I thought for sure you were going to fill the plaster ceramic mold with slip, grew up with a ceramic studio in my basement, i really emjoyed that as a small child, never knew how they made the molds, so thanks for the lesson
THANK YOU so much!!! This has to be one of the best instructional videos that I have ever seen. Just the right pace, just the right detail. Now I am going to try making a mold that I have been thinking about for years. One question: do you have a video on making those 4 adjustable pieces that you used for the sides of the square mold?
A bit confused at the end usage - I thought this would be a slip-cast mold but you ended up press-casting? Wouldn't this mold work just fine for a liquid slip cast?
No, I’m confused at the end usage. As in, what’s the end use for a ceramic lightbulb? Or was that just used for demonstration purposes? Regardless, what’s some real life examples of when to use this process? Just art?
Thank you so much for this! I‘m giving my first class for making plaster molds and slip casting this semester. Your video helped me so much to eliminate some of the half-knowledge I have 😅🙏🏻
To determine the volume of a object fill a container with water then submerge the object in it and see how much the water rises. You have two way to figure out how much volume that is: 1) If the walls of the container are vertical than you can measure the how much the height of the water changed and multiply that times the area of the opening (like you showed for figuring the mold container volume. 2) You can draw a line for where to water rose to and remove the object then add water until it reaches the line. The volume of water you added is the volume of the object.
That was a lot easier to understand than his formula for doing it. No offense to him, as the video was very informative, I'm just NOT a math Wizz like that 😆
Hey Sam, this is such a useful video thanks so much for sharing. Can i ask what the updated material you now used as shown at 5mins.36 is? any help would be great
Hello, I have benefited a lot from your mold making video, thank you so much. I have a problem. All the people who teach mold making are always teaching how to make molds for clay materials. No one shows how to make molds to make hollow concrete materials. For example, one centimeter wall thickness, hollow inside, open mouth and closed bottom. Can you make a video showing how to make a concrete vase, pot or any container mold?
I am interested in making cement molds. I saw that they are made out silicon material, you know the one they use for baking silicon molds. They can be purchased as ready molds or you can mix silicone mixture to make your own molds. I tried to use gypsum mold for cement, but it was a disaster because cement (liquid) acts differently than clay (liquid). Clay can get off the plaster easy but cement will get glued to plaster mold.
@@dinaatanassova6310 Dear Dina Atanassova, thank you very much for your courtesy to reply. I send you my greetings, love and kisses from Turkey. 🙏💖💋💋💖🙏
Hi, Halil, the mould your are talking about would have to be rotated while curing to achieve that. Very advanced way of casting. And you need a silicon skin mould with hard case.
Hi @@Cuckoo23, thank you very much for your courtesy to reply. I know how to make a standard silicone mold. I don't know how to apply two-piece stays to hollow objects as clay artists do. And no one makes silicone molds for hollow objects. Thank you again. I send greetings from Turkey, love, respect, big hugs, good night.
@@halilbalaban1056 i think you just fill the inside of the container. I have seen the inside stuffed with paper or rocks and then topped off with clay or silicon. That prevents the slip from filling the inside. Once finished making the mold, you can remove the filler material. I am planning on making a set of coffee mugs. Thanks
Thank you! This is the best video explaining mold making I have seen. I have two questions: 1- Is it Murphy's oil? Or Murphy's soap... and 2- Can you put it on the clay the first time around to keep the clay from sticking to the plaster, so that the mold comes out a bit cleaner? Once again. Thank you so much for this video!
Very well done video. However, also chiming in to ask exactly what type of plastic sheet you're using in place of that metal flashing? That IS an important detail.
Thank you That was really detailed explanation After mold preparation ,can I pour liquid clay directly into the mold so that I can get intricate shapes clearly? Will I get a good casting in this method?
He’s not slip casting, which is what you’re describing. I’m not sure if this technique is called the same thing as in glass working but we would call using this process slumping…because the media “slumps” into the mold. I’ve not seen pottery done like this but I’m a novice. I think most people slip-cast, which is what you describe. Interesting! Ah, he just called it “press molding”.
Kto cię nauczył takiej roboty, nigdy by mi do głowy nie przyszło aby zrobić taki kształt formy , a tym bardziej tak kombinować z wykonaniem wyrobu z gliny
If you have a fired pottery figurine and it is solid how do you make a mould to replicate it? You need a spout to pour in the slip so thinking about the best way to accomplish this. Any tips?
hey mold master please reply, i have a doubt when we cast plaster in mould, before pouring plaster brushing 3 coat plaster can avoid the air bubble pores at product surface and get better finish after taking out product from mould am i right?

