+1 for used EV content. Just picked up an ev9 on a 2 year lease and since I've been looking at used EVs to replace my S7. That brings up the seatbelt comment. I've always worn one but managed to not have an accident for over 30 years of driving. Last month I t boned a unlicensed , weed smoking, driver who crossed the highway directly in front of me, wrecking my beloved S7. No airbags. No injuries besides a sore shoulder and neck. All because I was belted and alert. Could never imagine not having one, since I was able to see my family that night.
Not quite when it comes to Rivian. They're one of the two companies that actually release OTA updates. So they actually move and modify buttons. In the last update they actually added a functionality for the vent position to be set for different driver profiles my wife likes hers pointed away from her mine I like towards me the car just adjust that automatically. Didn't do that when I first got it. They've added entire drive modes. New climate functions as well like dog mode. Everyone else who isn't doing OTA really could have physical buttons but I'll give Tesla and Rivian possibly even Lucid a pass cause the buttons are moving all the time.
Adding everything to touchscreens is more expensive, the actual car controls etc. keeping it both touch and buttons is most expensive. Keeping it only buttons and no touchscreen is cheaper. And the cars they usually discuss, ie, greater than 50k, it's a non material cost. Yes they should give buttons, ON THE STEERING WHEEL, and 1-2 dials/ switches for basic ac. Everything else should be touch.the touch menus should be simple.
’22 WRX to ’24 GR Corolla: Having an actual knob for temperature control makes a huge difference, especially when paired with physical switches for features like heated seats. In the WRX, my wife and I often had to wait to access these controls, whereas in the GR Corolla, everything is easily accessible.
I love the Taycan plan. Please do it! I also love the idea for the 1000th episode! It would be epic with the list of regulars that you have had on the show. 12 hours of Scotto, Vin, Lieberman, Cammisa, DeMuro. Other UA-camrs would be a bonus, Throttle House, Savage Geese, Engineering Explained, Everyday Driver, Regular Car Reviews, Out of Spec Reviews. Hope you guys will run with this plan and people will be available.
135k miles on Model 3 now and it's only seen Costco for tires. Buy one when they get cheap enough, you'll love it. Also when buying used, look for a 980 motor becuase you can ghost it up 150hp.
Maintenance of high end EVs scares a lot of people off of them. A Taycan might not have battery issues but brakes, suspension, and tires are probably still very pricey.
Exactly, and most EVs are not single ECU (software defined vehicle) so they still have separate ECUs for every sub system. A family member has spend thousands on fixing a Merc hybrid from 2017 and it’s been random electronic issues, screens dying, battery heater dying…. Etc
I have driven a 1964 VW bus. In that, *you* are the crumple zone. I cannot imagine anything that is less safe, and yet it is perfectly legal, and not inexpensive if properly restored. Speaking of old Volkswagens and accidents, and interjecting a comment about the seatbelt discussion, one of my closest friends was saved from near certain death by *not* wearing a seatbelt. Her '64 bug slid off the road in the mountains, hit a rock 15 or so feet down and my friend was thrown from the car. It landed a few dozen more feet down the mountain, upside down on its roof, which was crushed flat to the top of the doors. She would've been killed had she still been in that car. Miraculously, she always wore her seatbelt but because of circumstances she happened to not be that one time. Of course, not being an idiot, she still wears her seatbelt.
For kei Trucks and Japanese import trucks in general, I'll point one thing out: For 20k, you could either have a no door, bike-engine-powered ATV/UTV, or buy two or more kei trucks that could haul more, have a fully closed cabin, and maybe some luxury item like a flip bed or air-con. If you own a big field and need something that drives around and does work, which one sounds more attractive to you?
Having lived in NZ where there is no scene tax on Kei trucks or Japanese imports. These are just looked at from a utility perspective. Hit the brakes in a 660cc Suzuki Carry with 2 large Gaijin and the rear wheels lift. You are the crumple zone in them too, but they will do the speed limit and you wear it rather than drive it. Would I call a UTV a better option? Well it's not designed for the road either, plastic doors and steel in a roll over is like being in a garden shed in a crash with another car. I think the American view of these are driven by the fact you can't buy them rather than if they sold these at a car dealership.
