My first (slightly awkward) YouTube video on my narrowboat

- Hello, I'm Betty! I really enjoy watching other people's narrowboat videos so I thought I'd have a go at making my own.
I'm quite a smiley and cheerful person in real life but I was nervous while filming this. I feel a bit of a plonker talking to a camera but hopefully I'll get better at it.
#narrowboat #canal #boatlife
This is so authentic. This is the type of content that I'm more interested in now days, not the polished over edited influencer garbage
Thank you, that's nice to hear!
Don't get me wrong, the polished stuff can be good but it's far better looking at what appears as normal everyday vlogs 👍.
@@Goat.Herder I agree, some polished stuff is great too. Polished stuff can also be authentic - but it's rare from what I see

Loving your videos
Absolutely no need to be nervous Betty .. You have a charming narration and you seem right at home with your video. Long may you continue 😀
Thanks very much!
In a world where everything seems to be going terribly wrong, videos like this make me realise there’s still some nice things out there. Lovely video, lovely boat, lovely woman. Thank you.
Boating makes me realise that there are actually some lovely people out there too. it has restored my faith in fellow human beings!
@@bettyonaboat You make the whole thing look easy but I’m sure there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye, I hope you delve further into it. I’m looking forward to your next video and seeing the seasons change on your journeys. Stay safe🙂
I think there's something about being nomadic. There's a freedom that comes with carrying your little home with you. You don't sit on a property that's fenced in from neighbours on most sides, where you're basically stuck. You're free to move around, and so are the ones you meet along the way/canal. I think that does something to people.
@@bettyonaboat Ah yeah.. the sort of people you pass in those kind of places all say "good morning" and smile at you.. not like in the built up areas. I guess the more desolate an area, the friendlier the people. Then you get to somewhere like London and everyone is just sick of people. 😆
In a world where there are too many not very nice people emerging amongst us, it’s nice to see and hear a genuinely nice person
As you said, you make videos so you can watch them back in years to come and enjoy the experience, thats the key ~ doing it for yourself and if others like it to great!
Nice video, I liked it!
Yes, I just want to enjoy making them!
The fact that you left in bits where you talk about people passing, when they could have been edited out, makes it quite endearing. Making it feel more raw and natural and real. Just you being you. Love it.
Thank you!
@@bettyonaboat no problem. have always wondered and dreamed about narrowboat life. is it all its cracked up to be?
@@mcsonicteam There are some definite downsides, which I'll try to show in future videos!
She's going to be a huge You Tube star.
“Oh god there’s people coming” haha I love it.
😂
People? Shout at them Betty! "Do not interrupt my running commentary!" 😉
Or is that just what rude people do these days? Whilst being surgically attached to their mobile phones 🙄
It's nice to see someone who is humble. It's a great quality and one others like.
Thank you, that's really nice of you to say!
Nice words.
Lovely to see you so enjoying this sweet boat, looking forward to seeing your travels 😊
This is a great video if it's your first one! Good on you for sharing :)
Thank you! It's my first UA-cam video on my narrowboat but I did upload some drone footage a few years ago.
Great first video! Loved the filming style and the gentle humour in your narration. Have subscribed and look forward to following your adventures…
The more videos I do you'll realise I'm a bit mad...
What a refreshing change it is to see someone gaining traction on this platform without being full of them selves and being completely transparent...zero gimmicks or flashing lights.
Also really well edited, this isn't my usual type of channel but I've subbed anyway!
Let's give more creators like this a big platform for their work
Thank you, I hope you like my videos despite the narrowboat content!
@@bettyonaboat oh I don't mind narrow boats at all,
I grew up in West Yorks and spent most summers down by the canals
this just isn't my usual go to video on UA-cam, I'm glad it was recommended though 🙏🏻

I just found this video and am so happy that I did. Thank You. If all the people walking by hear you talking to us, your new friends, just smile and nod. Water people are special and if others do not understand, sadly that is their loss. Just be you- you are the only one that can do that and we find it delightful.
Thank you, that’s really kind of you to say!
Nice to see someone being their genuine self. I'm bored of all these show ponies - with their UA-cam issued personalities. Keep up the good work. Hopefully see you again soon. All the best with everything. 👍

That was a lovely first video. Thank you for sharing it and I hope you make many more.
nice start to your channel, great drone shots also, subscribed and look forward to following your journey, good luck
Thank you for watching!
So hi Betty, what a fab life! I would sell up and do exactly the same if circumstances allowed, loving your channel and information about the whole boating scene!
Well done 👌🏻
Thank you very much! 😀
Yay for introverts! Love this! Thanks for jumping out of your comfort zone!
Thank you, I think it's good to jump out of your comfort zone!
I’ve got no idea why this was recommended to me, but I’m so glad it was. Very pleased to meet you, Betty. I’ll look forward to watching many more of your adventures. 🏴☠️🏴

