i've been thinking about this. i think there is something about them that holds them back from more recognition, and i don't think it's anything they are doing wrong. i think their music is a bit dark, bleak, and frankly a lot more simple than a lot of other prog bands out there. FW puts a big emphasis on mood whereas dream theater (one of my favs) is way more whimsical, ear-catching, and virtuosic. fates warning to me is kind of subdued, never flashy. maybe their oldest material was a bit more flamboyant, but not really. i think that because of this, they fly under people's radar easily. fates warning's presence never begs for attention. never stands out. their performances, their videos, their albums, they don't have that a personality that penetrates pop culture in any way. it's as if they are a niche band, for only certain people that want the journey rather than wanting to be impressed. that is why i love them so much. they are absolutely underrated, but i understand why. they are themselves & don't care about impressing anyone, having a single on the radio, or what have you. it's okay to care about that stuff, but it's also okay to not care & not give into the pressure of the music industry.
Frank Aresti is my favorite FW lead axeman: he plays with speed, melody, and feeling, and he's also a great songwriter, it's a shame he isn't in the band anymore; in fact, this was the best lineup, God bless Fates Warning!!! ❤❤😊😊
For those who don't know,Fates Warning are among the pioneers of Prog-Metal.They inspired Petrucci and Portnoy to form Dream Theater. And they're still producing quality albums, like ''Theories of Flight'' and touring.
I don't think they inspired Dream Theater, Rush, Iron Maiden, old fashioned prog bands and such are what inspired them. Nonetheless, both bands are pioneers and front runners of prog metal.
The right man from DT would be Kevin Moore, who played in Perfect Simmettry, as well in Disconected and some other songs also. He formed OSI w/ Matheos, an alternative prog style, something like that
I'm a drummer from back in the day.all my influence on drums were monsters.keith moon.neil peart.mike portnoy.mark zonder.billy cobham.carter Beauford.vinnie coluita.mike mangini.dennis chambers.you put all them together.and you got a bag of dynamite.you should see the look on people's faces when I play.keep jamming guys.
Fates Warning marked my life forever! Ray Alder just about single handedly inspired my vocal work (Along with Tate of course). Fates Warning will always be my all time favorite band (without hesitation).
Denny, I feel the exact same way. I sang for years and years, Ray was my favorite vocalist to cover, I love his tone and his phrasing. My biggest influence also, my band even named our original project "Perfect Symmetry". Yeah, kinda of stalker-like!!
I was like 14 when i first saw this videoclip on a greek rock tv show and although my first purchased album was Images and words because of the hype and advertisement for DT's virtuosity, i always have FW and Alder on my heart for having this unique emotion through his voice which i cannot compare with anyone else except maybe Pain of Salvation. Pleasant shade of grey was my next album and i listen to it once every year since then.