As a true car enthusiast I’m so tempted to buy a used ev right now, the price and the fact you can charge at home is unbeatable. And if you have a cheaper sports car like a Miata on the side you really aren’t missing out on anything!
In reference to the Seat belt topic. We need to remember that both Princess Diana and Dodi died in a Mercedes Benz because they weren't wearing a seat belt. The front passenger lived because he did wear his seat belt.
@@pond.3509 Honest question how do you think they died? I did a paper for my Masters on the accident and that was my conclusion. If they wore their seat belt they would have survived.
@@dcfan40I worked at Mercedes when that happened. They recovered the car after the accident eventually after the investigation. Remember the W140 was the gold standard of safety, fatal and non fatal car accidents within the Bundesländers are recovered to the factory for real world analysis. They went full CSI on every part of the car, even buying back the cars around it on the production line to cross reference metallurgy. It was a hold my Jäger moment for some in that team.
At what point (I think we're already there)... why is it illegal to use you phone... versus, a screen that requires you to use to change the air conditioning, needing you to take your eyes off the road longer than it takes to write a text message...
I'm just coming back to give Matt credit for the joke about the Maserati being the official car of LA side pieces, mistresses, sugar babies. Good line and has stuck in my brain.
+1 for used Taycan content. I think it’s useful for those of us who can’t afford the full “new car” price, but the depreciated value is one that becomes obtainable.
Out of warranty EV battery replacement scares me. I also wonder how hard it will be to find a shop to work on the car if it needs something I cant do myself.
In reference to the discussion about touch screens, I think an infotainment should be reviewed specifically with respect its ease of use with the vehicle being in motion. As a Mazda 3 owner, the rotary dial and its tactility I believe is vastly superior to any touch screen experience simply because I spend less time needing to look at the screen to perform whatever function I'm trying to do. Show me a touch screen you use without looking at it or at the very least operate in your peripheral vison.
Used EV content for a Taycan that's only 2-3 years old might not be that interesting--yet. It should drive pretty much like new and not have any issues. The only thing to report on that you haven't explored in a review already would be the price tag. 6 to 10 years old with over 100k miles becomes a more compelling view--but we're not there yet with any interesting luxury EV worth daily driving.
Zach, if you read this. Get the carbon intake, it is so worth the effort. there is a stop gap though, which doesn't require a switch to MAF and ECU flash. eventuri make a intake which i believe is bolt on. I a e46 m3 with one, and it was 70% or so of the way there. which is far better than stock
to expand on the idea of the used Taycan, I think it would be interesting to test the battery life when you buy it then 1-2 years later when you sell it to see how much the battery has degraded.
+1 for used Taycan content. I bought a used Model 3 next year; please don’t tell Matt. Very interested in more used EV content. Would love to buy a used Taycan next.
Suggestions for a lineup of folks for pod #1000: 1. Lieberman 2. Camisa 3. Spinelli 4. Ferretti 5. Scotto 6. Doug 7. Thaddeus 8. Vinny 9. Your Dad either opening or closing up the show.
The R&T experiences are shockingly expensive for what they are. I'm someone who does Rally's with friends and also joins a big Porsche one annually and this one is so much $$$. I attend DE's at COTA and know it's cost as well. Hard to see how 3 hotel nights, ~10 meals and one COTA track day cost $11k. I guess someone has to pay for the R&T people's time, travel and cars. Good for them building events people will pay for though.
Thumbs up for the used Taycan. I bought my 2nd two year old EV in a row in 2023. I highly recommend it, especially if the battery is still under warranty but I'm honestly not worried about the longevity of the battery.
Im pretty sure that Tyler sold his Diablo awhile ago too. It was in the shop alot and he (and Wizard) kept having issues with getting parts for it. It was out of action a few months at a time while they waited for stuff.
