It's not true to say that beauty doesn't exist in the Roman rite. In fact it's everywhere. But we did forego some of the classical beauty of the church.
I'm a lifetime Roman Catholic but follow the Eastern Rite Ukrainian Catholic Church, and greatly admire the Patriarch His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk. The beauty of the churches (cerkva), the astonishing beauty of the altar area representing the image of heaven. The breathtaking wall of icons (Iconostasis) depicting the story of Salvation. Most importantly, the priest/celebrant faces the Tabernacle not the congregation. The chants and hymns of the priest, deacon(s), and choir can move me to tears, especially the prayerful singing of the Our Father. It saddens me, and many Latin Rite Catholics to reflect on the beauty we have discarded, removing lovely statues, defacing towering altars, banishing Latin hymns and services, all in the name of Ecumenism. The statistics of practicing RC parishioners tells us just how successful these changes were.. One more comment on the Ukrainian Catholic Church, which is under the auspices of the Vatican; why is the Patriarch HB Sviatoslav not addressed properly by the Latin hierarchy? The entire world honors him as Patriarch with the exception of RC clergy, who insist on referring to him as Major Archbishop! A title that is not only insulting, but also non-existent. Could it be that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with its greater numbers is more politically important??
@@Kitiwake Wish we could bring back more of that classical beauty in the Catholic Church… especially those glorious main and side altars to God pre-Vatican II versus the performance stages I find in so many church’s today. Beauty in the Church and Catholic Faith attracts and draws people in to God!
This is why I love listening to this wonderful man: his great intellect and curiosity in the service of clear and beautiful thinking. A complete delight, this was!
"The clearest sign that a reform movement has gone bad is when people start destroying beautiful things." A very thought-provoking lecture! It is a great idea when evangelizing to begin with beauty, move to good and finally reach truth

Try to experience your inheritance of a high mass in the now “extraordinary” form of the Traditional Latin Mass of the Ages! You may be very well impressed and forced to be humbled before God! 🙏
That's really nice Mathew⭐ You remind me of an identical comment, only more often, by individuals who have returned to the Faith having listened to Bishop Barron⭐
As a child I do remember a little bit of being the earlier Tridentine Mass. As I came of age in the late 60s and early 70s, I went with the flow of the New Order of thr Holy Mass. Yes, I do agree that the Traditional Latin Mass is more reverent, but both styles are much more beautiful than any protestant "service." I never really stayed from Catholicism in all my 66 years.
Thanks Bishop Baron! God bless you🙏 Yes, It is a beautiful religion and is the true religion 🙏📿 I went around looking the God of love and Mercy in others religions. What happened to me after 25 years I returned home like the prodigal son🙏📿 Jesus is Lord Glory to God
Gregorian Chant is also a beautiful gift of music in prayer and praise from our Catholic tradition… even better when found in the celebration of the mass in a great church!
*"The Catholic Church right now in the Western world is one of the last great Defenders of the true and the good and the Beautiful."* - BISHOP ROBERT BARRON
Especially those defending the Traditional Latin Mass of the Ages… but not all of the Catholic Church is defending that currently. Sadly some parts of the church are acting like an Ouroboros.
I asked God through a poem I read many years ago to give me a thankful heart . . . I didn’t sit back and wait for that answer . . . I began to seek it every day, and still do - every day - seek that blessed state of heart that fills me with love, pure, true and satisfying love, your ministry has become one of my sanctuaries for renewal of mind and heart in a world that can be so heartless, God comes alive in me. Thank you, Bishop Barron (Father) for your irreplaceable ministry in my life.
The beauty of Catholic practices and houses of worship is what has caused me to rebuke and repent of my atheism and rebellion against God and to accept Christ as my savior. The Holy Spirit was present when my best friend showed me the Basilica Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. I was moved by the astounding beauty of the architecture and art, which brings rightful glory to God. The Holy Spirit was there with us that day and it never left me. I walked into that cathedral an atheist, and walked out a burdgeoning Christian. The Catholic catechisms and practices steadily draw me to them. Perhaps one day I will enter RCIA and be confirmed on the most holy day of Easter.
