    My opinion on the point Bo was trying to make: just because you're religious, doesn't automatically make you a good person. Thoughts?

      I think that's a fair way to interpret this song.
      I think that line "But maybe life on Earth could be Heaven. Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try" is the the most important. If instead of doing good things to try to get into an afterlife paradise, we just did good things for the love of one another the world would be a better place. Something like that.

      People don’t need a book or a figure to know how to be a good person. Why make living miserable to get to heaven, when you could be heaven here? There’s a lot he’s saying in this song. But as we know, he’s highly non-religious lol

      Not all religious people are good people. I once heard a preacher say they became religious so they wouldn't go to hell. I think if it takes a threat of eternal banishment to cause people to act better, they weren't good in the first place. Being good without threat of punishment seems more noble, more pure to me.

      I take it as a message to us that instead of focusing on pleasing this vague creator being, that we should work on ourselves so that we can treat everyone with the love that we work to give ourselves, and in doing so we could find "heaven on earth" and become our own source of the "God" that we're looking for. Or something like that 🤷‍♂️

      @@Charsept One of the things that keeps bringing me back to this song, for years and years now, is the harsh truth that we cannot bank on there being a 'Heaven' waiting for us. The world around us needs us *right now* and if we all actually worked toward fixing it instead of having our eyes on a prize that might not actually exist, we might have the Heaven we so desperately want.
      As a former Christian, one of the points that Jesus tried really hard to make was that the Church lives in you... which then got corrupted in the power grab that followed and the 'church' became the external locus of guilt/control that we have now. In the end, IMHO, the truth is that it's up to you to find your own communion with the divine - "The Kingdom of God is within you" is a nice idea and all but the "kingdom," such as it is extends outward through our actions.
      And the idea that God, our 'creator,' might actually have given up on us? Wow. There's not a single person who I've shown this song to who hasn't been floored by that concept. You can actually see that idea click into place on some people and it's pretty wild to watch that thought get parsed in real time.
      Religion aside, I stand by the Golden Rule - "Do only to others what you would have done to you" - and I feel like that really should be the first one that we teach anyone, from day one, and work to reinforce it to any who come after us. It's simple and it works to make us all just a little bit kinder, caring and more compassionate without any of the dogma.

    There's a simple structural difference between 'serious songs' from Bo and Tim: Bo starts funny and then closer to the end he hits you with things to think about (From God's Perspective, Kanye rant, How the World Works) whereas Tim starts seemingly serious and then turns it into a joke (Thank you God, Confessions, Lullaby)

    • @oliverharris60
      @oliverharris60 Рік тому +2

      Absolutely. Tim makes serious points in witty and humorous ways, whereas Bo starts of silly and then hits you with a point that makes you question everything

    I remember seeing this one on a comedy special he did a while back. It is thought provoking.

    Love your Tim reactions and now loving your Bo reactions! So true, I have often thought there is more chance of me meeting an alien than there being a God!! Yes a very Tim like song but still Bo like as well, but the influence is definitely there.
    Btw Tim has dropped a few new performances in the last week's, Confirmation Bias dropped yesterday and is brilliant.

    "The Good Book" by Tim Minchin, and both "Straight White Man" and "Art is Dead" by Bo Burnham.

    I would say the misdirection on the rape thing also reminded me of Tim Minchin's "Predjudice" and the mislead where you're like "oh no, is he really going to say the N-word?"

    I don’t think Bo draws inspiration from Tim. Bo has always had his own ideas and songs. This is definitely not the first “God” type song Bo has done. He grew up in a really religious family and he has talked about that. Sunday rant, gay for Jesus, gods perspective are just a few that fall in that category