Zack. I own a 2002 M3 and had my rod bearings done a few years back and I would HIGHLY advise you get yours done. Mine were well worn! You throw a rod and your M is a paper weight.
Ball watches (I know they're kind of a meme brand for train nerds but still) has a new automatic timer movement. Not sure if it's accurate enough for cooking but it might be worth calling them up to make the suggestion. I love the idea of a chef watch.
Do the taycan! A couple reasons. 1 - I can tell you want to Matt, 2 - I am NOT AT ALL an EV guy, I think like a lot of your listeners, but the Taycan I can get behind just because it looks so damn good! , 3 - Can't you lease a used car? Not sure how favorable it would be but might be the best option for the few year old used EV scenario...
FWIW, I’m a regular dude from Houston who daily’s a ‘14 Mazda3, have a ‘00 CRV to move stuff around and an ‘18 ZL1 1LE for track duty. Taycan is the ONLY used EV I’d genuinely consider to purchase. I’d watch the videos y’all would put out on Taycan. Keep up the good work boys
I'm playing the "used ev" experiment with a used Mach-e. Three years old with 30k miles = purchase price of more than half off of original MSRP. Zero warranty besides the manufacturer's power train warranty. All is well six months in.
what about the very tactile wheels they are going to put on the R2/3 steering wheel? that is supposed to feel really nice and interact with the software in a dynamic ps5 controller feedback sort of way.
I’ve had a Giulia Ti since new and it’s out of warranty and has 60k miles and is my daily. I have other cars I drive as well. But am I crazy for wanting to see if I can stuff a naturally aspirated Maserati 4.2 V8 in to it?
Yes to used EV content. I'm genuinely considering a used RS e-tron GT or a Polestar 2. The Polestar 2 is such a great car and a used one is basically worthless. Probably my next car.
As some one who has rented and owns new-ish cars, here's a summary of my experience: - 23 Lexus IS350 (owned) - swipe temp controls, physical HVAC. Screen is a million miles away and tiny. Overall opinion: Meh. It's okay. Thank goodness more isn't in the screen because it's unusable. Seems like it was tacked on after the fact. - 24 Tundra (owned) - physical touch HVAC, huge screen for everything else. I detest the buttons. They are all the same and are far enough away to be inconvenient. I would rather have HVAC in the screen, and a bunch of other things in the screen. But the screen is very nice and enjoyable. - 18 Tesla Model 3 - rented from Turo, oops-all-screen. I rather enjoyed the HVAC in the screen. Heated seat controls were mid, but the software (remembering the setting vehicle on/off) made up for it - 98 M3 (owned) - hvac buttons, but loads. Too many and too small to manage. Buttons are plasticy too, feels terrible. - 22 WRX (Turo'd) - tablet interface was decent. Buttons for up/down temperature control is functional. Overall, I believe touch screens are fine if the software does the legwork to enable not having to touch it regularly.
Concerning used EV content, we come to you because you and Zac are automotive journalists. Journalists > influencer. That said, there are quite a few EV channels and influencers on youtube...some specialize in EV content. Also, the smoking tire tire consumers are majority petrol...you have talked about how EV vehicles don't command what ICE vehicles command on the channel
Very interested in used Taycan content. Currently own a 2019 e-tron which I’m pretty happy with, except for its size, and am considering a used Taycan Cross Turismo as a replacement down the road. The e-tron has had issues, but Audi has extended the warranty on the major electrical systems and the local Audi dealer has been great. I’d like to see how Porsche compares in that regard when the Taycan needs servicing. Thanks!
Yes to the Tycan! I’m on my second used EV rn. I had a leaf for 7 years (bought for 12k and sold for 6k) and now I have a ‘22 ioniq5 SEL that I bought for 30k with 18k miles.
