    Good perspective on following your personal feeling. I've been guiding people similarly for 25 years. To clarify your questions about tuning and how the bowls produce sound, the real bronze bowls (new or antique) produce 3 distinct tones: the low fundamental tone, a harmonic overtone (1 octave higher) and a very high harmonic overtone (1 octave higher again). You can hear the 3 tones at once. How well tuned the bowl sounds depends on how well tuned those 3 tones are with each other. When a bowl has good internal harmony, you can really hear the difference. Out of tune bowls don't feel the same and don't sound nearly as beautiful. There are also frequencies outside our hearing range. There are other intangible qualities to the sound and vibration that are important, too. It's not just the frequency at all, especially when you get into the amazing antiques. Like you said, this tuning idea extends to making a set of multiple bowls: you want to combine bowls that sound great together. They really do something amazing when you make a good combination. Unfortunately, most people just put notes together: C, D, E and that doesn't work. You have to match all those multiple frequencies by ear to get that special sound and vibration.

    Very nice presentation, Nick. I got my first bowl in the early 1990s (a Japanese rin), but really didn't get the hooked until 2017. I too prefer the hand-hammered Himalayan bowls, though over the years I've picked up Thai, Vietnamese and Korean bowls as well, and branched out a bit with gongs. I will def try to join your next live stream.

      I’ve branched out a little myself, but I keep coming back to the Himalayan bowls. Really though, why limit myself.
      A great instrument is a great instrument, and I really like bringing together ones that wouldn’t have been played together traditionally.
      Cheers!

    Thanks, Nick! Really insightful information! How do you recommend purchasing bowls online without hearing them first?

    • @themysticnextdoor
      @themysticnextdoor  3 місяці тому +2

      Most places will be able to provide a recording so you can get a general idea of the sound and pitch. That's pretty helpful. Buying in sets online, as opposed to single bowls since they are ostensibly matched and tuned with one another.

    Thanks for this video. In the process of buying a bowl. I really liked that first bowl. What size/tone was that & where would be a good place to do an online purchase? I know many recommend going to a shop to physically listen & feel them out, but there really isn’t many shops around my way with signing bowls. Thanks in advance !

      Hey there, that’s a very special bowl. The first one I ever bought in fact, from a dusty little shop in Rishikesh. It’s between a C and a C#. A little closer to a C.
      I’ve purchased almost all of my bowls in person because it’s important to me to hold and play them myself.
      As far as online options, you could check out The Ohm Store (www.theohmstore.co/). They have a really nice selection and knowledge of the instruments.
      Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the great video. Of necessity I have to buy online, which is obviously not the best. Some of the larger old hand hammered bowls, which I do love, are very expensive now and I wonder if it is worth spending so much on them, just because of size and age?

    • @themysticnextdoor
      @themysticnextdoor  4 місяці тому

      I think many of the older bowls I've run across are really beautiful and well worth the price. I have a few of them and really treasure them.
      It took me years to curate the set that I have. And I've been through quite a few bowls that were really wonderful in their own way, but just didn't fit or blend the way I wanted, and I didn't know it until I got them home. Rather than have them sit around unplayed, I put them up for sale.
      If I had to go back and do it over again, I might start with a newly made set and build from there.

    Does sound therapy work primarily thru the body (not the ears)? If so, what is the difference between generating the sound thru a floor speaker versus a bowl or tuning fork? Are the sound/vibrations from a crystal or metal bowl somehow different from the sound vibrations coming out of a speaker? Would a high quality player/speaker be 10% as effective.. 90%?
    Also any thoughts on those $1500 authentic hand-made Tibetan ("healing" or "therapy" grade bowl) that uses 7 different metals.. versus the more affordable machine-made ("Tourist" grade) metal bowls? Crystal / Quartz bowls? I've read that all bowls are in C-key/major (260hz), and the difference is in the pitch (B, A, G, F, E, D, C : 100hz-900hz)? Is it best for someone else to perform the sound-therapy on you, or is it just as effective to do it one self?
    BTW, do you have any recommendations for a meditation practice/program? I see so many interesting ones, but not sure which could help me. Do you know if any of these are any good?

      I love how curious you are about sound therapy.
      I’d highly recommend you explore for yourself and take a class to find the answers you’re looking for.
      You’ll find many high quality virtual experiences on my channel. Listen to them on different speakers and headphones to see what you notice that’s different.
      Find some in-person sound healings near you, and compare and contrast the experiences.
      If you’re looking for a good course, I highly recommend Becca Laureto, The Meta Musician.

    great video, Im looking more into the bell frequency that can help cleanse the space Im living, but couldnt find that specific questión so its more like a go try and pick one

    • @themysticnextdoor
      @themysticnextdoor  Рік тому +1

      Yes. Many frequencies can help cleanse space. One specific frequency is typically too narrow to do a thorough job.
      You're looking for a bowl or bell that 1) resonates with you and 2) has a rich series of overtones to cover a broader spectrum.
      Try this while you're searching. Play this video at a low volume in the space you want cleansed overnight. It was designed for pets, but it will also work really well for spaces. ua-cam.com/video/iDxiEpyYj9c/v-deo.html
      Let me know how that works.
