Thanks for this awesome explanation. I was diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome in May 2011. I had an adrenal adenoma in my right adrenal gland that was producing more than 100 times more cortisol that my body needed. It gave me high BP, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes and 50 pounds of weight gain over a short period of time. The diabetes going haywire even on medication made my doctor realize that it could be Cushing's Syndrome. I had a laparoscopic adrenalectomy to remove the tumour, and everything returned to normal levels within a few days. The tumour was about the size of a golf ball and luckily was not cancerous. It took me almost a year to recover fully but I am 100% ok now and have been for the past 12 years.
I have recently been diagnosed with subclinical hypercortisolism (adrenal Cushing's), but I've been suffering for years and years. I had a 60lb weight gain at 16 (over 2 months) and another 120lb weight gain (over one year) in my late 30s. I had the vivid stretch marks at 16 and into my mid 20s, but they finally faded. Four years ago (I'm now 51), I started getting bruises all over, ecchymoses, broken blood vessels on my cheeks and tore both medial menisci within 8 months of each other. I started to suspect a vitamin C deficiency when I started getting really painful canker sores. Supplementing with 2,000mg vitamin C daily has helped tremendously with the joint pain, thin skin, easy bruising and I'm even starting to see a bit of fading in my cheeks. From the reading that I've done, cortisol eats up the body's vitamin C stores. Vitamin C deficiency is highly correlated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, easy bruising, thin skin, fatty liver, but also osteoporosis! I really think vitamin C has a big role in many of the Cushing's symptoms. Just my own two cents, in case it's helpful to anyone out there. :)
Too many Endo Doctors don't have a clue when it comes to Cushing's. I went undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for 30 years, because I did not have many of the outward signs. Just 2 years ago, it was finally determined I had nodes on both adrenals. I was told my options were removal or medications. I chose medication. Then, I discovered that a partial adrenalectomy was possible. My Endo had no idea this procedure even existed. (?) Thankfully Dr. Carling at the Carling Adrenal center cured my Subclinical Cushing's in Dec of 2022.
I had two endocrinologists for the past four years. They didn't take me seriously at all until after I had a consult with Dr. Carling. He's amazing! Sadly, I can't lose enough weight to have my surgery with him. Congratulations on being cured!
Hi Dr. Gillard. I am desperately searching help re: dx of cushing's. Long story short; I have adrenal adenoma, small only 1.6cm but have not had another scan since last year. Meanwhile I have put on over 20lbs, round face, excess facial hair and horrible sleep cycle. Serum cortisol high but UFC normal. I have buffalo hump (but one doctor said it was tech neck which made me almost cry, bc i barely use my phone) and I feel like they are not taking me serious. Been to many doctors, but what seems to stump them and perhaps myself, is that the supraclavicular fat pads around my neck seem to enlarge and shrink. They are mostly there but do seem to dissipate. I am wondering if it's my body in the process or beginning stages of cushing's and that it's just not fully formed or progressed? My mother had passed from adrenal cancer so this is to say the least a bit of a concern. I am turning sadly to internet for help bc doctors are not taking me, I feel, serious. I am still in the stage of more testing but I feel so depleted and sick. Could you please tell me if the swelling or fat pads could possible change in the beginning? Thank you so much if you've read this post and for your help.
Check out cyclical cushing disease! So your cortisol levels are only high in some period of time...and the change can happen monthly, weekly or daily. Very hard to diagnose as you need to catch those hormonal levels at the right time. (Some say that you need to test when you are feeling Good! which sounds not logical, but we are all unique!) But it could explain what is happening. Also, check pseudo cushing syndrome. Good luck!!!
With my Cushings Disease I initially had high Testosterone, now many years later still have Cushings and Testosterone is now normal. ACTH and cortisol very high. But Still have hair growth on my double chin, losing tons of hair. How does this virilization continue without high Tesosterone/DHEAs?
Probably not; however, an adenoma called a prolactinoma, which is the most common type of pituitary tumor, can definitely elevate your prolactin. That said, there are super rare pituitary adenomas which can secrete both prolactin and ACTH, but this is incredibly rare. A prolactinoma is much more likely.

Hello, you need to find out what type of Cushing's disease you have, for sometimes it is treatable. These get it worked up by an endocrinologist!