I rented a Lucid Air GT on Turo for cheap as hell for a week and I loved it. I'd love to see that sort of thing with either an Air or a Taycan, since those are probably the 2 EVs that I think about the most
20 years ago had a road trip with a dozen car friends on a similar Norcal loop from Truckee up to Highway 36 back down to Fort Bragg. Pretty epic drive.
I have a weekend 718 cayman GTS 4.0 manual and daily model 3 rear wheel drive. Been so curious about changing to taycan for my Tesla, seems like a deal. Very curious to see.
I’m living the Taycan experiment. I bought a 2022 Taycan 4S Cross Turismo a year ago and planning to extend the warranty for the whole 15 years, or as long as Porsche’s extended warranty arm stays solvent. I’d watch the content, but I think I’d be more curious about a used Lucid Air
As a used Tesla model 3 owner, I want to see used Taycan content. Make it happen good sir. I expect "I bought the Cheapest Taycan in the USA" in my feed 😂
Im in the market for an R1S soon and yeah, the biggest downside ill have to deal with is the lack of buttons. In my pov, if i could have climate controls, vents, volume and next track as buttons and everything else in the screen would be perfect.
I’d be very interested in the Taycan experiment. I’m probably 2 years from getting another car, currently in Law School, but likely my commute at that point will be 30-40 minutes a day. A used EV might be the solution at that point. Personally not for or against them but I prefer involving cars when not fighting traffic but would rather not put empty miles on my other cars. 997 X51 and e39 540 6sp Ind
I'm curious about used EV's in general - but can't see myself buying one for a while. I plan to drive my 05 VW Jetta for many more years. Haha. Wife has a 2012 Honda Pilot that I would consider selling one day for a used EV if it makes sense. All that tech scares me - how do you maintain these old batteries, how long do they last?
A late 5th gen QP S or GTS is a nice Maserati with a proper engine. despite random plastic pieces being sticky or breaking off in the interior. No used EVs for me, 2013 GTi daily with 5k oil changes till it dies.
Matt, MINI SE ev! They’re like 15k used with 20k miles and 6 years of warranty left! Yes the mileage is low, but its enough for city driving. Gotta practice what you preach about not living in crazy exess (same argument against masssssive evs being too much)
One the digital vent comment I can't stress how annoying it is. I have a 971.2 Panamera GTS estate. Love it to bits. The only thing that drives me nuts is needing to use a menu to change JUST the center console mid level vent. And it's more infuriating because the other other vents are all manual and have these lovely finishes on the piece you actually touch. The weight, cost, and complexity that could have been saved for a gimmick.
In the market for an EV daily driver in the same price range as yourself. I’ve also thought about a used Taycan and would definitely be watching your experiment closely!
Taycan content to your audience will probably be better received than Taycan content on OOS. Being a viewer of both they are very different audiences. For some reason or another I find peoples personal cars very interesting and would watch every minute of the taycan series or of which ever car you get. Base RWD is the way to go!
This is how automated climate control works, my '68 Eldorado has vacuum actuated HVAC flaps instead of motors. Same principles, hot coolant, cold a/c, X outside air temperature, Y temperature inside, fan speed capacity, a/c capacity and a map of how to get there. If you want to retrofit an HVAC you need the condenser/pump/fan to match the ECU of the unit. So it knows when and how much to turn on the a/c pump or recirculate. The actual pipes/ outlets can go anywhere.
Yes to used Taycan content and used EV content more generally. I'm personally looking at used EVs in the $25K-$35K range - e-tron, I-Pace, XC40 and Ariya.
+1 for Taycan content. I'm very interested in the used EV market. Prices, tax credits, and availability get more attractive every day.

From what I understand you don't get a tax credit buying it used unless it's under $25000. I am definitely interested in seeing how a used taycan experience is because in another year once they are even cheaper I'd definitely buy one.

@@aussie2uGA 135k! Wow! Would definitely love to have one as a daily. Thanks for the insight.