It’s true, seeing all these Catholics together lifts us up! I’m at home as a special needs mom and watching this brings me together with my Catholic family. ❤ Edit: Praise God for John of Damascus! My daughter has significant autism and has a communication disorder. She’s learning about Jesus through the beautiful traditional Catholic Church we attend. The bright stained glass windows duplicating the saints, the organ music (we always sit right next to the organist) the beautiful artworks all around are teaching her about our faith where words cannot as yet. She loves going to church and draws pictures of it at home. Mother Church is a genius teacher.
I had the same reaction when I was in Paris on New Year’s Day. Exhausted and jet lagged I told my atheistic French husband I wanted to go to mass at Notre Dame hear the beautiful choir and spend a lot of time in front of that North window. Chartres has a rose window is gorgeous. The beautiful churches in Europe were the only reason my husband went into those churches. Beautiful is definitely a evangelist.
Dear Lord praying for dearest Bishop Barron that you give him the anointing of the double portion of your Holy Spirit to save millions of souls for your Kingdom. Give him perfect health and safeguard him from all evil and seen and unseen dangers as he goes on this evangelization ministry of the US and the whole world. We thank you Jesus for the gift of him . All glory to you Lord.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💕
Thank you. In Maine there is a Basilica St. Peter and St Paul. I visited it for the first time this year. The stained class windows and the beauty of the architecture did indeed touch my heart. Never in today's world would a church such as this be built. I think of the catholics of that time and the sacrifices made for construction of this church. It is the only Basilica in Maine. The ultimate beauty transcends generations of Catholics . We all share God's overwhelming love and maybe the beauty of the stain glass and the architecture is our gift back to God as well as to each other through the years.
I always strive to find more of these (pre-Vatican II) truly architecturally beautiful Catholic churches that inspire and connect with the faith so well!
Beauty is what brought me back to the Faith after many years of being an Atheist. I live in the Minneapolis area and for months I had the strong urge to go the Basilica of Saint Mary here. I couldn’t explain it since I was an Atheist and didn’t usually care about things like that. I can only say it was the Holy Spirit in retrospect. But I visited it and the immense beauty immediately changed me. It was actually quite uncomfortable at first because I felt that the state I was in was inadequate but it gave me a strong desire to come back to God and the Catholic Faith, and that’s what I did. I debated this stuff intellectually all the time but what really was the spark was beauty, it truly is a powerful thing.
God is very detailed on how He wants priests to dress, how the tabernacle has to look like and he was very detailed on how the ark of the covenant supposed to look. I was very surprised how detailed God is and the emphasis on beauty is beyond imagination. Thank you Bishop Barron
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
Sorry to mess with your humility Bishop Barron, however YOU ARE AMAZZZZZING! I am truly overwhelmed with the BEAUTY of your tongue n wisdom! Absolutely AWESOME! Thank you from the deepest recesses of my heart! 😲😲😲 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇦🇺
Fully agree with your comment. “ sorry to mess up your humility “. 😂 I think I’ve actually fallen in love with him ….he is incredible. I wish he’d say something that would make me say , “ what a jerk”. Lol .
There is a reason why billions of people have travelled across the world to see our Cathedrals. I live in Savannah GA where we have a gorgeous cathedral, I can see the entrance through my apartment window. Every day I watch as hundreds of people walk in and out of the doors and the beauty of the building brings so much peace and joy to them. It could bring the non Catholics/ non Christians one step closer to conversion as they feel the goodness of the place and realize that hey, there might be something to this. That cathedral was where my heart was converted so I can personally attest to the power of its beauty..
I concur 100% with a Savannah cathedral. Extremely beautiful. As you might know, Bishop Barron is a great fan of Flannery O’Connor. I tried to visit her house/museum which is not far from the cathedral, but it wasn’t open at that time.
