  • On my walking tour of the OLD LAS PALMAS neighborhood of Palm Springs, today I spotted a few historic and celebrity homes. I started my walk at the historic Church of St. Paul Episcopal Church of the Desert in downtown Palm Springs.

    Thank you too all Vets, especially those who have died due to war. I am part of a Military family, some people can die due to an injury sustained in a war, well after the war. That could be for the vets who died in the 50's. BSM is Bronze Star Medal, and PH is a Purple Heart. Thank you for honoring our Vets today!

    It was great to hear about LGBT history of Palm Spring from an insider. Love your walk/talks. Wish I could live there - too expensive, but maybe I’ll take another look as I just retired. I had an inkling that LGBT presence in PS was due to early Hollywood - nice to see more information on that.

    Wow, it’s a steamy 90 degrees at 7 am in Houston. I’m surprised and proud that the town is gay friendly. I keep thinking of Frank & Bing Crosby and I don’t think they would have been on board 😆. It sounds like paradise, knowing that a tornado or hurricane won’t hit. 😻👍

    • @theretiredlifewithsteve
      @theretiredlifewithsteve  3 місяці тому

      Yikes, humidity is the worst! 🥵 that’s a good point about Frank and Bing. They both worked with hundreds of gay people during their careers and I’m sure they knew many of them were gay. They were both pretty macho, But Frank was also very supportive of civil rights, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he had gay friends and was supportive of the gay actors and singers and directors that he worked with. At least in private. It does make you wonder though. Thanks Tex and try to keep cool this week! 😎👍

I was even up long before the birds woke up on my last video lol. In this video I did see quite a few people out walking and jogging for exercise and also walking their dogs, but that’s usually about it. I kind of like the peace and quiet though. Hi Steve, Eric Meeks book says Della Reese had a trailer in the Ramon Trailer Park. Palm Springs was an early destination for folks with "canned ham" travel trailers. There are still many of the early parks full of vintage trailers and "mobile homes".

    • @theretiredlifewithsteve
      @theretiredlifewithsteve  3 місяці тому

      Hi Steve, thanks so much for mentioning Eric‘s buck. It’s one of the celebrity K bucks that I use when I’m taking my walks. I was wondering if anyone would mention his book or ask me which books I use. So far you are the first. There are so many celebrity homes in his book that I didn’t even notice that he included Della Reese. I walked through one of the older mobile home parks in an earlier video on this channel a few months ago. I’m planning to walk through others that are not gated. I’ve been wanting to take a walk through Ramon Park so if I’m able to do that in the near future I will give you a shout out and mention your comment. Thanks 😎👍

    In two weeks I am going to vacation in another very LGBT+ friendly town: Wilton Manors, Florida. It borders Fort Lauderdale. The two extremely charming and historic towns that are near where I live (I'm in Philly) are New Hope, Pennsylvania and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Have you ever visited these places? These towns are among of just a handful of towns with significant LGBT+ populations and huge numbers of businesses that cater to this community.

    It's nice to see that Palm Springs area is still as beautiful as it was when I worked there. Back in the 1970s early 80s
    I was a Culligan Man, Delivering water softener to celebrities homes.(And regular folks too) Well, one of my day's schedules included Frank Sinatra, Clint Walker, Liberache and Former President Gerald Ford. The only one I got to meet was Clint Walker, A very large and a very nice man.😊 Anyway, you reminded me Of the time back in the day when liberace sued two publications for liable after reporting that he was gay. Well, instead of coming out or denying it, he found a third option-PROVE IT in a court of law! He won both cases and Donated the judgment money to Charity. I mean( I think) everybody knew he was gay, but His victory was his private life was private, and it was gonna stay that way..😊

    I enjoyed your early morning Memorial Day walk and talk about the History of Palm Springs being open to Gay and LGBTQ lifestyles! I knew it was a movie star/rich and famous getaway back in the day so they could be close to LA, but now it makes more sense.
    In the Dec 30, 2019 issue of Palm Springs Life it notes that after Grace and Frankie ended Lily and Jane were looking to spend more time in their Palm Springs "vacation home". The title refers to her as (a part-time Palm Springs
resident). On the Zen Home Palm Springs Property Management site it states, "enjoy the beauty of Old Las Palmas homes with past and present owners such as Elizabeth Taylor, Liberace, Lily Tomlin..." So perhaps it was their vacation home getaway. Also in Oct. 2019 The Desert Sun noted when trying to raise money to restore The Plaza Theatre which Lily supported, it referred to Lily as "A former Palm Springs resident...". So my guess is she lived there (part time) or vacationed there but she was always very private about her personal life. I do remember she grew up in Detroit. Jane Wagner is from Nashville and its my understanding they live there now. Lily is in her mid-80's so I am guessing she is letting go of her "vacation homes." It would be like Lily to name the home The Lily Pad. 😉

    Palm Springs is not the only city that has a large gay population. NYC, home of over 41 Broadway theaters has a large gay population. Many being the entertainers and backstage people being dancers, actors, designers, and musicians. Where would Broadway be without them?

    I can't see that Sinatra would care one way or another about someone's sexuality. He was a big advocate of breaking down racial barriers, such as the one facing fellow rat packer Sammy Davis Jr-who was allowed to perform in "white" hotels in Vegas but not actually stay in them. Sinatra pushed to change these policies. He, Sammy and Dean Martin often peppered their routines with jokes about dagos, jews and blacks sitting in the back of the bus etc. but this served a purpose-to "get it out in the open" and laugh about it when things were still pretty tense and old fashioned, and because Sinatra loved to tease his friends and give them a hard time. But at heart, he was fiercely protective of his friends. In fact, you may not have seen this clip he did back in his younger days in which he addressed racial and religious discrimination-I think he did this because he truly believed in what he was saying.

    Hi Steve! The plane crash that killed Dolly Sinatra, Frank's mother, in '77 departed from that Palm Springs airport. It actually crashed very close by in that mountain range. This is the perfect video to watch on a Memorial Day Weekend as I sit here having Lunch, drinking my coffee, and finishing my Lunch with a very sweet Black-and-White Cookie (Which I shouldn't be eating). Your videos should be played on the news to change this toxic mood. Hi Dave, I have made a couple of videos about Leonardo‘s house on my other channel. My other channel started out as a trip down memory lane channel before I changed it strictly to gravesites. I even was fortunate enough to take a tour of the interior of the house a few years ago. Unfortunately, he doesn’t live there. He just bought the house as an investment and it’s used as a celebrity rental. Anyone could stay there if they can afford the price. It’s basically an Airbnb. I haven’t done a walking tour of that neighborhood yet, just because I’ve done it so many times in the past and shared it already on my other channel crazy times. But I will be taking a walk in that neighborhood in the near future. Thanks again for the reminder. 😎👍