@@abh2188you drove a rental car. That car would’ve had a much harder life than a normal a normal Plaid
New Hampshire is the only state without a seat belt law, state motto is “Live Free or Die”
... Lol
That’s my motto too. Anything less is unamerican
They also allow you to not wear a motorcycle helmet
Maintenance of high end EVs scares a lot of people off of them. A Taycan might not have battery issues but brakes, suspension, and tires are probably still very pricey.
Exactly, and most EVs are not single ECU (software defined vehicle) so they still have separate ECUs for every sub system.
A family member has spend thousands on fixing a Merc hybrid from 2017 and it’s been random electronic issues, screens dying, battery heater dying…. Etc
19:50 Matt goes: "a girl I dated in high school..." and they place the ad for North VPN!! 😅 pretty good podcaast edit
I'm in favor of the used Taycan experiment.
As a true car enthusiast I’m so tempted to buy a used ev right now, the price and the fact you can charge at home is unbeatable. And if you have a cheaper sports car like a Miata on the side you really aren’t missing out on anything!
Couldn’t agree more! Perfect affordable garage combo
In reference to the Seat belt topic. We need to remember that both Princess Diana and Dodi died in a Mercedes Benz because they weren't wearing a seat belt. The front passenger lived because he did wear his seat belt.
Yeah...that's why they died lol
@@pond.3509 Honest question how do you think they died? I did a paper for my Masters on the accident and that was my conclusion. If they wore their seat belt they would have survived.
@@dcfan40is that a thing ? What was the subject ?
@@dcfan40I worked at Mercedes when that happened. They recovered the car after the accident eventually after the investigation. Remember the W140 was the gold standard of safety, fatal and non fatal car accidents within the Bundesländers are recovered to the factory for real world analysis. They went full CSI on every part of the car, even buying back the cars around it on the production line to cross reference metallurgy. It was a hold my Jäger moment for some in that team.
Doug and Jason absolutely need it be on the same pod if that could happen at all that’s be great. Along with others ofc
Matt you have got me wanting to replace my daily commuter with a used Taycan so that content would be perfect. You got my vote for that.
I bought a used Leaf and have been loving it. It's my little commuter shitbox. But has heated seats and carplay.
Why not just get a used lc500 as a daily?
to expand on the idea of the used Taycan, I think it would be interesting to test the battery life when you buy it then 1-2 years later when you sell it to see how much the battery has degraded.
Can we vote to get Matt to buy a 2 year old Leaf? That would be classic.
+1 for used Taycan content. I bought a used Model 3 next year; please don’t tell Matt.
Very interested in more used EV content. Would love to buy a used Taycan next.
I have not watched in a while. Matt looks great! Give that trainer a Christmas bonus and keep at it!
I love the idea of the used Taycan for you. I'm potentially changing up to a

My 7.5 Golf R/GTI is the pinnacle of interior for my tech tastes.
Another project car idea: Budget Cayman GT4RS, reliable performance Porsche for under $50-$60k
Thumbs up for the used Taycan. I bought my 2nd two year old EV in a row in 2023. I highly recommend it, especially if the battery is still under warranty but I'm honestly not worried about the longevity of the battery.
Matt, you know what would be interesting:
The $199/mo $0 down Vinfast EV lol
Im pretty sure that Tyler sold his Diablo awhile ago too. It was in the shop alot and he (and Wizard) kept having issues with getting parts for it. It was out of action a few months at a time while they waited for stuff.
Zack. I own a 2002 M3 and had my rod bearings done a few years back and I would HIGHLY advise you get yours done. Mine were well worn! You throw a rod and your M is a paper weight.
EV tech changes the most year by year. It make sense to lease new or purchase used. I'd love to see content about a used Taycan.
Yo where can we find info on the Smoky 600? I’m local and would be down but my Google-fu is weak
Going to put huge +1 as a long standing aura user. It is magical for my parents and very useful as they age. Thanks TST for what you do as well!
I'm playing the "used ev" experiment with a used Mach-e. Three years old with 30k miles = purchase price of more than half off of original MSRP. Zero warranty besides the manufacturer's power train warranty. All is well six months in.
