If we don’t like or believe his performance then everything leading to it seems less important. It’s about the ride, not the end, but the end justifies the ride. And there has to be something to the fact it takes a long time to set up a shot, so why would they listen to him talking about a retake if they can see it’s enough.

You can tell sometimes that Clint goes with the first take. I think he's more interested in telling the story than making sure every scene is perfect. You gotta look at Clint's career. He got his start doing those spaghetti westerns. They weren't real big on perfection. It was about the story. Rawhide, same. Then when he started doing big movies under big time directors he probably thought, "damn these guys waste a lot of time."

Having directed a couple of feature films you now and then get people that try and tell you your job. Since you have already prepared, and know more what you need than anyone else on set, you have to be strong and tell them no. There is no time to explain everything so they catch up to your level of knowledge of what was needed in a scene.

Can confirm, I was an extra on some of Eastwood's movies and they were the shortest days I ever worked... Which kinda sucked for the extras because we got overtime for the day after 8 hours, but more times than not we only spent about six or seven hours on set. There were a few days when we did some driving that were longer, but even those were done quicker than most.
