I live out here in Scottsdale AZ and have to say I have seen people here on the streets doing more stupid shit on the road than I have seen WAYMO do. For the most part they drive well.
I honestly hate to pull the "I'm a Navy veteran" card, but Quartermaster was one of the original rates within the Navy along with Gunner's Mate. Gunner's Mate, as the name suggests was in charge of the guns, including small arms and large cannons. Quartermasters were in charge of day to day operations such as below deck cleanliness, go-for for the captain, and navigation. In the modern Navy Quartermasters solely are in charge of navigation, and the Gunner's Mate's responsibilities have remained the same.
Hate to pull the Army veteran card but from Britannica: quartermaster, officer who superintends arrangements for the quartering and movement of troops. In Europe the office dates back at least to the 15th century. During the late 17th century, when the minister of war of King Louis XIV of France reorganized the army, he created a quartermaster general's department that dotted the countryside with strategically located and defended magazines of food, forage, ammunition, and equipment. It can mean multiple things.
I had a Subaru Impreza loaner and having to disable ADAS systems everytime I started it was INSANELY FRUSTRATING. The braking alerts were driving me nuts in bumper to bumper traffic. In order to stay close enough to the car in front to not get cut off by late mergers you have to stay pretty close and it beeps even if you're going like 1MPH.
You should check out Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott's Waymo Podcast Episode. They also had a second car lead/follow to "mess with it" and try some stuff.
I’ve owned one, granted I didn’t buy it new, but I mean hey it’s a form of brand advertising right? Anyway, the point of that is to say I also hate what they’re doing. Freaking out is a little strong I feel however.
Look at all the modern BMW memes, but people are buying the cars as most are not cross shopping it with an E36 track rat. JLR are £1.2b in profit and like many sub brands with a juicy earner diversification is better than dilution. Look at any French car adverts and it's not unique, but they did miss having a product at the end.
Lane keep assist is first on the list. Unless you like being ping ponged between the lanes. Blind spot detection is the only useful one. The emergency braking is good in theory but it can bug out and cause heavy braking for no reason.
@Bob_Smith19 the only car I've driven with it is my corolla and it doesn't bother me at all. I don't usually run the lane centering mode unless I've got to sneeze or something, but that's a standalone button on the wheel. Are other brands lane departure especially annoying? Mine only triggers when i forget to signal a lane change or something.
The no adaptive cruise in the manual CT5V Blackwing is a real miss. Pretty much make it so people with traffic can’t buy it… and change from a 2 car solution to a 1 car solution.
1:29:40 man i couldn't disagree more with this take. The 12c is still top3 best looking McLarens to me. Not too aggressive, but unquestionably exotic. The 570 looks or a toy in comparison, and it sounds worse.
I own a 911, but I’m not buying another Porsche. For a truck I have an F150 and my commuter is an I3. Multi vehicle owner but very different use cases for each. So I can see why Porsche is low on repeat customers. Kia and Hyundai are usually single vehicle buyers and replace every 4-7 years.
@ True and cater to the people who don’t put much effort into maintaining their vehicles so they get pretty trashed in 6-10 years and sent to the scrap yard, It makes sense.
I have a question for both of you and your community, when it comes to Dictator’s like Assad and the Sultan of Brunei, where they have notable car collection, should their car collections be crushed/disposed of? Or because some or most are very rare/limited/one off coach built that they should be preserved whether it’s through private sale or put into a museum? Personally, I’m conflicted on what would be the right decision.
You can't have different people driving to different standards with regards to speed limits especially. One of the most dangerous things on the road is the difference of speeds between cars... it only sets up problems. I think anywhere in the world people driving cars with high power to weight ratio should have to undergo special training to show they can handle the car... just like Pilots have to have a license to handle certain classes of plane. I mentioned last blog you guys did... with the SOUTH AUSTRALIA government targeting driving of those cars who only have higher power to weight ratio, it's going to affect very few and thus cannot be seen as revenue raising. Plus, the FACT it is written in the blood of SOPHIE NAISMITH, the girl who dies at the hands of an idiotic Lambo driver who didn't know how to handle the power, and is known as SOPHIE'S LAW, is all we need to understand about it's reason for being. There is NO controversy here... just common sense. In Australia, more so than is in America, we view being part of a society as a RESPONSIBILITY and we understand why certain things are law. Americans seem to jump up and down about RIGHTS, with little regard to responsibilities. It's why a lot of Americans come to our shores to live, because the law makes more sense in Australia than it does in America... Seriously... America has just allowed a convicted felon to run for President, and then collectively decided he was a better choice to lead the country than the Attorney...! That sort of shows America doesn't understand what law actually is and why there must be rules for society... applied EVENLY and FAIRLY to all people, and SENSIBLY to try and achieve the goals.
I'm sorry but GPS by definition uses satellites for positioning. I understand the problem with 4G navigation but I'm pretty sure you describe it wrong. Having no offline maps is different than having no satellite positioning. Just like your phone can and will do positioning even without 4g connection, but you must have pre-loaded offline maps e.g in Google maps for the positioning to be helpful for you. Otherwise it's a dot in the desert
With new tires aren't you supposed to run them in gently for the first hundred or so miles before you go nuts? I'm not surprised brand new and less grippy tires had issues. But I thought you had to sort of break them in if for no other reason just to get all the greasy byproducts of manufacturing off the rubber.
I have to disagree with the opinion that Emergency Braking is always good. Last Friday I was driving in heavy stop and go traffic on I880 in Oakland. Traffic picked up to about 50mph then stopped. I was on a calculated path to stop 3-4 feet behind the car I was following. Then the EB system kicked in and stopped my car(Subaru Forester) 15 feet away. I was immediately rewarded by getting hit from behind.
i hear voices in my head speaking that its a machine or computer sophisticated thing of technology that's that type of abuse that's hurting my body and giving me bad dreams, but i think its just possibly just use of a violent kind of thing that's important to what could happen to my feelings making a planet of maybe body sickness or hurt that's connected using probably a single or i think two brains. i struggle with the voices and also that cell deleted head pain every day and night. i don't know how you get out of it. make it stop please
Jaguar are aiming at a completely different market... and they will alienate their previous buyers. People like Harry Metcalf... won't be buying the new offering that is for sure. Porsche going water cooled was not the same, and then making SUV didn't mean they dropped their previous model style and target market. Porsche expanded their market and everyone knew the days of the air cooled was coming to a close. Jaguar are trying to leave one market, and hit a different market... I don;t think they will be successful. There are already new Jag EV's out there on the road testing with all the funky camouflage.... they don't appear to look as bad as the concept.
It is more of a Harley Davidson moment with their marketing. They have leaned into the 70s era and now even if it was a decent product, like the live wire was. The pushback is hard as the image is so married to the past. To be fair the advert was not crazy, any French car has similar themes. Plus BMW melted the memes with their new look and people are buying them, rather than trading in their E30 M3 on a new iX