What G Shock is Zach wearing? Thx
It's the comicbook/anime looking one. Don't know what it's exactly called.
@ Thanks. I think I have same watch but not the modded one!
I believe it's the G-Shock GA-2100MNG-7A. Matt got it for him as a gift
Considering a used Taycan/E-tron . Raising hand for content!
what about the very tactile wheels they are going to put on the R2/3 steering wheel? that is supposed to feel really nice and interact with the software in a dynamic ps5 controller feedback sort of way.
As some one who has rented and owns new-ish cars, here's a summary of my experience:
- 23 Lexus IS350 (owned) - swipe temp controls, physical HVAC.
Heated seat controls were mid, but the software (remembering the setting vehicle on/off) made up for it
- 98 M3 (owned) - hvac buttons, but loads.
So here for the used taycan content!!
I'm surprised that UTV manufacturers like Polaris or Can-Am aren't lobbying against kei trucks. They're a much cheaper alternative to a side by side.
I’m all for the used Taycan experiment.
Thanks!
Just picked up a lowish mileage 2020 M3P for
Yes to high end used EV content (Taycan / Lucid)
2015 Volt owner here. Very interested in used ev and used Taycan content. Love the wagon so much.
Taycan vote here. Also love everything Countach. No doubt painful for you, but love seeing the process.
I'd love to see that sort of thing with either an Air or a Taycan, since those are probably the 2 EVs that I think about the most
Can you guys go over the Honda/Nissan merger in the next episode please? Would love to hear your thoughts.
I find the Taycan fascinating, I would love to see content on a used one.
In 3 to 4 years, a used ev is likely to be the first ev for a ton of people. I'm down for that, since I prefer buying used.
As a used Tesla model 3 owner, I want to see used Taycan content. Make it happen good sir. I expect "I bought the Cheapest Taycan in the USA" in my feed
😂
Yes to Taycan CPO experiment. Especially the cheapest one you can get.
I'm looking at very cheap Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo Hybrids right now, but I don't think you got those in the States.
110% yes on used taycan content. I would love to get a cross turismo if you can show it’s worth it
I'm curious about used EV's in general - but can't see myself buying one for a while. I plan to drive my 05 VW Jetta for many more years. Haha. Wife has a 2012 Honda Pilot that I would consider selling one day for a used EV if it makes sense. All that tech scares me - how do you maintain these old batteries, how long do they last?
Interested in used taycan project. Considered doing myself. Also a Patreon member. Keep up the good work.
If you have to ppf an entire watch, you've overstretched yourself. Patina is one of the best parts of a watch.
@ 1:05:55 NO, Tyler does not have the Diablo. He got rid of that a long time ago. So now he has no countach nor Diablo....
Don’t miss Calais Winery in hill county, best wine in TX and Ben the owner is a trip.
I think a good compromise would be programmable buttons. But I haven’t heard any cars do it yet.
A late 5th gen QP S or GTS is a nice Maserati with a proper engine. despite random plastic pieces being sticky or breaking off in the interior. No used EVs for me, 2013 GTi daily with 5k oil changes till it dies.
I’d like to see Used Taycan content too!
100% +1 for used taycan content!
Yes to used Taycan content! I think used EVs are the best value proposition these days, especially if you qualify for the used EV tax credit.
Matt, MINI SE ev! They’re like 15k used with 20k miles and 6 years of warranty left! Yes the mileage is low, but its enough for city driving. Gotta practice what you preach about not living in crazy exess (same argument against masssssive evs being too much)
I've been saying the used taycan for a bit, you gotta get it
One the digital vent comment I can't stress how annoying it is.
Having motorized vents is only an advantage if it can be tied to memory seat settings. Same goes for touchscreen mirror controls.
Yes! Would love to see some used EV content.
Yes to used Taycan content and used EV content more generally. I'm personally looking at used EVs in the $25K-$35K range - e-tron, I-Pace, XC40 and Ariya.
