Idk what the real meaning is, but here's my guess: As kids, the girl gave the boy a red thread and tied it around his pinky (the string of fate or something like that) and told him it would keep them together forever. They went exploring one day and found a shed in the forest, telling each other that they would make a secret base out of it. When they were older, the girl passed away with the same kind of flower that the boy gave her when she was sad as a kid. The boy still held on to the red string of fate that kept them together. oh my god I just cried realizing how sad this is ;-;
If I'm not mistaken a string tied around ones pinky is usually done to help people remember something important kind of like "Why do I have a string tied to my pinky?... Oh right I had that assignment due tommorow!" so It could actually be that they tied strings around their Pinkies so that they wouldn't forget one another and this is further symbolized by him continuing to wear that string even after her death so that even if he grew old and senile and his memories warped and twisted he could still remember the girl he cared for immensely with the simple string that held those precious memories of her. It's honestly kinda sweet.

Yuki's version is so much better than Miku's tbh. Yuki has much more emotion in her voice that suits with the song. Miku's is too robotic and stoic (for this one specific song, I love Miku's voice in dubstep/electro songs)
makeitkawaii each of vocaloid has their own uniqueness and you can't say that this version is better than the original or otherwise. it IS robotic and stoic, what do you expect from vocal androids and voice synthesiser? I agree with Jaz 99, if they decide to remake this song with V4 it might more better than what you thought -.-
Slightly invalid. Both Yuki and Miku's versions are made in 2012. At that point, both engines are still in V2. Tuning did matter in both sides, (I should know, Miku's raw voice is crap) so the voice carried the emotion here.

Yuki is a very under-rated VOCALOID. She's actually my third favourite. I love this so much! It's just too cute.
