Thanks so much for this video!! As a young person who is serious about my practice but also single and dating… it often feels like I’m making it up as I go along. I really appreciate your insight.
Such a timely video 😂 Here in Ontario, Canada we are about to have a holiday weekend. My husband and I have made this weekend our annual long weekend without the kids, to be loud and adventurous. So he is at this very moment in an adult store, stocking up on supplies hahaha. I need to steal that background music you have. Bow chicka wow wow.
Loved that video! It's always so enjoyable to watch your stuff. The deep humaneness in all of it is a steady reminder that they way is not finalized with the 8th oxherding picture. Lovely 🙏🏼♥️
Oh ! The samsaric ups and downs of cravings to which there is no satisfactory end. I do think Buddhism is a philosophy of restraint and mindfulness, irrespective of the tradition. Very insightful, humorous and philosophically sophisticated. I personally could never read Deleuze, he’s harder for me than Dogen lol. Out of the westerners I’ll die with the desire-negating grouchy Schopenhauer by my side.
The kind of line used to entice a gullible student into the 'inner sanctum' of the master where all will be revealed. Many years ago I figured friends seeking random casual sex on Grindr (or whatever) had more honesty about their intentions than assorted 'high Lamas' on big thrones.
I don't know. It seems like sex in general is a drain on vital energies. It seems to take about two weeks to fully recover vitality after sexual activity. I think there is something to be said about abstaining from sex to maintain one's vital energies. This I think is mostly applicable to males.
I know you have talked about your teacher and sex scandal before. But I wondered if he wasn’t “Japanese highly enlightened being” if he would of gotten away with sex with students. What if he was a therapist and did what he did to students to clients They would of lost there license and if it went on for decades there could of been criminal charges.
Since the Tibetan Buddhist traditions arrived in the West there has been an ever growing list of prominent teachers who have groomed and abused students. Little or not action has been taken whilst appalling behaviour is often justified by drawing on teachings about 'Guru devotion', 'pure vision' and 'emptiness'.
Hi my friend. What a question!! I was single for many...many...years. One day I woke up and something had shifted. I was a monk then, and a thought hit me: I would like a companion. I wasn't saying it out of desire or need but it was more like seeing this was true, it was time for a companion. I had to do other things in my life -- like be a monk, a writer -- and go through some terrible stuff -- including the Worst Relationship of My Life (which lasted years) -- before I could get into a decent relationship. So maybe, do your thing, work hard on yourself, work really hard on becoming yourself, a solid version of yourself. Then the partner comes? I think there's some truth to this.
Maybe it helps to do something big and committed and important and dangerous and exciting for yourself...something good. And then you don't need a partner. And then she comes!! ;)
You probably just had the same kind of phantasies as your teacher during zazen. I don't share this feeling, the male gaze doesn't often find what he likes. Probably 0.1 percent of women are interesting as a partner, at closer look. Sexually perhaps 2 percent.
Thank you for your honest, funny and nuanced teachings. I very much value your transparency, and I'm sure others too!
You are so welcome. Thank you for saying so!

You might be right, a lot of theories and practices come down on this side.
When complete celibacy isn't an option, reduction (as Mr. Haubner points out) might be a good start.
Might not be the best thing for relationships though.
Truth.
Did you and Brad do a joint interview with Guru Viking?
We did! Not sure when it'll be posted tho.
@@zenconfidential25 awesome! It's my birthday and the only present I got was "single white monk"
Oh man that's great, I hope it doesn't make you barf up your bday cake!! ;)
