Before conversion, I had two pet goals. One was a Halloween Kougra and the another a grey Yurble. At the time the price for the paint brushes were around the same cost. I saved up and painted my Kougra Halloween first. As I was saving up for the grey paint brush the conversion happened. My Halloween Kougra was auto-converted and I never got my grey yurble in time (which would have been a UC pet).The decision to paint my Kourga Halloween first, haunted me for years!!!! I am really happy that all the old pets got trophies, they were all UCs once in their pixel lives! Good for them! (Yet why is the trophy a Kacheek? What does that have to with anything?)

I think there's a handful of people who complain about NC/NC UCs in general seem to forget about all of Neopets' insidious in game advertising that was shoved in our faces when we were children from legit mega corporations like McDonalds and Coca-cola. Neopets has always had to pay for server costs, I'd rather it come from premium currency and customization stuff than selling out to some mega corp.
omg this is SUCH a good point! it’s clear they have moved away from that unethical means of doing business & keeping the lights on in an effort to be more self-sufficient and that’s genuinely a great & commendable thing bc yeah, there used to be ads IN EVERYTHING. my favorite game when i was a kid was that Bubbleyum candycrush game and there was LITERALLY A MCDONALDS IN NEOPIA CENTRAL!!!!!!!???? wow…. this comment is literally giving me a brain blast it’s all coming back to me. your mind….🙏 thank you for reminding me of this bc it’s so true & people don’t even realize how steeped in SCUMMY child advertising neopets used to be. this is MUCH better!

Im so thrilled that this is the time I chose to come back to neopets. Ive made several accounts over the two decades since my hay days as a kid, but never used them cuz the site was mostly broken - or all the items I used to know were now worthless lol.
Its so exciting to actually have a decent amount of neopoints and actually be able to use them for items that are cool! I also FINALLY got to "win" the stock market game lol - it always baffled me, but even child me knew if I could just understand it would be lucrative 😂
Anyways Im happy with all these developments and am having fun on the site every day.
once again my favorite neopets creators have nothing but correct opinions!! loved your takes on the ncuc/classic uc debacle, people tend to miss the forest for the trees when it comes to the subject of ucs so the nuance and perspective is sooo important

I got the Marble Draik Egg and the Magical MSP Poogle Plushie. I was excited for the Draik, but that same day I got my weekly prize of a Draik Transmogrification Potion and then I got the Pirate Draik Egg on the beach. xD

I always wanted a faerie Aisha growing up, and when my first pet became an Aisha again, I couldn't justify the cost for how simple faerie Aishas are and painted her baby instead. Now with NC UCs I can finally live the dream of her being a baby sometimes, and a faerie other times without costing me millions of neopoints to paint her back and forth. ;v;

the neopets community needs to be more critical about neocash gacha specifically. if i want something i should be able to BUY IT, or at least wait for it to cycle in and buy. abusing peoples gambling problems that i see in the community is gross. neopets has flown under the radar for this for too long

not only that but the vast majority of the site's wearables are retired neocash items? whats up with that. i've warmed up to customization in my few months back but why in gods name is like 85% of wearables ever made just entirely inaccessible if you havent been on the site for the last fucking 16 years

