A nice hack if you need to store activator for a time is to disconnect the wire feed on your welder and blow your MIG gas into the can to displace the oxygen. Oxygen is the enemy and having nothing but inert gas in the can is a nice safety factor to combat the chemicals from degrading.
I appreciate your desire to mimic the factory bead. I think a bead roller will be one of the first pieces of equipment I buy when I get a bigger shop (whenever that day is).
Thanks, the desire is there, and we'll see how many tries it takes to achieve it!
Looks good all in one color Dan. I have also been working with quarts of epoxy for the same reason. I bet the fresh product solves the issue.
Thanks Russ. I'll be sticking with a quart or two at a time moving forward. I can't wait to try out a fresh quart. This has been bothering me since I primed my doors.
It can also happen when a layer sprayed has not completely dried before another is applied called solvent pop
typically, epoxy products only have a shelf life of up to one year... So you're probably right, that stuff was just too old. Considering, it still looks like it's gonna do it's job.
Thanks for the info. I'll definitely be sticking to one year from here on out. I think it will be fine. It's taking longer to dry to the touch and I'm assuming it will take longer than normal to cure as well. I'll check it in a few days.
@@RestoCar Yessir, when epoxy gets too old, it will also affect drying times. I'm sure it'll be fine. Like you said, the epoxy will just take longer to cure. If it takes too long, maybe hit the tacky areas with a heat lamp. If the epoxy doesn't fully cure, you'll have to remove those sections. Otherwise, any new epoxy you try to put over it won't stick right.
It looks like dirty coolant coming out of that activator container. I kind of had an issue like that last year with some old Eastwood chassis black. I never got a chance to paint anything else with that paint so I'm not sure if it was just it being old or improper gun settings on my part. Guess I'll find out at some point this spring.
That's a good comparison. I'm hoping the fresh quart resolves my issue. I'll let you know how it goes.
Looks great! Are you going to use a sound deadener also?
Thanks! I'm going to apply some lizard skin after I get the tunnel and underside done.
What brand is that 90°? I bought a husky from home depot back in 2013 and its still going strong.i I stay away from Harbor freight pneumatic tools. Never had any luck with them
I'm not sure. It says "Air Tools" on the side, but I can't find a brand named "Air Tools" anywhere. I picked it up at a swap meet many years ago. I did pick up a harbor freight die grinder while I was waiting for my replacement to show up. While it gets the job done, it's a lot louder and vibrates more than what I had. I ordered a CP875 thinking it was a rear exhaust and it ended up being a front exhaust so I'm still looking, though the CP875 is a nice tool. I'll have to check out the huskies.
@@RestoCar ive seen those red air tools sold buy the tool guy that seems to be at every major swap meet I go to.
Bummer on the epoxy issue..... looks great though. I've had some PPG DP90 on the shelf for a couple of years (that was opened), hopefully I won't have any issues....
It's all good. The primer is finally about dry to the touch so it should all work out. Hopefully yours is good for the next project.
Thats a lot of work to have go funny. Hope it will not contaminate the next layer and throw it off too.
For sure, hopefully it all works out. I'm ready to move on to another area of the car!
Low VOC epoxy isnt always the best choice on a area like that. I have used that same paint on a just blasted shell and its been fine. It is very sensitive to any kind of oil on a surface. I would have used fast etch first. Omni ( ppg) makes an acceptable primer for floors and undersides in black. I also use the DP74LF for red oxide. You car was Dipped in a Red oxide primer tank when built. Looks great though,l keep up the good work!
Thanks! Good info on the primers, I'll have to do some research on the topic.
