How to Strengthen Natural Nails with an Acrylic Overlay

  • Hey Guys,
    In this video, I'm going to show you how to do a natural overlay on a natural nail to give it some strength.
    I start off by prepping the nail so it is ready for me to apply the acrylic. Now that the nail is prepped and ready I start off by using Cameo as it is one of the pale pinks. I'm going to bleed out the back of the brush when I pick the bead up. Now I'm going to put this pale colour on at the end of the nail because we want this to look natural and obviously the end of the nail is a paler colour.
    I also use a very thin layer of Warm Beige on the nail, now I'm going to go over the top with a thin layer of Dramatic Pink.
    You can add a nice Gel Polish colour on top or you can just keep it natural and add a top coat.
    Hope you guys have enjoyed this video
    Kirsty

    my grandmother used to have this done. she had congestive heart failure and her nails were brittle because of it. the overlays kept her nails from breaking so much. every friday she'd have her hair and nails done. :)

      I had a client who was a nurse and I did a natural acrylic overlay on. She never said anything at work and no one ever noticed. She'd bust out her red polish on days off :)

    • @enelnombredelaluna
      @enelnombredelaluna 6 років тому +9

      ritag82 I understand the desire of having beautiful nails, but nurses are not allowed them because it’s dangerous. They work with needles and sometimes high risk patients, and nails get so much dirt under them that it could cause an infection on anyone because her hands would never be 100% sanitized. I learned this the hard way, please don’t do the same.

    For me, the best part of having an overlay is that I don't need gel polish - regular polish lasts for weeks at a time over acrylic.

      Hey, I've been doing this, putting acrylic over my natural nails but the acrylic keeps lifting, how can I stop this? Can you help please?

    • @solcinalli
      @solcinalli 5 років тому +23

      @@Plantlady1708 hey! Are you doing the correct prep on your nails? First, clean it, second file it (be careful not to damage it) so you create little pores on the nails so the acrylic can penetrate correctly. Then, put primer with acid, just a thin layer, this will make the nails sticky. Be careful not to touch your nails while doing this, because our skin is oily and we want to keep them as dehydrated as possible. Sorry if I said anything wrong, english is not my mother languaje

    Ok question - I've been growing my real/ natural nails for....oh gosh, I can't even say how many years. I use to get tips, and when I did, I tried acrylic and I tried gel. But on my natural nails, I've always gotten an acrylic overlay. (I still do particular things to care for my natural nails in between fills). But at times, i can be pretty tough on my nails.
    Currently, i am testing different ways and doing different things to strengthen my nails, I'd like them to be naturally thicker so that maybe one day I can be without the overlay. Also, recently, i allowed another nail tech to do my nails and it caused me a break. I'm extremely upset about this.
    So- #1....is acrylic or gel overlay better on my natural nails?
    #2.....any tips on care in between fills? Or tips on gaining strength or thickness?
    and #3.....if I can, what is the best way to transition from overlay to 100% natural?
    Love these videos!!!!! thanks a bunch!!!

    • @moriahnash4981
      @moriahnash4981 5 років тому +3

      Red SS idk if you got an answer- but if taken off properly you should be able to do acrylic or gel, the best way I’ve found to strengthen my natural nails is to make sure I’m taking a multivitamin and use lots of nail oil. It helps to make sure your nails are strong but also flexible which helps them to not break every time something hits them.

    can you do a hard gel overlay video too?

    • @5050hawaiianstar
      @5050hawaiianstar 7 років тому +10

      Yes, I do that with my natural nails occasionally. But I prefer acrylic on my nails, as I have found it to be more durable. Less steps also with acrylic ( i.m.o.)

    What if go to one of those neighborhood nail shops, how would I explain to them that I want the acrylic to help strengthen and grow my nails? Cause the one time I got acrylics, after I removed them my nails were brittle, damaged and rough.

    • @amrd89
      @amrd89 6 років тому +23

      Hey, don’t know if you ever got the answer to your question but usually I just tell them I want an acrylic overlay. If they don’t understand just say you want the acrylic on top, but no tips. Hopefully you are going to someone who received proper classes and certification so they should know what you want without you having to do too much explanation. Hope this helps!!

    • @amrd89
      @amrd89 6 років тому +22

      Also, I’d also tell them that you don’t want a lot of buffing done. But if you get your acrylics taken off properly, it’ll also reduce damage to your natural nail. Try not to bite them or pop them off, what this does is take the underlying layer off with them so you can see that your nails were done previously. For removal, take 100% acetone and apply to your tips and soak for 15-20 min. There should be several videos on UA-cam showing how to do this correctly. Again, hope this helps!

      I agree if you explain it they should be able to do it. I wear my nails short and square so by the second infill I have them cut down, basically leaving me with just an overlay. At my salon there is no difference in cost so it comes down to preference.

    exactly what I did a few days ago.
    I jacked my nails up before I was knowledgeable about acrylics and nails in general so I ripped of my acrylic nails over and over until I basically has NO nail bed and it was pretty much the layer underneath your nails.
    BUT I GAVE SUPER LONG nails a break, also heartbreak for me, and they are almost all grown out, like the entire nails are new growth(its taken months) but the free edges are jacked up still so I put on the tiniest acrylic nails and they don't hurt anymore. they're cute but I love long nails and I cant wait to put on set of long babies but I know im gonna have hard time adjusting