@@jrorganbuilding Oh yes she went to mass at the cathedral and she attended the girl's school next it. Hardly ever had to leave the square :D I went inside the museum
When I was in high school I was a member of a youth orchestra that went around to different churches to accompany weddings, carol singing, etc. I still remember the non-Catholic kids walking into Old St Peter’s in Mansfield, Ohio and standing there with their mouths open just taking in the ornate Italian style ceiling and stained glass windows.
This is such an important message -- "lead with beauty" for evangelization. It reminds me of Bishop Barron's Catholicism (video) series, where he travels the world showing the beauty in Catholic places, Churches and more. I especially like his comment about baseball as a young kids; I knew what he was going to say because my memory is much the same (only Fenway Park not Tiger Stadium) -- my Dad and Grandfather taking me and then, coming out to the seats and seeing the beautiful green grass and bright lights (and the "Green Monster"); it was just overwhelming and something that I never forgot -- beauty -- that keeps baseball special for me even to this day.
Thank you very much Rev . Bishop for what you are doing , giving us all the inspirational talk & etc . I am always praying rosary qday w/ you spec . my husband died last July 2022. It makes me feel at peace . Pls . cont to pray for our family , good health & for our grand children be able to finish thier educationfor all of this I pray . Amen.🙏❤️
If you ever get to Spain, go to city and cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the traditional burial place of saint James (Santiago) and have a look at the restored beauty of the sanctuary. You will never forget it.
🎉thank you Bishop Barron !! I love seeing Catholics celebrating the beauty of the faith as I have been painting Piero della Francesca’s Baptism of Christ all week 😊
Not only a good lecture on beauty but, fittingly, a beautiful lecture too. The way Bp. Barron connected Plato and the open sea of beauty to Dante and the reflections upon the Rose window... wow.
'the extraordinary harmony of that window, was placing some kind of harmony in me', exactly right. I'm not a Catholic, but when asked what kind of music I like, I specifically mention Catholic polyphony of the Renaissance, because it does exactly that, it allows you to 'surrender to a higher harmony' which I now see as a route to the divine, and so Bishop Barron is so right that this is something for Catholics to emphasise. After all, in the case of Catholic sacred music, it reaches into the secular concert hall, what other evangelising message can do that?
I am reading Brideshead Revisited for lent. It is not entertainment. It is soul piercing. The need for mercy and salvation found in the Catholic Church understood...
How WONDERFUL that not only did I hear Bishop Barron's talk before, but NOW I am seeing the added visuals & his actual presentation too. It is profound.
I thanks my friend for introducing you Bishop Barren to me a few months ago! I enjoy to listen to your beautiful and faithful messages that comes directly from the guidance of The Holy Spirit through you! Please always pray for lost shepherds of The Lord Jesus Christ our savior and your follower so they always stay in the path of the truth which is our Jesus Christ iur Lord.🙏
Bishop Barron, your speech was a Beauty (pun intended 😁) As usual you graciously stroll through deep concepts, charming stories and interesting and important people. I pray to God for you to continue your ministry for many years and keep you Holy. God bless
thank you for teaching this, Your Grace. I teach karate myself, and I often find it very hard to get younger students invested in the more regimental drills. perhaps I need to show them more of the beauty of the art first!
Love it. Let's recover the beauty of our religion, each and every one of us. Rituals are important. What we do with our bodies matters. Let's kneel before the Lord, when we receive him in communion.
THAT retreat was a highlight of this life of mine. Thank you so much for allowing the reliving of this event, I hope there are more talks, from these days , posted
My oldest daughter went to St. Chappell in France with her Grandmother and multiple other teens and adults for choir. She mentioned that was a highlight of their trip.
Hi Bishop Barron. Thank you for this wonderful talk. Would you consider giving us a talk on The Mystical City of God by Venerable Mary of Agreda and the way of beauty?
Hello, if you are not indifferent, you can read. Once I was a believer, I believed in forgiveness, I was ruled by hope and I wanted a better life for myself. Do not think that I wanted huge wealth or unlimited power. I dreamed of starting a family, a decent home and a good, favorable and honest life. But once I lost faith, when a very painful blow came into my life from a person who was close to me, I eventually forgave her and let go, but my faith is dead. No matter how hard I try, after what I've experienced, I can't believe. Thanks to everyone who read.
