    People should know that the “little cities” she’s describing are actually just neighborhoods within the city of Seattle-we have this thing where our neighborhoods have little downtowns. Tukwila is actually a separate city south of Seattle. Also, the light rail is not the only public transport here, although it’s the fastest and best. We do have a bus system and a lot of the neighborhoods she talked about-Fremont and Ballard specifically-have a lot of really accesible bus lines going through. Ballard especially has the D line, which is an express bus which can get you to downtown faster than driving in rush hour traffic for sure.

    Honestly, I've lived in Maple Leaf / Northgate for 6 years and it's been closer to ideal than I would've thought. 4 bedroom house with 2 garage spots and plenty of free street parking nearby - $2200. No crime, plenty of frequent bus routes to other parts of Seattle (eventually the light rail will be up here). Allowed the roomies and I to save money, and some start-ups to get on their feet. Tukwila would be a last resort for me.

    @Rachel I think your downtown estimates are definitely on the lower side. I just went through a round of apartment hunting and there weren't any apartments below $1700 for a 1bedroom and $2000 for 2bedroom. Parking is generally $150 min. Depends on how much you're willing to go away from downtown I guess! Loved your analysis of the neighborhoods! Very accurate:)

    It's pretty much $2,000+ a month anywhere in Seattle. No matter the bedrooms and size. Only lower when you start headed north or south.

    • @RachelWaldorf
      @RachelWaldorf  5 років тому

      For the most part I think you’re spot on although I’ve lived in two places now in Seattle (Cap Hill & Columbia city) and both have been below that and both have been 2 bedrooms. It’s possible but you got to dig! Studios can range from 1.2k+. Just my opinion. ❤️❤️

  • @Rose-bp1ec
    @Rose-bp1ec 6 років тому +2

    I agree. Your prices are much more tukwilla than cap hill, ballard, fremont, downtown, etc. 1300 gets you about 200 sqft in a micro apartment complex. 1600 gets you more like 430 sqft with laundry and a full kitchen. 2200 is roughly starting rent for a one bedroom... You can sometimes find cheaper in the old less desirable buildings by the freeway, or in less deserable areas.

    • @RachelWaldorf
      @RachelWaldorf  6 років тому +1

      So true. You totally nailed it! By the highway is way cheaper! It’s loud!

    • @Rose-bp1ec
      @Rose-bp1ec 6 років тому

      Ya its also nasty. If you face the highway you get this fine dust in the air through the windows all the time. Thats from the traffic. Without AC, and without being able to open your windows due to highway crud, you will go nuts. The buildings are older, often with questionable management/cleanliness. And homeless congregate by the interstate, esp bridges. I was considering apts near there, but on a second tour the front window would be smashed in, etc. If its cheap, its probably cheap for a reason.

    • @Rose-bp1ec
      @Rose-bp1ec 6 років тому

      Do keep in mind, if you rent from big companies, their prices for units fluctuate daily. Cheaper if you rent them very last minute, or outside of the moving season (summer), but it will increase a lot at the year...

    If any viewers care, its always been called Capitol Hill. No one from Seattle or Washington calls it Cap Hill. If you are youngish and trendy Fremont and Capitol Hill should appeal to you. Everything keeps getting more expensive. She is right though about digging endlessly to find what comparatively more reasonable options (those being generally a bit worn with basically no contemporary amenities) may exist and sharing is a reality if you can deal with that. Keep in mind a lot of people living in Seattle at present are under increasing stress and show it. Tukwilla had the highest crime rate in Washington state last time I saw figures on that. New buildings often seem to want a lot of money at move in. There are empty apartments in several of those as a result as I write this. And the gentrification of recent years remains very controversial in Seattle.

You'll probably be able to find a job easily but finding an dream job with no experiance might be harder but if you have time you should be fine, when my fiancé graduated he took a job that he wasn't thrilled about with the intentions of working it a year to have experience under his belt, when he left for a new job he was getting interviews at places who wouldn't even give him a second chance, but with Microsoft, boeing, Starbucks, amazon, etc seattle has a lot of opportunity

    Thanks for posting this. I do have a question. Is the downtown area of Seattle most likely where people can find the musical acts?