Totally makes sense. "Passion, profession, obsession, performance". What I am is an artist, i love that so much, to create new stuff. I think this aplly to many things in the world.
This album was incredible....Mark Ray Jim Bones... nailed it... people say it sucks ... bullshit...I listened to Fates since it was born...but this lineup....Ioved it...loved everything from the early stuff...
One of the greatest bands ever. I hate they were so underrated and didn't get the respect they deserve. Pretty much invented the prog-metal genre. There wouldn't be a Dream Theater if there hadn't first been a Fates Warning.
I admit that I do not know anything about the band, but I listened to this song playing on SKY channels and I could never stop listening. Perfect! I speak from Brazil: D
All their former and actual members are geniuses in their own right, including Jarzombek and Arch. Just listen to the last Arch/Matheos album, you will find ALL the former and actual members on the tracks, including Zonder. Except Alder (two great vocalists on the same album is a little too much).
Best line up of this long-lived band. Got to see Joe DiBiase back helping out the last time I saw them in Milwaukee. Fantastic to see Mark Zonder and Ray Alder working together again. Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti complement each other like no other guitar duo.
I'm listening to heavy metal since 1989. I like all kinds of metal, except deathcore. The only bands I know that have NEVER released a bad record, is Fates Warning and Death.
LUCAS they really mixed up their musical styles across the first three albums they did with both Alder and Zonder on board, and I love all three. Perfect Symmetry, the minimalistic, bleak progressive metal masterpiece, Parallels, the more radio friendly, polished powerhouse, and Inside Out, returning just a bit to the Perfect Symmetry production. I also love Disconnected. Miss this lineup, but the current lineup with Bobby is excellent, too.
@@theaterdreamer Although I'll agree wth Symmetry IS the masterpiece. Parallels was radio friendly powerhouse that kinda broke it for em. Which was great seein em take off. But I agree that Inside Out is good. It holds no comparison to the other 2. I did NOT know he didn't like the musical direction of the album. But it makes sense to me that he didn't. The edge from the last 2 seemed to be missing. Love Frank! Seein him do a cpl stints on PSOG tour but that was the last I saw of him. Its a shame. Frank n Jim were such an iconic tandem for me. Hate seein those break.
Actually it was more a money problem. They had planned several gigs in US, convicted that they'd even or surpass "Parallells" sucess. But ocurred the oposite thing, many shows cancelled and the guys were frustrated. I read some note that he was a bit upset with the songs, but i think it was a gossip. He wrote "The Strand" track n 3, excelent composition.
This one was the first prog metal song heard so since then I knew that i chose well . After that câme queensryche and dream theater but I m Still listening Fates Warning as my favorite prog metal band then some Pain of Salvation which is probably my second favorite one
I remember encountering the melody of this on a VH1 compilation show (wasn't I Love the 90s) back in the 1999 and the early 2000s. I yearn to know what show/episode it was. Wasn't until 2010+ I finally encountered a Fates Warning song, on the web. I also encountered the Eye to Eye chorus/melody on the same show as well.
FW and Psychotic Waltz are best prog metal bands in late 80ś and early 90´s last century and probably today.Watchtower and Lethal too..but FW and PW are dimension up them all...unique,special.thnx matheos, adler, zonder, aresti and di biase.
Usually I don't agree with favoritism but the fact that Dream Theater are more popular and consider greater and bigger in the prog metal cosmos pisses me off. Fates warning offered so much more..
It's unfortunate that they cut Frank Aresti's solo the way they did. But back then, I guess it was just par for the course. I doubt the guys miss those days, and I don't miss them either.
Why does this have to be more tame than their older stuff? Why couldn't Ray have hit the high notes on this is would have sounded so much better? Because it was 1994 and singing like that went out of style since Parallels? Ray could still churn out the high notes at this point but they are nowhere on Inside Out what a waste! That's the one thing I disliked about Fates Warning they kept moving with the times.
These guys will forever be my favorite band. I'm just sad that they never got the recognition they rightfully deserved.
i've been thinking about this. i think there is something about them that holds them back from more recognition, and i don't think it's anything they are doing wrong. i think their music is a bit dark, bleak, and frankly a lot more simple than a lot of other prog bands out there. Jim Matheos is a musical genius. period
They all are.
Matheos always delivers.
Definitely with the rest of the band
Very much so as well as Ray Adler two forces of nature together.
I totally agree.
Zonder in drums is just amazing.. just stitching everything together
Which ist not an easy job.
Frank Aresti is my favorite FW lead axeman: he plays with speed, melody, and feeling, and he's also a great songwriter, it's a shame he isn't in the band anymore; in fact, this was the best lineup, God bless Fates Warning!!! ❤❤😊😊
Agree, Frank Aresti one of the guitar giants into he metal hard rock stuff, barely known inside metal scene. It's a shame.
For those who don't know,Fates Warning are among the pioneers of Prog-Metal.They inspired Petrucci and Portnoy to form Dream Theater. And they're still producing quality albums, like ''Theories of Flight'' and touring.
That´s true. Fates Warning keeps rocking while Dream Theater became boring after some time.
Sa them live lately, they still bring it.
Yeah but their new albums are a snoozefest, and they used to be my favourite band. I didn't even bother listening to The Astonishing in it's entirety
He formed OSI w/ Matheos, an alternative prog style, something like that
Zonder.
One of my favorite human beings. And drummers.
They are legends. All of them.
Yeah, Mark's pretty amazing!
Very humble and prodigious man.
💯 percent correct

Denny Anthony Agree....amazing artists here...masterful compositions. Pure genius.
Denny Anthony
No question.
Feel the same.
Vocal lines are great!! Ray alder is amazing singer!!
Monument
There's a blind desire there's a drive
There's a need to leave some lasting feat
Something to hold, something to keep
A monument to complete
There's a written page there's a book
There's a search for something to say
Something to share, something to speak
A monument to convey
Is it fiction, is it confession..
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just an obsession
There's a photograph there's a frame
There's a time, a moment to confine
Something to save, something to see
A monument to enshrine
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it passion or just an obsession
There's an empty room there's a blank page
There's a picture left incomplete
Something is lost, something remains
A monument to defeat
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just an obsession
Paul Korver thank you for posting the lyrics. .... amazing! this is Matheos telling what it feels to deal with existing as an artist....
You're welcome
Totally makes sense. "Passion, profession, obsession, performance". What I am is an artist, i love that so much, to create new stuff. I think this aplly to many things in the world.