I'm so sorry that you were so deeply hurt. I understand that pain can alter our judgment and decisions in life, but please reflect on the fact that all of us are challenged many times, by injustice, humiliation, grief, and a plethora of pain. It's imperative that we call on God the Almighty in these times, because He knows all, and has counted and measured your pain. Regardless of your present status, He's waiting patiently and lovingly for your return. Remember the Scripture story of the prodigal son? How many of us have related to it, now and through the ages! I'm certain that your faith isn't extinguished, it is simply sleeping, and Jesus will enlighten it again, all it takes is to humbly pray, "Jesus help me!" He can give you a whole new life. I pray that He does.
Keep praying. God wants you to be at peace. Assail the Heavenly Throne with requests and demands. If you truly lament the loss of your piety, then that lamentation is evidence that your faith is not yet dead.
I started reading and watching bishop's books and videos years ago and he changed my life and my relationship with God. John Lennox is another genius for God I love listening to.
Thank you very much Bishop Barron for this talk you explained it so well I agree and I enjoyed listening to you I love it , beautiful,God bless you always ❤️
Bishop Barron, your blessing! Speaking of beauty, you need, one day, to visit the cathedral of Dom Bosco, in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. She is beautiful!
I love how he explains Beauty I am a SCD and images of the beauty draws me to the wholeness of the circle of Love we share as we Dance for the source of all life The Christ in each Soul body and mind of each dancer ❤
Christ gave us pure truth and pure beauty. Our traditions and great cathedrals have so much emotionally moving beauty. How sad that the years following Vatican ll the modernists insisted upon striping our sanctuaries of the beauty of our traditions. The parish to which I belong has a sanctuary built with the “ simplicity” motifs. We have a gorgeous crucifix upon the alter but no other obvious ornamentation. Our new pastor took the beauty of the simplicity and added two statues-one on each side of Our Blessed Lady and St. Joseph. What a difference it made. Over and over I hear people say “now I feel as though I am in a Catholic Church”. There is a sense of increased reverence . Bishop Barren so aptly relayed how God’s beauty can and does effect our souls. I hope that more pastors will embrace the traditional and the sacred when determining the architecture of religious buildings.
Today I listened to Beethoven's 7th Symphony for the first time in half a century--I might as well say for the first time. I recognized the music from the second movement, which is repeated again towards the end. It is moving beyond words. No wonder Beethoven is thought to be the greatest composer of all time. It is the music that gets to me more than anything except the beauty of a woman. Whether it is "subjective feeling" or "emoting"--I don't care. I think the experience of beauty brings me closer to my higher power.
What a beautiful talk! I was mesmerized. I found this to be so true in my life with my relationship to the church and how it has brought me to where I am.
I remember in the 1970’s priests who with GREAT GLEE destroyed everything beautiful in the churches. It’s really an adolescent bratty impulse to reject all that has come before. It’s time we grow up and form a mature perspective and appreciate the beauty of our glorious heritage.
That was the Silly 60s and 70s, when any capitulation to modernity was hailed as being in the “spirit of Vatican II.” So many churches were “wreckovated” into ugly crap.
Makes me think of Bishop Gerety of New Jersey. In the 1970s he single handedly chain sawed the high altars out of the great churches on the east coast. Reducing them to the ascetic of prison gymnasiums. He was applauded for his modern zeal.
As a youth I went through a very difficult time. I spent many hours sitting alone in our church, that was when they were always open. It was there I met Jesus Christ and again He gave me life. Years later, in my mid teens, it was decided that they would rebuild our church. They took away all that was beatiful and moving and replaced it with a modern building. It so disturbed me that I stopped going to church and I did not return until after we started our family at another church. It does matter. We need to return to the Beauty of our church, our mass, our music. It all matters. Praise God. Bless you Bishop Barron. 🙏🏼🕊🌹💗
This was very inspiring, Bishop. Thank you. I was especially moved by how you took us from Joyce back to the rose window with Christ at the center. Christ the ordering center of our lives and all beauty. I think there is more to explore here. I hope you do more talks on beauty and the connection to Catholic Christian faith and evangelization. Thank you.
