Canvas does need to be "seasoned" or "cured", however it really only takes a relatively short time, depending upon its weight. 10oz. canvas duck takes longer than 8oz. The problem with taking a long term approach to it is, unless the whole tent has been treated with some high quality inhibitor to prevent UV damage, it will start degrading and will eventually fail. Usually in the worst location possible, and at the worst time. It is not as bad of a problem as it is with untreated nylon tents, but it's bad enough. In my experience (over 40+ years from Cub Scouts on) a week in the late spring, where you have rain and sun, warm and cool, and stiff breezes is best. The important thing is to allow tent to dry completely before stowing it away. Never store a dirty, wet or even damp piece of canvas. Mold and mildew will wreck it. Remove and mud or dirt with lukewarm water and a soft bristle brush, let dry completely and fold for storage in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. Also, canvas will always leak if you touch it while wet. Your touch disrupts the surface tension of the water in the weave allowing it to pass through. So, it should be avoided. Just my opinion, based on a lot of experience with canvas. Good luck, and thanks for sharing.
i did start off hosing it and letting it dry but gave up after 20 times or so. its coming down this summer and stored away, your right about making sure its clean and dry (very important) this is very heavy duty rip stop canvas it weighs around 60kg total. the tent is uv treated before they go to the qms so its ready to go. they do fine in camp bastion (afgan) good heavy duty stakes is a must in high winds too. the rot proof rubberised skirts will need extra attention too. thanks for your comment - most welcome cheers
Well I tried water proofing,my 12x12 Ex Army tent, materials, just under £60 pounds,6 months down the line, still leaking,Best to get a fly sheet I think,Ther is some fab, tarps on e bay to do the job, Army Green as well, sorted,£65 new, 12x12 very good quality as well, Like rubber, cheers guys,🍺🍺🏕🏕 Keit,France,
3 weeks in more than enough it can also be done in a afternoon...and leaving a tent up long turn is a really bad idea as u will damage it with uv and then it really won't be any good.
Top tip mate, had the same issue with my oztent rv4 last year, wasn't to impressed at its first outing, as it leaked a bit, then read the instructions and low and behold it said... season before use, apparently this goes with all polycotton canvas type tents.... another life lesson learnt lol atb
You're quite right, in the absence of a UV inhibitor, canvas will age/deteriorate most where the UV beats it. Rotating a tipi could even out your exposure if conditions allow it.
Realize that's canvas and high-quality tent and you do it out of the truck but I do the same thing with two 3 by 3 tent tarps I haft the in space weight
funky I would then just spray the stitching with some silicon after your year I did it on my tent of nylon did the same I left it up over the winter but it still leaked so I just brought a can of waterproofing silicon it does not leak I had it up for 6 months
Ave just bought a 2 man dutch h army tent from eBay got a fair few looks like holes so going too try a beeswax and normal candle wax 50/50 melt and paint the whole tent has anyone any ideas on this method or others would be much appreciated ,a can get real beeswax from a friend who keeps bee's .
Liam & the wild child That would be very expensive but it would work to a degree. You need to look up an art method called Batik. It is what you are describing.
I always Mix the beeswax w natural oil 50/50 minimum but usually more oil like 3/4 oil 1/4 beeswax but then its highly flamable soooo..... can use on clothes or boots etc used to wax my boots like that for many years
i used fabsil on my smaller tent (video uploading now) this is bigger and very heavy duty as you know. its water proof all right. lol i was breathing in

Never store a dirty, wet or even damp piece of canvas. Mold and mildew will wreck it polycotton cannot build mildew... LOL
Well mine has been seasoning out in my back yard for over 3 weeks and still leaking like a siv !!!!!!!
Set it up and hose it down inside and out saturate during summer. Allow it to completely dry and this usually shrinks canvas material. R.I.P. grass!

Linseed oil is not a chemical it's a natural sealer to and you can do it that way to re-season your tent pancakes two days work to dry
Nice One... Thank You... We Live & Learn...John Scotland

What about UV rays? I would like to leave my tipi up year round but I am afraid the sunlight would destroy it.