One of the main reasons that I love Prog Metal so much!
Do You know other bands of Progressive Heavy Metal except Fates Warning and Queensryche?
This song is the definition of progressive metal.
indeed!!!
Perfect
Love this band, So underrated, Top Notch music and musicians
I cannot understand how there's people that criticize this prog metal genius, many bands inspired by FW.
MARK ZONDER!!!!!!!THANKS MAN FOR ALL...............
This song is Absolutely awesome!! I adore the first solo by Frank Aresti!! What a Band!!
best band ever, they are to me like for others the Beatles or the Stones!
DasCabinetofficial Only Fates is amazing....
This song brings back monumental amount of memories
Great, Great, Great Band.
One of our main influences.
And who are you? 😂.. (exactly)
This line up is perfect!!!!!!!!
Great album, fantastic a master piece underrated I got this CD in 94 in CA good memories
Great tune, especially that bass line
Been Rocking Fates for decades! They are one of the finest PROG bands to ever assemble! Criminally under rated!!!!
Its been 23 years already!!
I love this band so much!
I admit that I do not know anything about the band, but I listened to this song playing on SKY channels and I could never stop listening. Perfect! I speak from Brazil: D
I keep listening, and I already know the band hahha
Jim loves those grey shirts eh. I must say it' a pretty pleasant shade of grey
Such a melodic song and the chords are right on. Not easy at all.
Fates warning always and forever
most underated band of all times.
NEVER stop to amaze me.
Cutting that Frank Aresti solo short ought be illegal :-), still Love this video!!
Who said that progressive metal lacks emotion? Not only it has, but it is full of it.
No better drummer than Mark Zonder ever
I'll drink to that!
Cheers!
Monstrous player.
All their former and actual members are geniuses in their own right, including Jarzombek and Arch. Just listen to the last Arch/Matheos album, you will find ALL the former and actual members on the tracks, including Zonder. Except Alder (two great vocalists on the same album is a little too much).
best drum prog part of ever!!!!!!
Love the Rush type composition in the beginning...
How I'd love a new album with this remarkable line up... please Metal Blade, push Jim to bring back FW in studio
Frank's such a badass
Best line up of this long-lived band. Got to see Joe DiBiase back helping out the last time I saw them in Milwaukee. Fantastic to see Mark Zonder and Ray Alder working together again. Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti complement each other like no other guitar duo.
And they cut out half of Frank and Jim's solos out. Listen to the album version.
I didn't know these guys were still around. Never really got into this band but this is actually really good.
They are on tour right now in Europe and are still releasing albums.
Check Their latest album, it's pretty good
Check out their new release "Theories of Flight" it's fantastic!!
Well, shame on you!
eeeella la progresiva :P
swietny videoclip oraz super piosenka oraz wspanialy zespol fates warning
Great band
I'm listening to heavy metal since 1989. I like all kinds of metal, except deathcore.
The only bands I know that have NEVER released a bad record, is Fates Warning and Death.
Love Fates Warning! One of the best bands...ever...
Très content de réécouter ce morceau. Grand groupe.bravo
Love Fates Warning I've been listening to them for 30 years plus❤️
Inside Out is a very underrated album. How the hell Frank Aresti didn´t like its musical direction I don´t know. This song is sublime.
LUCAS they really mixed up their musical styles across the first three albums they did with both Alder and Zonder on board, and I love all three. I treasure people who talks sense on the internet. Thank you!

Many fans hate this album, personally, I like it more than No Exit.
Actually it was more a money problem. They had planned several gigs in US, convicted that they'd even or surpass "Parallells" sucess. AMAZING BAND ❤️🤟
Pure performance and musical excellence!
This is cool.
That's a fuckin epic album
Awesome, will be looking forward to finally seeing them in June.....been a long time coming
genuine.
Zonder is epic!!!
Perfect!!!!!
Short version. Still AMAZING

Monumental banda
My Fave from that album babe!❤
Fates blows Dream Theatre away period.
Much better vocals. Better song writing period.
Usually I don't agree with favoritism but the fact that Dream Theater are more popular and consider greater and bigger in the prog metal cosmos pisses me off. Fates warning offered so much more..
DT is for girls
Queensryche is another Pionner of prog metal
Perfection
Grande pezzo, piu si ascolta piu si assimila la sua piacevolezza e significato
7.5/10
The edits are so jarring!
The masters. The best band of the world. Hail FATES!!!
When Metal "grows up" , it becomes Prog .
It's unfortunate that they cut Frank Aresti's solo the way they did. But back then, I guess it was just par for the course. I doubt the guys miss those days, and I don't miss them either.
Criminally underrated band.
masterpiece
1080p ? 🤔
1994
Music in its purest form.
best Mark zonder 😊🤘
this band has always kicked ass.
I hate the cuts in this video. The solo is amazing, but cut off in several places. Weird editing. Check out the album version.
❤️❤️❤️