Awesome video! I had a lot of the same thoughts as you. UCs, while cool, incentivized hacking and theft. Which is not only morally wrong, but then wastes a bunch of TNTs time. Like, all the effort they had to put into untangling stolen pets and making new UCs could have gone into fixing bugs, adding new features, or even creating new plots. I think the current Styling Studio is a great option to keep the old art, make it accessible to everyone, and like you said even open up the possibility of NEW (not nostalgic) poses without the dumb fist. (I was looking at my Neopets yesterday and realized EVERY one of them was a quadroped, lol. I subconsciously saw The Fist and was like "no.")
About the pets not having to be painted the same color as the nostalgic style: I think the token not depending on the color is better because it feels unfair for TNT to be like: "Buy this item with real world money! Okay . . . now spend millions of fake money on a paint brush so you can actually use it. :)" IMO that is just asking for new players to feel tricked and discouraged.
On a personal level I also like the pet's 'real' color and Nostalgia style being unrelated because then I can gussy up my lab pet or have "story events" that fit my personal headcanon, based on the UC tokens. Like a pets with a dual personality who is Darigan part of the time and Faerie part of the time or a pet who turns grey after, I dunno, getting neodivorced or something. And maybe I don't want him grey forever, but just for a few weeks.
Okay, of course I want to talk about which Nostalgia styles I got! I liked all three Ixi styles so I did a random one and got Grey. Then I took it off and used the Deluxe kit to get the Fairy Ixi skin. I took that off too and used my Ice Hissi Morphing Potion to turn the Ixi into a Hissi and used the random styling kit, which gave me Darigan. I liked the Darigan Hissi but I just haaaad to have the Fairy Hissi too, so I took off the Darigan token and used Deluxe again to get Fairy. So that single Neopet has had four UC skins so far, ha ha!
Once you find out how much of the trading community is steeped in stolen (or not even stolen, just the amount involved in buying and selling) pets, it becomes a bit of a farce trading for goals. The people who gave me hope with their trades I would later find out were involved as well in some way or another. The process is extremely easy thanks to the data leaks in the past. You said you won't get away with it, but they do, constantly. Once you know you know X) and I'm saying this as someone who was a big big trader up to the higherst value pets

i'm so excited for a new event but i've heard that so many of the last few events have been battledome ones and i'm so tired, i don't want to be training for the battledome, i want to do puzzles and click 400 windows on a jpg until i find the one randomized doorway that'll let me into the punch club. crying sobbing weeping with my frail and useless little pets

When my pets were converted back in 2007 I quit shortly after. My only painted pet was a Boochi-zapped Petri lol.
UCs are a huge part of Neopets! That art is iconic and was literally the entire draw of Neopets for so many of us kids playing. Shortly before flash died I made a new account to relive some childhood memories, so I was really happy they finally brought the art back, and am pleased with the rollout. I’m also back to playing every day because it’s actually so fun now! You still do have to play consistently to get really good stuff but the difference is I don’t have to grind for years to paint my pet like I did as a kid. I do feel bad for the players with OG UCs bc their pets had to be auto converted but then again, ALL of our pets had to be auto-converted and none of us had the choice. Now, at least we can all choose what our pets look like and have more freedom than ever. A win-win in my book.
Yeah the people complaining about their UCs being converted seem to miss the point that for the majority of us, we NEVER had the option of UCs because only a random select few were able to keep the old artwork. Also a lot of UCs in circulation actually stolen off old accounts, and people were making IRL money selling their stolen pets… I think making UCs available for everyone is very smart because it means Neopets is getting that money that people used to be spend on shady websites to buy UCs!

I totally get being upset about your UCs being converted, but I swear some of them are nuts. I read one post in pound chat talking about suing for emotional damage, another saying governments should represent the people. There is an entire thread on reddit with the best ones. I do genuinely feel for the ones who are just upset but those on the PC screaming about how their life is ruined makes me giggle.
The absolute craziness of the black market and all the drama, I had no idea what UC’s were the entire time but when I tell you I was drawn in ✨ got me through so much cleaning/baking craziness before Easter so thank you!!💜

I got the Magical MSP Plushie from the Neopies the other day LOL As a plushie collector I'm struggling with whether or not I should use it and have it turn int a non magical one. The Lab ray turned my main kacheek into a red bruce and made her worse by making her eventide... lol she might become the MSP poogle

I am also the same way. I don’t want my pets to not be the same color as the NCUC. The fact that my childhood dream of having a Faerie Poogle… crying.
You have an EXCELLENT point with the trophies, Amanda. I have been a user for years but I was a dumb kid at first and when the conversion happened I had no painted pets at all, so I wasn't eligible for keeping any of my pets unconverted. Fast forward to now, I was caught off gaurd and so moved to see my original pets honored for being there so long ago and, as you pointed out, having had an unconverted form that was lost entirely to time. I understand UC owners being upset their pets weren't singled out for this, but I imagine if they were, a lot of the toxicity of the UC trading system would have remained in place, including an incentive for hackers to go after them. Better to just leave it all behind and honor our history.

