Then get some sleep and recover because there's going to be a lot more rule changes over the coming years. Thanks to social media, public outcry over things reaches critical mass in months now versus years in the olden days. The crowd demands changes within a league year. There's also much more money in the NFL nowadays so incentives are much higher now from the league office to keep the money flowing in the right direction. They want more money, hence the ratings need to keep steady or growing. People tune in to see explosive offensive plays and touchdowns. Hence, every inefficiency in the game needs to be tweaked towards more offense. Therefore: expect big rule tweaks on a yearly basis now. The masses need to be entertained. It's no wonder the gladiator spectacle grew from an ordinary theatre show to people without weapons getting eaten by hungry animals in front of crowds of tens of thousands. The needle only moves up.

It took talent and skills to be a K.O.R.

The kicker takes out his 7 iron and hopes to hit the green. The returner actually catches the ball, and returns it. Nothing was worse than last year's 22% return rate. A team would score, & you had a 5 minute break to take a dump. This kickoff isn't as exciting as the good old days, but there was still too many touchbacks. The fair catch was unbearable. I think this rule will change the physical composition of the returner. Before a kick returner was a burner that could cut at speed. With this rule, I think that you are going to want more of a thicker Deebo bang through contact arm tackle breaker. It will bring more value to the running back position.

A similar system worked well in the XFL. Incentivized returns and reduced injuries from full-speed collisions. It might take a couple of games to get used to, but it should be a boon for the league going forward.

Whether or not the rule change is good for the league, only time will tell. However it is good that they are at least trying new things and I definitely think it could be a major improvement, both in play and reducing the number of injuries that occur. Losing surprise onside kicks is a slight bummer, but its a small price to pay for making it more fun and interesting overall.

I got an idea to still make surprise onside kicks possible. Instead of having the players at the other 35, make it a hybrid. 2 offensive players lines up with the kicker, and 2 defensive players cover them. Then the rest of 8 offensive players and 8 defensive players lines up on the other 35. The players lined up with the kicker can move immediately after the ball is kicked. The players at the other 35 can only move after the ball is caught. The possibility of injury is still very low in this set up. High speed collisions can really only occur between the 2 offensive players lined up with the kicker and the returner. But this set up still allows for surprise onside kicks because there are 2 offensive players and 2 defensive players who can battle it out near the kicker.

That’s a 15 yard difference with no return. 10 yards more than the previous touchback. In a game where starting field position is key, kicking it out the back of the end zone is a bad idea unless the other team has one heck of a good returner.

So if I was a Coach I'd tell my players to stand at the 5 yd line and go no further back. Let the ball land within the 5 and I'll take my chances it rolls into the end zone. Don't even risk catching the ball within the 5. I wouldn't even bother to catch it if I was in the end zone. NOTHING GOOD CAN COME FROM TRYING TO CATCH THE BALL WITHIN THE 5. Sure, maybe I get caught starting at the 2...but very rarely. In my opinion, ST coaches have kick return strategy all wrong. Screw what the NFL wants teams to do. How many times have the Titans muffed the catch in the last few years?

I'm sure CBS approves of these changes but these NFL kickoff rule changes sissify the league make the NFL the National Sissy League (NSL) and are a camel's nose under the tent, meaning more to come. Like no more tackles just pulling flags from opposing player carrying the ball (flag football like in grade school), no more heavy blocks at the line of scrimmage with players just standing up to get in the way but no touching. And finally, once all of that is in place, women have to be allowed to play all positions in NSL football to completely 'woke' the sport.

  • @antoniokim8033

Most of the times they’re not going to return it. The teams that has decided to return most of the times they got tackled before reaching to the 30 yard line. So why not just do a touchback and start at 30. If the league really wants team to return more kickoffs move it back to 20 yard line then we’ll have teams always deciding to run it back.

I could see dclaring an onsides to instead doing a fair play. We're only looking at it one way, pretty much declaring an onside kick is like declearing a formation. There may be entire plays centered around declearing an onside kick.
It would be like setting up for a field goal but running it in instead. Thats how imagine coaches would use it.

I can’t believe people who love this game…. F the NFL… I’m talking about this game. Jim Thorpe is rolling in his grave right now for what this commissioner is doing to this sport. ROGER GOODELL needs to go. And who ever in the rules committee and in the players association agrees with GOODELL they also need to go.
This isn’t the football I played in the 90s… it’s a pansy powderpuff wwf side show. I don’t understand why nobody has stepped up to this bastard commissioner and told him that’s enough.
If you have love for this sport than you must boycott the NFL. Don’t watch its games don’t by your team gear until they restore some of what they took out of this game or ask for Roger GOODELL to be fired. I can’t believe people like Jerry jones allow this crap. They are from the old school and if I were in their shoes…. It would be over my dead body that they change this game so much:.. I know Al Davis wouldn’t be quiet. He would be furious…. If we continue to let this fool do as he wishes with this game…. Soon it won’t be football anymore. I ain’t buying anything nfl nor am I watching the games. It’s time to put our foot down. We pay to see football not the WWF. You aren’t paying for football and you’re paying for entertainment.

What they should of done is changed it to the way it originally was, but place the ball on the 25 yard line for the kicker to kick off to the opposing team's return man. If the ball ends up in the end zone and out, causing a touchback, that ball then should be placed on the 20 yard line and not the 25. Over rewarding and cheap the way it is currently 😒