Refreshingly honest and entertaining. Thank you!
I'm glad you found it entertaining - I thought it might be a bit boring! 😄
Lovely video and it looks as though you have replied to everyone! That’s impressive.
I started when I had just a few comments not realising how many there would be!
Hi Betty, what an awesome first vid - you are a really likeable person and I would love to see all and anything you do on you narrow boat journey - even the little things you may think are boring - just do a small vid and do plenty of them - your channel will soon grow I am sure - I have liked and subscribed as I think you are an awesome content creator and I am glad to get in from the start. Keep it up 🙂
Thanks for subscribing! To be honest I'm not really sure what to show because I don't know what is going to be too boring. For example, I filmed myself doing some DIY to the boat the other day, but do people really want to see that?!
I love it when a New UA-camr starts up, A journey we can all take together. Good Luck xx
It's literally a journey with me!
Hi, Betty. Loved your hesitant nervous opening sequence. I know the feeling. I'll happily talk to six hundred people at the charity events we organised - no nerves at all - but talk to camera - I mess up. I can do facetime but not to camera. I expect you realise you are joining a friendly community of UA-camrs who will be there for you with help and advice. Looking forward to seeing you channel develop.
I think it feels unnatural because there isn't another human there. It would be easier if a friend were doing the filming, I think. Everyone has been really friendly though. I'm glad you liked the video!
@@bettyonaboat Easy to solve that: before you switch on the camera think of a person you really get along easily with, imagine they are behind the camera (I mean, literally standing behind), and talk to them. Lots of people make the mistake of thinking they are talking to everyone watching, like an audience; the skill is to make the viewer think you are only talking to them. Imagining one person that you are talking to helps with that. Looking forward to your next videos.
Nice to see a new narrow boat channel. Don't worry about being awkward on camera, it will get easier with practice. Wishing you all the best.
Thanks, I'm hoping my confidence will grow!
Aw love how genuine you are! So stylish too ❤😊 I'd be looking like a right scruff haha 😄
Haha, thank you!
That was great, nothing wrong with your presentation at all, in fact in makes a refreshing change to all the shouty influencer types, much more genuine. I hoope your channel does really well.
Thank you very much, that's really kind of you to say. 🙂
Respect to anyone who takes the time to film and edit. Thank you :)
Thanks, it's the editing that seems to take the longest!
You just make me smile.. and happy. A genuinely sweet and lovely person.. you are refreshing in this crazy time.. best to you and your family.. including your swan.. Frank in Colorado
Thank you!
lol. I ducked when you went under the bridge. great video
It was quite a low bridge!
Loved your first video. I’m amazed you can untie and tie up on your own. I’ve been on a canal boat a couple of times and it can be hard work, admittedly the one I was on was rather large. I like the look of a small canal boat, especially if it’s manageable on your own. Thank you
I think a small boat does make things easier to be fair! I'm glad you enjoyed my first video. I've uploaded two more if you fancy checking them out?
I certainly will. Look forward to seeing more of your travels.
great vid Betty, keep them coming when you can, would like to learn about your canalboat history E.G. how long you have owned a boat ect...
Yes, I plan to talk about this in future videos!
Concentrate on what you want, do it the way you want, enjoy doing it and sod everyone else. You are doing OK. Keep it going.

That was a lovely first video, thank you. When I first discovered UA-cam narrowboat videos last year I followed a bunch of them, at least a dozen. I've whittled that down to only two that I follow regularly. Shout out to The Narrowboat Pirate (Arrr!) and Narrowboat Life Unlocked.

Hi Betty, this is my 24th year as a live aboard, same boat since year 2000. Great to see a lady boater enjoying this lifestyle. As you probably know it has its ups and downs and isn’t for the faint hearted but I believe it is character and self confidence builder. You’ll find most boaters are decent types if you ever need help or guidance. I look forward to seeing more of your journeys, good luck and be safe 👍🏻
Yes, I was actually blown away by how helpful everyone was when I first got the boat and had to do 171 miles in two weeks! I had to go through 74 locks and there's no way I would have been able to make it if the other boaters hadn't helped me. I remember thinking it was like an alternative universe where everyone was kind and helped each other.
@@bettyonaboat I think it’s because most of us are like minded people who escaped the rat race and just want some peace and be closer to nature, having said that please keep your wits about you and always be prepared for the unexpected
I went on a couple of narrowboat holidays and they were very enjoyable.
Yes they're very fun, especially with a group of friends.
Well done and good luck 😊

A really engaging first video! The overall style was well put together and edited. The musical interludes worked well, and the drone shots were another highlight.