7:00 Attracted by the Beauty of Our Catholic Tradition! Amen!🙏✝️⛪️ We pray the beauty of the Traditional Latin Mass of the Ages remains an inheritance to attract the many devout and faithful! Also we pray to bridge the divide with our Orthodox brethren in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic faith!
the true beauty stems deep from within the sufferings of Jesus brought about by our sins & yet his unconditional sacrifice that emanates pure love for us, GOD’s love for us ,unworthy we are is the very source of what makes life beautiful ,meaningful & purposeful.
Bishop Barron, there is so much beauty in the way you present and articulate "beauty" in your presentation on "beauty" at this News Conference. I wanted to share a line that was especially marked in my French Literature book when reading an excerpt of Paul Claudel's "Mort du Judas": Il y a en moi un appetit de logique,ou si vous aimez mieux une espece de sentiment moyen, qui n'est pas satisfait.Un instinct de la mesure."
This is funny. I explained all of the rules of baseball to my (rather intelligent) 5 year old great nephew while watching about 4 innings of a game between the Yankees and the Red Sox….(I overlooked the infield fly rule though, ha ha). I took him to an Okotoks Dawgs game the next week though. So I guess I went Truth then Beauty, not sure we got to Good yet.
Recently, followed another talk by this most illustriously riveting and so very powefully Being Used (By The Holy Spirit)...Bishop Barron, in which His Excellency took us right back to Genesis...Which is exactly where this comment posting would also like to take us to: The Unfolding Of Events at CREATION!!...Starting on day#1, Skipping to day#3 and onwards to day#6...GOD Perceived The Beauty of The Created Conception...So, isn't it only DIVINE, GOD-ly...to see Beauty in Beauty!!?...something to think about, right..!!?..!!🙋♂️...GOD Bless!!!

Why No Pope from USA and ASIA or Africa? Must a Pope be for Life?
@@Kitiwake Wish we could bring back more of that classical beauty in the Catholic Church… especially those glorious main and side altars to God pre-Vatican II versus the performance stages I find in so many church’s today. Beauty in the Church and Catholic Faith attracts and draws people in to God!

Our Mass is so Beautiful...we have such a wonderful religion. Our art...prayers.. ceremonies all are beautiful.
Be it known: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry.
Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples!
These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."
Revelation 22:8-9 KJV
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
Acts 2:38 KJV
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Luke 11:13 KJV
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
John 14:21-24 KJV
21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.*
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.*
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.*
3 John 1:11 KJV
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.*
1 John 3:6-10 KJV
6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.*
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.*
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.*
10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.
100% agree.
I have experience of Spanish and French religious expression and there is no doubt about that.
Try to experience your inheritance of a high mass in the now “extraordinary” form of the Traditional Latin Mass of the Ages! You may be very well impressed and forced to be humbled before God! 🙏
"I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwelleth ..."
The beauty and reverence of the traditional latin mass was a big part of my reversion to the faith.
That's really nice Mathew⭐
You remind me of an identical comment, only more often, by individuals who have returned to the Faith having listened to Bishop Barron⭐

I hope that’s true. Have to live up to it.
Pretty sure it’s actually, officially, truly the last such Defenders

How blessed am I to have been at this incredible conference. Blessed, blessed, blessed!!!!! Thank you and we pray for you always.

Edit: Praise God for John of Damascus!

Not only a good lecture on beauty but, fittingly, a beautiful lecture too. The way Bp. Barron connected Plato and the open sea of beauty to Dante and the reflections upon the Rose window... wow.
WOW indeed. Next level eloquence. Brilliant speaker, brilliant mind.
Grateful.
"I have the culinary taste of an eight year old." I love this man.

Bishop Barron, you’re awe awe awesome! 👍🙏😘
Paul VI was always a great champion of usng beauty to evangelise. +
