Hey guys! Sorry for the annoying blurring around 5:00. Marapets is trying to have this video taken down for 'violation of privacy' because it showed Ian's name and pfp so I had to censor it. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that's not the only reason they want the video taken down, considering they were talking about having it taken down for 'slander' in their forums. It's totally fine if they disagree with my takes but filing false reports to silence criticism is big lame. Hopefully it stays up, thanks for watching!!!! :)

Disney actually also has a plus sized fairy character in the Tinkerbell movies called Fairy Mary. They never fat shame her, insinuate that she over eats and she actually helps Tinker bell with calming herself down in "Tinkerbell and The Lost Treasure". Not to mention that she's also a very talented ice skater.
If a company like Disney can do the bare minimum, it's embarrassing that Marapets can't do the same.

the "obese" fairy seems like a kitchen fairy to me. She channels her magic through food and loves cooking and experimenting with different recipes all day. She bakes the best cakes and probably runs a magic pastry shop with all kinds of enchanting sweets. In her free time, she writes recipe books about different dishes/ingredients and their magical properties, she also loves baking with her friends.
That’s an amazing bio, I wish they used that instead of “ShE lIkEs tO eAt”

I am personally an artist, and 5 dollars for a unique character design is an EXTREMELY bad deal. I understand 5 dollars for maybe a small discord emoji that not too detailed. But a full character design? Most artists sell their art for 20 - 30 dollars which makes sense on how much time it can take.
If someone tried to pay me 5 dollars for the time and effort it takes to design a character they're getting a stick figure or a colored base

My new headcanon is that her name is Candi Floss. After an accident she was no longer able to use her wings, as she managed to rupture some of the muscle tissue in the stems. So, she had to quit her job as a delivery worker at Sweet Dreams Bakery, and moved to a different village. She decided to open her own bakery, and now makes cookies and other sweet treats for her friends in the village.

It sometimes makes me wonder what kind of life these people lead where they think its ok to love a character dearly and also make their entire description a hurtful, bigoted dump on their life. Really sad because she is a beautiful character that was obviously designed by an artist with love. I doubt the artist was given that bio to work with when making her. A mascot is supposed to be the face of your brand and be the top example of what your site has to offer. In a way, she's fitting. A deceptively cute look that makes you think "wow, they must be great accepting people here, just look at their wonderful mascot. . . . oh."
Oh my god I remember Marapets. I visited the site in its very early days and I swear to god there was even more offensive stuff than this. A ton of weirdly specific and insulting stereotypes, the site almost seemed downright fixated on the idea. It wasn't in a cute way either, it almost seemed downright insulting, like I can remember a costume based around basically trailer trash that made the pets unkempt and wearing overalls, plus a lot of the other ones you mentioned in this video.
As a kid I just remember picking up on the mean-spirited vibes. Even when I was young I recognized that something about the site's designs just seemed kind of unpleasant. There's this line being crossed between fun parody and mean-spirited ridicule that it just loves crossing for some reason.
Also, idk if it's still the case to this day but they used to instantly ban anyone who talked about Neopets on their forums. That's totally unrelated, I just found it hilarious.

obesity and morbid obesity are medical conditions in and of themselves, and if someone is getting to those types of weight gain where they are becoming a danger to themselves, then its more likely they have some kind of underlying condition, whether it be something that hinders their ability to regulate their weight, such as hyperthyroidism or side effects from medication, or an underlying disordered eating problem. when someone is *morbidly obese*, whatever the cause of this may be, they are ill, chronically ill! and thats something that they deserve to be treated for just as much as you, or any other person under universal healthcare.
universal healthcare is there to help EVERYBODY, and that *does* include people that you may believe have "brought it on themselves", such as people suffering from eating disorders, addicts, and anyone else suffering from what is a psychological problem than can be fixed with the right care and support. i appreciate your frustration as a disabled person, im mentally disabled myself and lord knows ive had my grievances with the way that the healthcare system operates in my country, are you really going to turn around and say that certain people dont DESERVE support and treatment, just because you dont personally see them to be as high priority to you??

