So, awkward confession: When this show started I was in high school but when I started high school I told myself to grow up and stop watching cartoons. However, I heard a few classmates talking about this show so I decided to sit down 1 day and watch it. Unfortunately, this episode was the very 1st episode I watched since it was airing new the night I decided to finally start watching the show. So, not only did I get spoiled for the 1st Season and half of the 2nd, but then the 2nd Season went on hiatus for half a year. On the bright side, I binged watch the rest of the show and fell in love with it, but I was still spoiled since so much of the show led up to this moment.
the fact that the choice comes down to mabel, a character who is rarely taken that seriously but who's always been the most empathetic, just makes that moment so impactful. its an incredible scene in an amazing episode, but that moment of mabel deciding to trust him even when nobody else does and has no reason to, really solidifies her as a character. she Knows people. she knew she could trust him bc she trusted herself
And she only trusts him because he said "please", a word that he was previously incapable of physically saying. They even had an entire episode based around that (when Mabel took over the Mystery Shack temporarily).
Spoilers for the rest of the series: . . . I actually love the fact that she’s given this scenario twice in this season. Once here, trusting the time spent with Stan. And later on with “Blendin”. Both even deal with opening up a gateway through dimensions. Logically Mabel shouldn’t trust Stan or Blendin, but she wants to believe in others. That time it ends poorly, while this time it ended well. It also fits as the character who doesn’t want to grow up, having her childish decision be their downfall. She’s not privy to the information Ford and Dipper kept hidden from her as well, so she has no evidence to believe he’s lying either, only going off of what she knows Blendin is capable of.
@@ma.2089Stan proved himself I'd say. He looked so genuine and said please - he never says please. But yeah the Blendin thing was her emotions getting the better of her
@@ma.2089 You forget Sock Opera: Give Bipper the Journal and let the play run smoothly until the end or Protect the Journal from him and destroy the project she's been working hard on for a week?
Now that you know that Grunkle Stan has been trying to get his twin brother back for years, it puts a whole new meaning to how he reacted to the creation and subsequent beheading of wax Stan, who not only looked just like him, but also looked just like his twin. Also, IMO this episode is the one where the show goes from being a really good show to being an absolutely great show. Or at least it's the episode where it finally becomes apparent just how great the show is, because it was always building up to this and what follows. Once you've finished watching the entire series, if you go back and re-watch it all you'll realize that pretty much everything was foreshadowed, and aside from some minor things it was all planned out from the beginning.
I was so shocked and satisfied with the reveal of the author, Alex Hirsch planned this out from the very beginning not only to truly have the perfect climax to start the story's endgame but we have all the evidence before this episode came out. 1.) first episode in the last scene we understand that Stan is hiding something. 2.) in the 3rd episode we see that stan seems very attached to the wax figure so he feels like he's hoping to see someone. 3.) the mystery shack itself and details of how the journals are being layed out there are so much more but these are the biggest ones I've noticed this is one of the best reveals of all time and Alex Hirsch set this all up perfectly.
I just realised when watching their reaction to the mini gold episode, in the end scene with Franz on the back of the car, you see the license plate says stnlypns Stanley pines.
Talking about the structure of the show, the fact that in season 1 you can see Blenden in the background of a couple of the first episodes collecting the stuff the kids drop in the later episode should tell you all you need to know about how well the show is thought out. Brilliant show, brilliant episode, can't wait for you to get to the next one
Never failed to make me felt emotional when Mabel starts sheding tears in this episode. Leaving all the choice's to trust or not trust Stan to her was really emotional
Just a quick note: Gruncle Stan is their Great Uncle, so he's their dad's uncle. It's not a spoiler, but he has a younger sibling who will be Dipper and Mable's grandpa, though he's not an important character in the story. Just to clear things up since I know it confuses people.
