than actually listening. I solved this by buying an external mixer/DAW control. I think it's been one of the most positive things I've ever done. I now close my eyes and mix faders into the buss compressor and make more confident EQ moves based on quickly moving the fader on tracks to see how they're sitting.
MIX WITH YOU EARS NOT YOUR EYES!
    Oh and mono.

    • @rednug1
      @rednug1 5 років тому

Well said TEX. It's a hard transition to make for some as we're so visual in nature. I think buying an external controller would definitely benefit many of us! I'm still learning a lot and found that ear is king, and many references help this process.

Definitely 100% truth with the topic of multiband compression. I mix quite a lot of live recordings and generally only use multiband as a corrective tool for proximity effect on vocals and such. Singers live can tend to be pretty varied with their distance from the mic, and it can work great to control the low mid variation that comes in to that. I know a surprising amount of engineers the will use multiband comps on their drums bus, guitar bus, mix bus etc, and most of the time it causes nothing but issues. Great stuff as always!

Thanks for sharing these very important tips. Not high passing hit home for me. I worked for months trying to get a recording of my acoustic guitar that sounded as good as it did in the room. I finally purchased a small condenser to try which didn't seem to help until I engaged the high pass filter on the microphone. Problem solved and the difference was unbelievable.

Thank you Warren - another great compendium of tips. As you said at the start, most of them covered in many places but never so succinctly collated and clearly explained as here. For me - the new one was "Don't use/rely on multi-band compression on mix buss". Though I'm no pro I am starting to get a bit more proficient and have come to love the Waves Linear Phase Multi-band Compressor gently applied to the mix buss to just bring the track alive once mixed... it does just do something to the whole mix that I don't really know how to explain. But back to your point, I have slipped into just having it there... I now realise this and completely agree that is should be for mastering for that final balance and sheen and can see that it gets in the way of mixing well. Thanks again! Richard

Dear Warren. I really appreciate this channel. I’ve gained a lot of insight and knowledge by watching your videos.Thank you for all the great stuff you're putting out!
I write, produce and mix my own music and sometimes I find it hard to maintain the overview in my songs. When I lose it, the magic the song(s) kinda blurs or disappears. I was wondering if you had any tips I could try out, that could make it easier to separate the writing/producing/mixing stages and make it all a little less overwhelming? I usually take breaks when i switch between these three stages, but it doesn't always help that much.
I will be looking forward to the next videos :)

Apologies if this has already been mentioned or covered in one of your videos.
With regards to solving problems in the mix, specifically frequency build-up (usually low mids), the FabFilter ProQ3 has (among some other cool features) an excellent tool for comparing the eq of any of the tracks on which you are using the ProQ3. It even shows you where any build-up is. So once you've decided which instrument/s you want to be covering that frequency, you can be pretty specific about what you need to cut and where. It's SO useful. I'm not sponsored by them or anything! Just a fan. :)
    Thanks Warren. :)

Another thing I would add to this great video of yours is acoustic treatment ! Since I watched your video of the Sonarworks Reference 4, my mixes have improved dramatically (with both monitors and headphones) because now I can hear all the things I didn't hear before ! It is also about the place in which you are mixing. Before using SOnarworks, I used to have like 30 plugins (including EQ, compressor, FX, etc) in all tracks to have "something good". After doing acoustic treatment I only used like 7 and just a couple for FXs and it sounds a lot better. Invest in acoustic treatment or headphones is my recommendation !!

A few months prior I heard you saying your two cents about "mixing" in the master bus.
    Essentially mastering before mixing.
Essentially "fixing" your mixing problems on your master bus.
    Let me tell you, folks.
Ever since I stopped doing that my mixes started sounding SO MUCH better.
I thought my first "serious" project, while being demanding, it ended up sounding decently enough.

At the rough stage in the beginning I've learned to first get a decent vocal sound. It's the most important thing in a mix, so if it's ball park right, then you know where everything else fits with it. Trying to fit a vocal in later in a mix can lead to problems.

Dear Warren . I am new to your channel and computer recording. But analog or tape I know. I hear a lot of questions on how to fade the vocals when your recording alone. I use a Digitech RP20 guitar effects processor. I sing through the tuner channel which allows me to preamp my vocal. It lets me see my vocal tuning in reel time and the volume pedal lets me fade with my foot. These pedals are terrible which makes them cheap. But this part works Exellent !!

Thanks for another great video, Warren! I'm really glad that I'm just starting out but I'd already applied most of these, however, it's always good to have a refresher. #5 is something that really hits home, as I remember doing a lot of weird stuff to single instruments, thinking it's the hottest sh*t since Martin Birch or something, and then I listen to it with the entire mix and it either sticks our like a sore thumb or is completely silent and buried in the rest. #5 can't really be stressed enough and I'm glad you're talking about it often, nobody listens to solo tracks, but us geeks, heh.

Glad I’ve been doing most of this for a long time (my mixes still suck). De essers on guitars almost always. I do like multibanding a bass though. A good expressive acoustic bass has a ton of energy in the lower register but those higher fills and passages don’t, so it can definitely even things out.

Thanks a million, I think I just understood why my mixes sucks more bow than they used to , say, 10 years ago...mixing mostly in the box now, I make the third mistake you ‘re talking about...
I mix with izotope Ozon on and already set with compression eq etc, just based on the project before I mix or during the mix...
Now I realize it goes against logic and against my mix itself...
I will mix without it from now on and try it only on mixes already done, once the proper treatments per traks , per bus, the sends and aux are done and sound the way I want...
    Great tip

18:27 Wow, this is a great tip. Thanks so much for all of your videos. I find that a lot of times just putting effects on things "just because" can ruin a sound or whole mix, and that just because you're "supposed" to put compression on something doesn't mean you should do it. It's all about context! I'm still learning this myself, for sure.

Great tips Warren. I might add, that not listening on multiple speakers, and walking around the mix room is a mistake. You need to hear your mix on a few different systems, your car, headphones, etc. and really check your bass response.

Panning tracks L, R, C along with adjustments for a nicer sound stage is something that's important to me for the listener to experience.

It's always great to listen to a total master say things that i'm personally guilty of... Ok, I'll stop mixing through a compressor (I only started because of the million UA-camrs that recommended it any way) Ok I'll stop eq'ing the master bus. (It always feels lazy when I do it anyway)... And fine... I'll turn down. It's like you're in my studio watching my frustration! Thanks for all the great content!

I use the 4 full band de-essers in Schepps Omni Channel on many guitar tracks, and other instruments as well.
With four of them, and them being full band, they help greatly reduce the scraping noise of fingers moving along strings, for example, as well as so much more. I’ll sometimes use an F6 for the same, but the Omni Channel is quick, efficient and having four full band de-essers along with everything else that’s HiDef ‘under the hood, is a lot of power. It’s also frugal with ur resources.
On your point about low-passing guitars, I do regularly, generally a bit higher tho; 8 to 15K. It’s subjective, to a point, but the theory is sound (pun intended) if I have an Omni Channel on there already, I’ll low pass with that as well. Certainly the most flexible plugin I’ve run into, but most people don’t go under the hood (expand each section all the way) on their reviews as it’s not very obvious.

Thanks Warren. A great lesson, and I’m keen to start using hi and low pass filters on all my mixes. Hope this isn’t a dumb question, but where is the best place to put HP and LP filters in the chain? Before gain/trim for example. Also, is it best to use dedicated filter plugins or is it just as good to hi and low pass using channel EQ? Big thanks.

Marvellous question! I do typically, not always, but mostly cut as early as possible! If I'm using it at the end of a bunch of plug ins then it's for extra shaping!!
