Inland Empire Railfanning Tour Volume 21: Colton Derailment Action!

- Hey I made something that has 20 episodes! In late March a UP yard job derailed on the approach track to the at-grade crossing of BNSF's Cajon Subdivision in Colton, California. From what I was told by a MOW employee there on my second visit, the train lost its brakes and hit a derail, causing significant damage to both the yard track it was moving on and the northwest connector track between CP Gonzales and the Yuma Subdivision. As of a few days ago the last engine, SD40N 1554, was still present, but the other two were removed, presumably scrapped on site as their frames were bent (correct me on this if I'm wrong). This video is split into two parts. I visited the initial crash site back in March and filmed it from the southeast quadrant of the Colton Diamond, and then came back a month later to film the action up close after my partner and I had found out that the derailment was mostly accessible by car! On that afternoon UA-cam user zchesse and I hung out at the crossing for a few hours, and he nicely informed me of a Fakebonnet was leading a Warbonnet and executive MAC on an eastbound BNSF train, so I chased that train up to Verdemont and Devore! Happy watching.

Fist time seeing an BNSF executive livery in Southern California
They're uncommon but definitely get out here from time to time! Ironically my first executive mac was on a UP train at Colton way back in like 2013
I heard that the engineers literally forgot to set the brakes before leaving the engines. It coasted and took a corner too fast.
That's horrible! Checks out from what I've been told.
5:18 to 27:00 is a mood masterpiece.
Thank you so much!!
Union Pacific is Number 1 in Derailment That is so Bad
Yeah it's an absolute mess to see!
Dang, 1554 took a great deal of punishment compared to the others. I hope they can repair those units. Also, nice catch with those 2 warbonnets and executive Mac in one consist! Rare.
Thank you!!
Well done Zachary !
Thanks!!
What happened brother.???
Brakes weren't set properly or gave out and the train hit a derail!
Interesting to see those first pair of bnsf units using that transfer track to the UP sub. I wonder where they were going or were they detouring due to the derailment ?
Oh no those were on the mainline. That was the local power from the San Jacinto Subdivision going back to B Yard.
@@RailfanJunction oh yeah your right. I forgot there's like 2 openings under the diamond. The video angle was zoomed in , great catch .
Wow! I was here at the Pepper Ave. overpass only 6.5 hours after. I wish I would have known about this at the time so I could have came down and seen this. (Here is the video for the day: ua-cam.com/video/JwBxnloimSo/v-deo.html) Also, what is the difference between a Fakebonnet and a Warbonnet? One last question: what camera(s) do you use? Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I use a Canon XHA-1S, and the difference between a warbonnet and fakebonnet is that warbonnets were delivered in Santa Fe lettering while fakebonnet were delivered with BNSF lettering!
@@RailfanJunction Thank you! I had a feeling that was the difference.
Well there wasn’t an earthquake that cause this derailment
Nope! Train lost its brakes