Small comment Shermie was their most likely their older sibling, and Ma pines was babysitting her grandson (the twins father) in the flashback episode. The twins are practically 13 and the flash back was from around 40 years ago. Far more likely that the twins dad became a parent at 27-28 than their grandfather becoming a grandparent at that age.
This is by far the best episode in the entire series. You go through so many emotions throughout the entire episode and by the end you get that surprise plot twist. I would say this hit more points than the whole season finale did!!
Unfortunately the show isn’t completely serialized going forward. There’s a couple adventure of the week episodes coming up, but the finale brings everything full circle. It’s a satisfying end. Looking forward to your reactions of who is the author next episode.
This wasn't a ride. This was just a straight up plummet. All the twists, the emotions. Oh god! this is easily the best episode of Gravity Falls, maybe even the best or at least top 10 best cartoon episodes of all time.
I didn’t use Tumblr back when this series was airing, I can only imagine the storm this episode created right after it aired with all the theories everyone had about who the author really was. I still get super excited seeing the reveal years later!

5:05 wtf Look at the subtitles. Dipper says "...could get the mystery shack..." and subtitles say "could get the mystery sex". These auto-generated subtitles are a miracle 👌
This is the best episode of gravity falls for me as someone who was in the fandom when the series was airing. Everyone was so divided on the twin theory. There's believers and deniers in the fandom. This episode just left the fandom in shambles
From this point on you’re totally in for a crazy adventure and more exposition!! One of the best episodes of the series. If you go back to previous episodes there’s hints to the twin brother/author twist. For example the carpet episode you see Stan pick up a pair of glasses similar to his brothers in that room Mable and Dipper were fighting over. Also in another episode you can see Stan put on gloves when working on the machine with 6 fingers.
You know what I just realized? Ford... If you put warnings not to use the machine, or something catastrophic happens... Why did he write it in invisible ink?
Hi Reel Rejects! I've said this before on another GF video but 2x7 is missing from your GRAVITY FALLS playlist! Just so you're aware! Glad you guys liked this amazing episode!
Alex Hirsch is an amazing writer Me personally I never saw this coming the other smart side of the community Did They all worked together even with Alex trolling making us think it was fiddleford But i just got chills and Goosebumps when I watched this for the first time
I'm sure people have mentioned in the earlier episode when Stan first turned on the machine and he loses his mug and pen, you see those pop out of a portal in Rick and morty season 1
Stan’s brother wouldn’t be one of Dipper & Mabel’s parents anyway because Stan is they’re GREAT uncle. So one of his siblings is the parent of one of Dipper and Mabel’s parents, aka Dipper and Mabel’s grandparent
Y'know, this was a very nice reaction. So far, I have been getting the feeling you guys weren't taking the show seriously, or didn't really care. That's not in a bad way either. It's completely understandable, I've been the same way through the journey. What a change this episode was. Very chilling, and focused more on the Suspense and Emotions and Visuals. This has been a slow and uneventful journey through the show but I'm glad to see you guys actually appeared to like this one.
BIG agree on loving those competent Grunkle Stan moments… every time we get a moment showing just how clever and physically capable Stan is golden. Seeing past that veneer of his is in those small moments is one of the things that makes this show so incredible. THANK YOU for this reaction and wonderful commentary! ❤️
I remember when these episodes were first airing back when I was in middle school (I am in college). Episodes started taking long to air. the last 3 episodes for this season took months apart to air.
The reason why Mabel let go is because Stan for the first time ever in his life, said please, and that is what made, Mabel believed him he was sincere about it
If you look through the series you can see little bits and pieces of this reveal peeking through. Like in the one where they go into Stan’s mind, Dreamscaperers. In the background of the boxing class memory you can see his brother in the background reading a book. This is a reveal that has been planned for so long. I absolutely love it
The show still has some hilarious episodes coming up. No worries there. And it really does stick the landing in the finale, because Alex Hirsch refused to drag it out into more seasons.

And as we and Mabel learned in S1E13, “Boss Mabel” Stan has trouble saying “please”