Putting wastewater with plaster in it, in the building's drain/waste piping could lead major problems. Place any water with plaster residue in a waste container and then in the trash. Allowing it to dry would be helpful.
Foam sticks to plaster, so do not try to cast a foam object in a plaster mold directly. Paint layers of latex into the mold first. Also, use something like Ultracal 30 or Hydrocal plaster for non-clay casting.
Hello, do not be tired, I'm fine, I'm unemployed now and I want to start a new job, which I love I want to know if the pot made with pottery powder should be put in the oven or not? Hi Just wanted to know. What type of clay do you use in the mould? Is it simple DAS Air Dry Clay or something else? And where could I buy it so that it would be cost effective as well...
At 9:04 the ratio of H20 : plaster, is the a volume or mass ratio? At 9:09 the screen shows 1ml H2O = 1g H2O but the voice says 1ml water = 1g PLASTER. Were do mls come into play? You appeared to use only a scale so I am definitely confused, did you go 1:1 by mass OR 1 H2O : 1.3 Plaster by mass?
I've watched tons of plaster-use instructional videos and this is my favorite so far. Comprehensive and still to the point.
This is THE BEST mold making instructions I've seen on here. Believe me I have watched A LOT!! TYSM! so helpful!😊
Incredibly well documented tutorial! Thanks a lot! 🎉
Thank you! You’ve included the details that I would have to watch a dozen videos for. Fantastic. :)

Great video and very informative. One word of caution about using reclaimed clay from plaster projects: You will get lime pop outs!
I agree... best presentation and narrative... sharp and to the point... and best of all...clean cut and professional.. Thanks for sharing

Very well done video. However, also chiming in to ask exactly what type of plastic sheet you're using in place of that metal flashing? That IS an important detail.
What is the plastic you're using now to replace the flashing called?
You made a point to show us an improvement, but neglected to tell us what it is!
I would have thought you'd use this as a slip mold.
Great process for the mold.
Thank you , it ‘s really helpfull ... i have one qestion , is there an alternative oil we can use instead of the one you used in the video?
Any similar release agent should work. There are many mold releases available on the market.

what type of clear plastic do you use for the clear flashing? thank you
Why use clay that dry? It seems easier to mix clay with water until it's a thick slurry and pour it and let it dry a bit then pour the excess out.

Can you use slip to make a more uniform layer of the first covering of the part?
You can even pour the slip into the mold, waiting a few minutes then pouring it out. That’s called slip casting.
Yea, I don't know why you'd push the clay in there rather than just slip casting it. Slip casting way simpler, so I'm confused.
Can this method be used to cast metal
Thanks. But do we really need to explain the difference between hollow and solid?
Can you use polymer clay instead of oil clay to fill in ?

Its ceramic clay
Air-dry does the trick, with the seam edges it may dry out but otherwise, all good!

why not just use three domes, placed asymmetrically to form keyed interconnects?
Vinegar? I would think alcohol would be better. No residue?

Make a silicone mold instead.

No, should really be a soap, oil can mess up the plaster.

Making the mold round is different. Square would have given the mold a leg to stand on.
He could just flatten a spot to give it a foot.

There is no need to use metric measurements. It's just as easy to do the math with inches and quarts.