I am someone who benefits from public healthcare as well. My father has several invisible illnesses, including but not limited to EDS. We'd both be dead without public healthcare. Blaming any individual person for "taking your resources" is absolutely disgusting and toxically individualistic of you. If there is an issue getting your healthcare to pay for something that is a fault of the system and not a fault of someone who is also benefitting from the system.
It's foolish to think everyone who reads as "obese" to you actually has health problems related to their weight, either. The character in this video who is designated as "obese" would likely be perfectly fine. She's not even that big. Most people I know who are fat are physically healthier than I am as well.
Some people are born fat. Some people become fat out of mental illness. Some people have an eating disorder that makes them fat or are recovering from an eating disorder which may also cause them to gain weight. Even if this wasn't the case there is NO FUCKING JUSTIFICATION for bullying someone based on their appearance! Even if they did this to themselves by being "lazy" (which is also usually a sigh of a mental disorder), what other situation would you mock someone for hurting themselves to the point of needing care? Do you hold the same opinion of people who do drugs and then need rehab? Do you believe they should be socially shamed for developing an issue? What about people who self harm or try to commit suicide? Do you believe they're a strain on others and should be denied help, that they should be shamed for trying to hurt themselves?
I'd also like to point out that being "big boned" is in no way pseudoscience? People can be percieved as fat because their bone structure is different, the same way some people have extremely wide hips even though their skinny or no jawline even though they're skinny. There's also the fact that fatness is often hereditary and entirely based upon outside appearance. Someone who is considered of "normal" weight can look fat because of the way their weight lies on their body. It is never your place to judge someone and mock them based on what you can see. You have no idea what's happening in their life. You state that you don't have the same opinion of poor people who become fat out of inability to be healthy, but by your logic you also wish to taunt every fat person that you see. How the hell can these two work together? You'll end up shaming the people you don't want to be shaming. This doesn't make any sense.

TBH, both the problematic content and the creator's response are exactly what I expect from marapets. From what I've always understood since I stumbled across the site years ago, is that it was "edgy" on purpose, in a "if you're gonna ban me, I'll just make my own virtual pet site! with blackjack... and hookers!" Kind of way. (Granted, when I think of edgy marapets content, the death mechanic and at times gruesome artwork is usually what comes to mind, not blatantly racist imagery) knowing now how they treat their artists is another reason to be glad I got into neopets instead.

4:02 I'll be honest, I had no idea that Voodoo was proper religion with such a long history. As much as I love the idea behind the modern depictions of Voodoo, reading a bit about it show how different the tropes are from reality.

As a continued Neopets fan and user I never felt the desire to migrate to Marapets, mainly because of the oddly mean-spirited content seen here. And that's not even including stuff like the canon backstories for the Trash Fairy, Homeless Fairy, etc. It all just feels very edgy and needlessly cruel. You can tell a 15 year old initially made this and it just never grew up with them. A time capsule of bitterness
I do kinda like Marapets over Neopets because MP has a better response team/time than NP, who i tried to contact over a year ago because i couldnt get into my account/it said it was 'frozen' despite me doing absolutely nothing/it must have assumed i was trying to hack my own account since i was logged in on and old laptop and tried to log in with my new one. When i try now its like 'there was a data breach, you should change your password' etc. and i dont have access to /dont remember the email i used to make the account (i was like, 10-11 when i made it) and never heard anything back from them

She found an old witches house and asked for a better life. Without knowing the cost she agreed to be the best baker who makes beautiful sweets across the land in exchange for not being able to fly. Some people say if you meet her daily she will give you sweets that tell the aftermath of her disappearance from being queen." If you collect them all and not use them for yourself but for her when you collect them all then she will tell you the story herself then she will give you a free outfit.