I rejoined neopets a little before the faerie festival after watching one of your videos on it, and while it hasn't been perfect I really feel like TNT has been doing their best to try to make the site welcoming for players like me. Especially with all the efforts to de-inflate old items, and the fountain faerie quests etc. it's honestly been really fun. I'm soooo excited we get NC UCs as an option now as a newer player, tbh it's pretty close to an ideal system with a lot of potential. I was disappointed to see the "gatcha-like" aspect they included for this though, like that seems to make sense for things like wearables but doesn't really translate in my mind to pet colors since it's so different from the paintbrush system. but there is a non gatcha option and I'll be going with that. love videos as always and so excited for the pet lore video coming up!!
So what I'm hearing is, they legalized it, regulated it, taxed it, and in doing so are eliminating a lot of crime? Interesting. 🤔
I want to come back to neopets but my computer's been broken for a year. Sort of got fixed, but then the antivirus bugged out and now I have to fix that, but seasonal depression's kicking my ass atm. Hopefully I'll get it done before the new plot starts.

Yooooo I was wondering where all the great uc names came from. I had 3 from trading within the first year of ucs and then didn't do it after. I even traded away one awhile back for a name (really glad I did in hindsight lmao). I was super confused cause early uc trading had keyboard mashes for names then later it was all vwn gods.
It is bad though cause younger me absolutely eyeballed buying an uc but then luckily decided against cause it felt icky (despite not knowing the whole process at the time). I do really like the option for everyone to get one now. I think they made the right fix

My main concern isn't the removal of UCs from the trading pool, it's that along with the rumors that TNT is going to eventually remove names by making names non-unique. While it would be nice to pick whatever names we'd like, it would also take some of the uniqueness from Neo itself, and worse, it would effectively ruin pet trading for good. All that would be left to trade is aged pets, which will eventually all be purged (with the pound and account purges that Dom mentioned in the AMA) or become permanent pets and leave the trading pool, and BD pets. If BD pets were all that trading will eventually be about, that would essentially make trading not a thing. Yeah, I know pet trading was "not intended" in the first place, but it's become part of the site and it's fun for a lot of people to snag names, have unique names, and trade for names they want more.
I'm also very leery about Dom saying that they're going to remove stuck pets instead of fixing the broken images stopping people from stuck searching, as stuck searching was a big part of what I, and many other people do on Neo. Yeah, the strings are running out naturally through the pound itself, but they could have fixed that by re-opening pound_release. Instead, they've been ignoring the userbase's pleas to reopen pound_release and let all of the really nice, old pets out of their purgatory, and have decided to just get rid of stuck pets as a thing. Sure, stuck pets are also not an "intended feature", but it makes the site fun and unique, much like unique names.
I really feel like management is trying to take away all of the unintended features that make Neopets, well... Neopets, and trying to update the site to make it like all the other pet sites that exist. It makes me really sad, because I'm playing Neopets for for what it is, and if I wanted to play another pet site, I'd just play another pet site. But I'm not playing other petsites because those don't really interest me, and if Neopets becomes just like all the other petsites, I wouldn't have fun playing it, either. I guess I sound a little pessimistic, but I feel like I'm really seeing the writing on the wall that Neopets staff don't want to keep any part of the site that I'm playing for, and it makes me sad.
They absolutely should make names non-unique. When someone wants to make their Neopet version of their RL pet or their favorite character, they want to name it "Whiskers", "Shadowheart", or "Luffy", not "Whiskers3029", "Shadoehaart" or "____o0LuffyAnimeOnePiece0o____". I'm sure a lot of potential new players get as far as the "choose your name" part of the game and quit. I get the angst of longtime players who like the aspects of play that come from this weird quirk of Neopets, but I also started playing "back in the day" and I hate the "unique name" thing, lol. I wish I could have named my pets what I actually wanted to name them.
