  • Have you ever seen a dragon and wondered who the weakest of their kin is? The ones that can be found at the northern most peaks and icy caves? The ones who are the thugs of dragon kind? Come and sit by me a moment as I tell you the tale of these dragons.

So my first campaign was in Icewind Dale and, during the campaign, my character ended up befriending the local ancient white dragon. This was basically because my character not only helped them remove a storm trapping them in their lair, but also offered them magical items they thought would appeal to the dragon, offered also to craft any potions the dragon requested, and lastly, amused the dragon with a question. Namely “do you have any advice regarding caring for kobolds.” I had my character explain that they had offered to take in some kobolds (start of adventure) which had fixed up and maintained the inn the party owned. But by the time they met the ancient white dragon, the kobolds now number at 20 and were still increasing. This, the dm, so amused the ancient white dragon that they offered to take in some of the kobolds but also did provide advice. In exchange, my character, with the help of their arch mage allies, crafted a “room” near the town where the dragon was welcome to visit if they pleased. Given my character was an elf, the epilogue had the two be friends for the entirety of my character’s life and the kobolds did indeed expand. The white dragon also kept her promise to help erase the name of the winter goddess of the region so her power could never have as strong a hold as it once was, even teaching her children to do the same. The dm also said that at least one of the offspring was named for my character. While it wasn’t conventional, my character had befriended the dragon and had even gone on later hunts with her (ranger) and keeping her company and bringing interesting treasure and stories of how they were acquired to the dragon. So, it was a good thing if unusual and that was made clear. I believe I also put in the epilogue that my character did will the inn to the kobolds and brought tasked the kobolds with bringing whatever treasure was left my character had to the dragon to add to her hoard as a thanks for the friendship. Considering this dragon in the module is mentioned as being lonely, I think I did well in crafting a good gift for my character’s dragon friend. They would have a town to call their own with many generations of people there who would keep them company if they wished it, they had kobolds aplenty, and my character’s heroic reputation would likely live on for a very long time given they fought and drove off the goddess of winter. The white dragon would no longer be lonely so long as she wished for company. I did play an elf, a drow and young at that, which is why my character long outlived their party and had this long relationship with the dragon and was trusted to help her defend her later eggs and offspring. I believe the dm basically said my character was now considered a rare acquisition to the white dragon’s hoard. In fact, was told that the town honored the wishes of the dragon and allowed my character’s body to be taken by her and frozen in her lair for all time as their burial site. And that’s how we wrapped up the epilogue of that campaign which I’m very happy about. My first character and first campaign and I adore and treasure that epilogue. Considering my own character’s initial design was around having social anxiety, that they ended the campaign with a friend for the entirety of their life is fitting. Anyway! Just figured I would share, especially for anyone else reading who might wish to use it for inspiration for their games. Thanks for the lore!

1:11 I mean, to be fair, the average humanoid is stupid. I mean, have you met those wretched creatures?
That's why I make my adventure hoard only of more than average ones.
