  • This video contains paid product placement for Madison Clothing. Just what is a high-pivot mountain bike? Truth be told, they’re not that different from regular mountain bikes. After all, they still have a drivetrain, wheels and rear suspension. But it's the rear suspension layout that makes them unique.
In this video, we explain why high-pivot bikes look the way they do, what the position of the high pivot does for performance, what the disadvantages are of the design and take a brief trip back in time to when high-pivot bikes first roamed the earth.
If you want to know even more, check out our review of the Trek Slash at the link below.
We’d love to know your thoughts too! Do you think high-pivot bikes are the future of mountain biking? Let us know in the comments.

Overly complicated engineering solution to a problem that doesn't exist (for most of us)

I'm sure a high pivot bike works. However, how much better is it than a regular bike? If you're racing, the few seconds you gain might be worth it. However, for the non-racer, all that extra expense, complication, and reduced efficiency for only a minimal gain might not be worth it.

Perhaps we should put them head to head one day!

They're good for making agile 29ers with shorter chainstays. Not to forget that they counteract the wheelbase shortening effects of fork compression with their rearward axle path, so they either stay stable under compression or get more stable.

What about high pivot e-bike, like Rocky Mountain? Or the concept presented by Yamaha last month in Tokyo?

I think chain wrap would be too much of an issue with the amount of torque you get on an e-bike. The idler wheel probably wouldn't handle it either.

Horses for courses, so I hope they aren't up for mass adoption because I don't really like the riding feel of them but for those that do, I hope they stay around.