    What annual income do you think would be adequate as a single person?
    I heard nothing below 45k.
    I did a phone interview with a job I would like, and i may be forced to move in a few months. This would be a 2,000 mile move...thank God I could fit my life in a suitcase haha.
    Also curious about taxes...I know here in Illinois I get a little over $700 back for every $1,000 I earn.
    Would love to hear how it transfers to Seattle so i dont come up short for Bills :)

    Is 1,200 really that expensive? I'm in Michigan currently and a nice apartment here is about 1,000. 1,200 seems cheap for a big expensive city. Are there other expenses in Seattle that make it hard to afford?

    I was extremely lucky when I moved up to Seattle in 97, stayed til 2003. Occupancies were always at about 3-5 %. I managed to find a place in a little old brick 3 bedroom house up on Beacon Hill- right by the golf course- my two roommates and I each paid $265 ! I'm sure that little old lady who owned the place is dead by now and someone is renting it out for a small fortune.

      *Rachel Waldorf* Thanks, I lived in Seattle for 5 years in the early 90's, met a girl and moved to MPLS Mn and got stuck. Now I want to move back there but there is way to much homelessness for me to find a place. I used to live at the 801 apartments downtown. I also lived in Capitol Hill. I worked at the Pike Place Market. I have my name on a waiting list for 2 apartments. 1 is in lower Queen Anne a mile from the Space Needle and the other is off Broadway about 6 block from Pike Street with a straight shot to downtown. Seattle. I miss Seattle so much. . . This is a digital oil and airbrush painting I did of Seattle. The original is way bigger than this print. www.madcowmodels.co.uk/images/27032018/tb_21004_489092_1522184102.jpg?lu=1522184104 This is a bit upclose of the same painting www.madcowmodels.co.uk/images/27032018/tb_21004_489094_1522184375.jpg?lu=1522184375

    No offense but I've lived in Seattle for over 20 years. You don't want to live anywhere near the 'seattle' area like u district, capitol hill, ballard, etc. Trust me it's crime ridden and not as safe as you think. In fact I've never been more sketchy situations than when I lived in the U District or U village, it's crazy in that area because of all the drug activity that you might not notice from the outside looking in. Seattle has always had an odd underground of hard drug users etc, but in the last 5 years it's gotten incredibly worse that it's alarming. Ever notice all the homeless, and the RV homeless and the encampments? Those used to not be in this town 10 years ago. I would suggest the eastside, Renton/Kent Fairwood areas. There's tons of work in the Kent valley, and you can live in the surrounding areas for pretty cheap in comparison to the rest of the town. I wouldn't suggest north seattle areas. However, Where ever you go in Seattle, it isn't all that safe, we have the highest property crime rate in the US. I know it's a pretty huge place when you're new to it, but it's actually a very ghetto, drug infested, rat infested, traffic mess anywhere you go in Seattle or surrounding area. However I don't walk around nervous like in some areas of Chicago or LA where you feel like your going to get shot, that's one thing about seattle. People don't really get that violent towards pedestrians as much as other cities.

    • @RachelWaldorf
      @RachelWaldorf  7 років тому

      +Andy S no offense taken! To each their own! I live downtown and I love it! My neighborhood feels safe and I feel with any larger city there’s gonna be crime and drug issues! Even back in the Midwest in Minneapolis and Milwaukee there’s a ton of issues. I totally think it’s an acquired taste ☺️

    Awesome! Thanks for sharing the Facebook page, I'm currently planning on moving to Seattle by the end of summer so I'm really glad you mentioned that. I look for apartments literally every single day, it's really unhealthy, lol. I've also looked into places like Tukwila, Renton, Everett etc. and although they're much cheaper, I think I'd rather take risk and pay more monthly to actually be able to enjoy Seattle completely.
    Also! Padmapper is really awesome for apartment hunting. I've found a handful of studio apartments near downtown Seattle for around $1,100 or less. Another tip, there's this management company called Pinnacle where they show all of their current listings online and you can filter it down to solely apartments in Seattle. pinnacleliving.com/communities/washington-apartments/seattle-apartments-for-rent/