Hi Betty. Just started watching your channel. You are a natural on camera, and there is no showmanship. It's you being yourself, and that's rare on youtube. You are absolutely a success already so early on. Over 2k comments on your first video is so impressive. I have happily subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to watching your channel grow along with your confidence on camera. I think this is fast going to become my favourite narrowboating channel. Sending love and positivity your way x
Loved the video! I curently have a narrowboat moored on the llangollen canal, and have moved to the east midlands for work, so just looking for a mooring near this area. If i pass you on the cut, ill make you a brew 😊 good luck with the channel, and your boating adventure!
I hired a boat with some friends last March and we went on the Llangollen Canal - it's really beautiful there! Good luck with looking for your mooring. 🙂
Great to have you sharing your journey on the narrow boat life. Yeah, it takes a bit of getting used to operating and talking on the camera essentially when there are other people around. You’ve just to got to block them out and most people are used to people doing this now so no biggie. For us non narrow boaters, it’s nice to sorta have an idea where you are by a map or something if we are not used to the area and I and others would like to know about your boat. You don’t necessarily need to give a boat tour but just the basic info. Likewise, we would like to know a bit about you. How in the world did you find your way to be living and navigating a narrow boat. I applaud your courage to take this on 👏🏻⭐️. Keep it up and look forward to more videos ❣️
Thank you! I’ve made a note of your comment as I’m going to talk about some of these things in future videos.
Nice to hear a lovely Midlands accent. Beautiful and interesting video Betty. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Great video Betty. I'm watching from the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, Australia. I follow a number of narrowboat vloggers. Everyone has their own presentation style. Yours will develop quickly, so don't worry. I liked your comment below about the narrowboat community being some sort of "alternative universe" where everyone helped each other. It certainly looks like that from here. You are a very fortunate bunch. I look forward to more. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Yes I met so many lovely people when I did my first two-week trip to bring the boat back. Even though I was doing most of the trip on my own it didn't feel like I was alone. Thanks for watching!
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. I also have coat envy, it looks warm.
Thanks, it's just a cheap Peter Storm one I got for hiking but it's very warm so I wear it all the time!
Come on Betty… do another video… you’re good at it!!! I have heaps of video yet not published it like you… I think you are going to inspire more people to show their side of life on the canals… well done and looking forward to more content
It's a bit scary putting yourself online to be honest. I filmed this as a test and wasn't sure if I should post it. I'm still in two minds about it but UA-cam does seem to be more of a positive place compared to other social media platforms like Twitter. People seem to be more friendly and encouraging here.
@@bettyonaboat There is a great following and lots of admiration and respect for soloists such as yourself.. pace yourself and I’m sure you’ll be a hit… just be prepared for plenty of attention and pats on the back.. do what’s comfortable in your own time and folks will understand and of course show great loyalty for your efforts… most of all, enjoy yourself and the experience
Just started watching you. You have given me the confidence to go back and live in my boat and deal with being alone and have people look at me. You’re one inspirational woman in my eyes!

Lovely video. I run up and down the canal between Stone and Stoke on Trent. Lovely canal side pub at Stone (Crown Wharf) where you can moor.
Head up this way sometime!
I was meant to go there last summer but had to take a detour due to a broken lock. Hopefully I will in future though!
@@bettyonaboat Did an 18k canal run today actually, and stopped off at the Crown for a drink. If you do venture up this way do say it would be awesome to see your boat :)!
Don't know if it would help with this situation but there is such a thing as anti-shake tripods I found out. Amazon has quite a selection. Maybe even a thick fluffy towel might work. Congrats on the rapid rise in subs and the thumbs up. You are on your way.
Thanks, I'll have to look into those. I basically had my iPhone attached to a GorillaPod that I kept moving around, but it's hard to adjust while also driving a boat!
I started out watching Narrowboat Will, Narrowboat Pirate, and Country House Gent, years before I bought my own boat. They taught me so much - and thankfully still do :) Good luck on your travels and hopefully more youtube content.
Yes, I've learnt a lot from watching other people's videos and I'm still learning now!
I've done that stretch a few times - kudos to you for doing it solo. The thought of buggering around alone untying, doing locks, having to buy my own beer is scary. Subscribed and can't wait for more
I'm not a fan of the double locks on that stretch if I'm honest. I much prefer single locks. I'm glad you liked the video though!

Great 1st video and some unique angles that add interest. I do suggest slowing down the panoramic shots to the point when you think they are extremely slow but they make watching a lot more comfortable. Great start!
