Joseph, I wish we could talk on the phone. Your discussion about the healing qualities not being specific or targeted to particular healing is completely on target. It relates to a very interesting concept found within Jewish teaching about the contrast between what is called "Ohr HaSovev" or "Encompassing/Permeating Light" and "Ohr HaMemaleh" or "Filling Light". The sound or voice emanating from the singing bowls pertains to that Encompassing Light/Radiation. It is the concept of non-specific influence which effects the whole and is not bound or limited by the confines of what receives it (the listener or in the context of your talk, specific organs or diseases).

I soooo appreciate this video. I have been looking for a bowl. I had already learned about manufactured vs handmade. Through videos and reading I learned, as you said, that there are not chakra bowls traditionally. What I have been looking for them is help ground me with my anxiety. It is refreshing to hear myths dispelled. I went to a sound therapy at (you guessed it) my yoga studio. One thing that didn't resonate with me is: "If a sound is jarring to you, that means you need that sound". At one point I was clenching my teeth I hated certain sounds so much. Came out of there deciding that was not for me. Not sure if you have any insight to that, but that to me sounded more like these chakra and planet bowls. Possibly a way to sell something that isn't all that tuned or spectacular. I do LOVE the really deep tones of the large bowls and am looking (and listening) to individual ones on websites to figure out which is for me. Thank you for this video.

Thank you for explaining this for people who don't know about it. I was a massotherapist and used music for the massage I did. (Epilepsy kinda stopped that on an a career.) I know that music and vibrations work very well for health- not extreme, but for just 'aches and sores' kinda thing.
You're welcome. Sound can be very beneficial but when people get too specific, we just don't have the knowledge. I think we'll know more in the future and the possibility for sound in health is significant.

Thank you fr your advice, and for debunking healing properties of singing bowls. Inasmuch as I love them and use them in my every day life, for meditation, focus and healing, I find it annoying when people come up with superstitious myths. They're great enough as they are, no need for magic!
What do you think about applying singing bowls directly over someone's head? Real practice or modern exaggeration?

Thanks for taking the time to comment! For singing bowls over the head, I think it is simply what you want to make of it (I tend to find it enjoyable). The mind is very powerful-you can use the singing bowl as a launching point for your mind to start the healing process, or you can use acupuncture/medicine/yoga/etc. as a launching point. Some people truly do have healing from using singing bowls; it’s not the actual bowl doing the healing but the mind, and the bowl was an acceptable medium for the mind to heal through. Just as a placebo sugar pill can be an acceptable medium for the mind to heal the body. It’s interesting-believing it can heal you makes it more likely for you to heal, while not believing it makes it less likely. I think it all ties back to the power of our thoughts :)

Thank you for this information! I'm thinking of taking Vibrational Sound Therapy Certification with Singing Bowls course offered by VSA. Two bowls are included in the price of the course ($2100US). What is your opinion about the quality of the bowls they sell and the instruction provided? Could I learn this reading books and using my own senses and techniques shown in videos on UA-cam?
Hi, I do not believe any such course is necessary or beneficial to use singing bowls. Such a course will contain a lot of filler material unrelated to singing bowls. I do not know the content of this particular course but I would not trust the person who runs it. He built his business on lies about singing bowls. I am confident such a course will be filled with misinformation and misleading content.
Hi, what's the difference of the effect on a person by listening to sound on the headphone or listening to the sounds produced by a real bowl inside your room?
Hi Annie-listening with headphones will let you know how the bowl sounds, but you will have a richer, fuller experience listening to it in person. The bowl’s vibrations and the different ways you can play it can’t be captured by just listening to a recording of the bowl being struck. I hope this helps!
Very interesting. I've heard people say that dissonant bowls can be good for clearing energy. Would you disagree with this?
I think it depends how dissonant the bowl sounds. Personal preference matters as well. Vibrations linger in a room and the feeling can stay with a person. So a smooth, in tune vibration is preferable. Out of tune (dissonant) sounds can put you on edge. Well tuned bowls have a much nicer feeling and lasting effect - some people remember a singing bowl experience for years. The best sounding bowls are very harmonious. However, many are out of tune and people say all kinds of things to sell them. That's often part of these ideas. Sellers often use spiritual sounding ideas as selling stories for singing bowls.

I kinda knew that. How do they tune them? Removing metal, changing shape? Doesnt it always change all of the tones at once? I thought these harmonics are always in tune, that it's given by laws of physics that some harmonics happen at the same piece of material...
Even if it sounds off and out of tune I think of it like "ok this is the harmonics of this fundamental tone I must acknowledge whether I like it or not.
Can you put it into a test with some cheap modern brass bowl? How cool would it be? Recording and measuring the tones in Hz after grinding the rim a bit, then hammering the rim out, then sanding material off the whole surface,...
I dont think they are actually able to tune them at will in Nepal. Maybe they hammer the "S" out of them untill they sound and look ok
Singing bowls are not tuned to a specific pitch. They are hammered until they sound good. There's no specific frequency trying to be attained as would be in a tuned instrument, like a church bell tuned to an accurate note. Any tunable instrument, like a violin or piano, you tune it around a tonal center like A 440 or A442. This is never done with singing bowls. It is possible to fine tune them by removing material - that's how church bells, gongs and tuned bells are tuned. However, it is very labor intensive and the singing bowl makers have never done it. They are more old world artisans and not going into that level of detail. Your other question about tuning, no the harmonics do not always line up. In most cases, the harmonics are out of tune. It's not simply the tone of the material and the harmonics are not always in perfect relationship. The shape of the bowl, including minor irregularities in the shape, rim and variations in thickness all affect the tone and change the pitch of the harmonic overtones. Any instrument can be in tune or out of tune. For example a string if the length, thickness and tension are not correct, the harmonics are not in correct relationship with the fundamental tone. It's the same with a singing bowl or any bronze instrument. The physical properties will determine the tone and the harmonic relationships are not necessarily correct. If the bowl is hammered a bit more or less, it will have a different tonal quality and different harmonic relationships. They can't be hammered once they're finished, so there's no way to adjust the tone except by lathing off some material. The best way to find a specific tone is simply to go through a lot of bowls until you find the right tone. We do a lot of the work for you because we only select bowls that are already nicely in tune, but the harmonic relationships can vary and still sound pretty well in tune. It's not as exact a science as you may think. There are a lot of combinations possible with 3 or 4 audible tones and thousands of possible frequencies.
Singing bowls aren't intentionally tuned. The harmonic relationships are dictated by variations in the size, shape and thickness. Different materials have different tonal qualities. While they all do indeed produce harmonics, they do not all sound the same and you do not get the same beautiful sound with other materials.

People have very personal responses! That's why I always recommend to listen and feel the experience for yourself. The musical note is just one thing to consider. Other qualities to the sound and vibration seem to matter more. Especially with my real hand hammered singing bowls - you really feel them a lot more.

Why are they so damn expensive!?
Yes to a certain degree the larger, the deeper but the thickness of the bowl is just as important. There are many inexpensive brass bowls but real singing bowls are hand hammered bronze and start around $50. My bowls are real handmade items, individually crafted and have perfect sound.