Dear god how did I not see this until now?! I remember making that obese fairy sprite so long ago.
Story time:
I was a very small artist, I was known for my characters and stories being widely unique and original. Which I guess were the 2 main reasons why Ian probably hired me. He dm'd me saying he owned a professional pet-care mmo website and he was interested in me working on some sprites. I happily excepted because how he explained it, I would be working on a trending site that many could see my art and name for the credits. I should have known that my non-awareness of the site.
I got to work and I did a lot of many different sprites, he didn't tell me what they were going to be used for or anything. He even let me send him some other design concepts of my own and claimed he would consider adding them if he liked them.
He hardly paid me REAL MONEY, he would usually pay me 7 bucks a drawing and he would dock my pay if I didn't correctly draw his description and/or critiques. There were times he claimed to not have the money and instead would pay me his in-game currency from the site. It was very idiotic of me to not see that major red flag, but I was 16 at the time and I never had a professional job like this, and he convinced me he too was young and said most of the money he made went to the game and sometimes were not split even enough for many other artists, so I pitied him and excepted it out of kindness. He wouldn't talk to me for weeks if I had a day off, schedule hell, and other reasons. I thought maybe he was just on edge or something but what made me come to the realization was the obese fairy sprite work.
He said he wanted me to draw something human-like to give more diversity and specialty to the game. I happily agreed out of excitement because I love drawing fairies. His description was something like "A fairy with a sweet yet sassy appearance, female specific". Meaning he wanted a female fairy. When working on this, I thought it would be interesting if I were to draw her 'plus size' or have a 'larger appearance' (trying to word it to the best of my abilities, english is my second language). So I drew her like the sprite that started this mess. I remember putting minor notes for description ideas, a tooth fairy, a fairy that bakes sweets to cheer up sad creatures, or a fairy godmother concept. Ian flipped out when he saw the drawing, he said she was ugly, that it wasn't what he wanted, he demanded I had to make her thinner or he said he would not pay me for the whole week and get another artist to do draw it instead. I didn't want that to happen so i rushed to make multiple drawings of her thinner, which honestly felt awful doing it. I sent him the thinner drawings and he said she lost the unique style of her before picture. I told him that it was all I could do. He said it was fine and angrily said he wouldn't pay me and I was fired for being 'disobedient'. He said he was keeping all the work I did for him, and I didn't care because it was very childish of him to get mad like that. I finally found the website, which by the way, he never told me the website name nor did he send me screenshots, links, etc. I saw that some of the work he accepted was edited in such a low quality way and my ideas for names, description, etc, were all discarded and made really strange and inappropriate for some.
It was a while but I was able to see the 'obese fairy' when she came out and I was so furious of how he made this description for her just for childish reasons.
I am glad he is being called out for what he has done and I hate that he turned such a pretty concept into such an ugly thing.
He just hates getting any form of negative feedback towards him so he just behaves back like he is some kind of 2002 scene king or something.

Honestly their biggest issue is probably just being lazy like the costume design itself would be fine if they just called it something like "cannibal costume" or something along those lines, the voodoo costumes would be fine if they called them something like "spooky costume" idk man I'm not creative but like it's all too easy yaknow? They didn't put in effort they just wanted a "haha funny" moment at someone else's expense. "The obese fairy", the yellow Asian skins, the red indian skins, and the "skinny" skins were probably the worst because it can't be all chalked up to being lazy but like... Hello! It's been 8 months ago since I've wrote my take on that "Obese Fairy", now I'm here to remake it!
Now I call this fairy "Red Velvetta", like the red velvet cake.
Now the description:
Red Velvetta is a hardworking fairy grandmother always ready to make treats for her friends, family and people in her town. She even runs her own bakery chain with her grandkids - the bakeries are scattered around the world so you can buy her delicious treats anywhere you'll be! So how about opening the door to one of her shops and buy a croissant, or red velvet cake or just your favorite dessert? Who knows, maybe you're her next grandkid?
Now the backstory for why she can't fly:
Unfortunately, when she was a kid, Velvetta fell from a high tree and injured her wings - since then, she can't fly as her wings can't be fixed again. Luckily, she can fly around the world on her pet pegasus named Bubbles - he also helps her to deliver her treats to all the spots in the world!

Oh boy I haven't heard of marapets in years. I remember when I was in high school (2008-2012) one of my close friends was an artist for them. It never occurred to me that they were abusive to their artists but yeah she was young and her family didn't have a ton of money so she always clung to the job, I remember she used to doodle through a lot of classes just working on stuff for them.
Her name and description are bland as hell. She's a thick woman with a retro 50's sense of style. You can do better. She's already really interesting as it is.
I remember I had an account there and then said nope when I saw the obese fairy. My mum struggles with weight issues so yeaaaaah struck me too close to home. Like she is well designed but ya know, that is where the good ended.

While not nearly as egregious, I think Neopets deserves an analysis of its shortcomings as well. Similar things could be said about the Mystery Island and the Lost Desert, and perhaps Shenkuu.

I understand your point of view, but to some people this can be very offensive because of how a stereotype affected them harmfully, and seeing that in a kids game as just harmless character could come off as really uncaring to what those stereotypes can imply. Another big problem was the artists. I don’t know if you know this, but artists to be treated like that is very unethical as explained in the video. The average for a full body commission is usually around 15-25 dollars. Five dollars is a very low amount. Not to mention asking for as many as 50 drawings a day. The artists were being overworked and were inexperienced when it comes to commissions, so they were treated horribly and targeted unfairly. Sorry if this comes off as rude, I just wanted to clear things up for you :)
