I made youtube videos about my life on the canals and also in my campervan and i deleted them all because i was not very confident on them. Youre doing great. Im enjoying your channel. Im slowly getting through all your videos. Keep up the good work. Hope you continue to post more videos.
Hello Betty, greetings from Canada! That was a lovely first video, thank you. When I first discovered UA-cam narrowboat videos last year I followed a bunch of them, at least a dozen. I've whittled that down to only two that I follow regularly. Shout out to The Narrowboat Pirate (Arrr!) and Narrowboat Life Unlocked. I realize you are new at this but I like your style, very calm and peaceful. I've subbed and am really looking forward to your adventures and watching your channel grow and flourish. I wish you all the best. Cheers! Mike from Canada.
A really engaging first video! The overall style was well put together and edited. The musical interludes worked well, and the drone shots were another highlight. As a would-be narrowboater, it's always wonderful to hear people's first impressions of narrowboating, so looking forward to more videos in the future.
you did great. confidence takes time and practice to build. practice builds confidence and so on. keep it up Betty you already have lots of experience that many people are going to appreciate, we all have to start somewhere it a learning curve and journey, share your journey with others it makes the journey a better adventure. Happy Boating.
Hi Betty how captivating your shy nieve raw video I follow many narrow boaters as I like the life the journey the remoteness you all have I am a trucker so I appreciate your feelings but I like your openness rawness it feels real for many of us none boaters how it would be for us perhaps I look forward to more content I hope you share your world your journey your adventure you come across great your accent adds realism loud clear and unscripted thank you and good luck Anth 😊
This might sound strange for a woman but the idea of being a trucker quite appeals to me. Going on journeys and seeing different places - it's like boating I suppose, but a lot faster! I'm glad you like the video anyway!
Hi Betty. Just started watching your channel. You are a natural on camera, and there is no showmanship. It's you being yourself, and that's rare on youtube. You are absolutely a success already so early on. Over 2k comments on your first video is so impressive. I have happily subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to watching your channel grow along with your confidence on camera. I think this is fast going to become my favourite narrowboating channel. Sending love and positivity your way x
Hi Betty, do not worry about the people around you, no one really bothers these days. It is a good thing you are doing and will create interest in the whole thing xxxxxxxx
Nice video and really enjoyed the drone shots. Views of the canal with the engine chugging away are very relaxing. I wouldn't worry too much, if you see someone talking to a camera these days you instantly assume its for UA-cam or similar. 😃
I like your natural, calm down to earth style, much better than most of the other similar channels out there, who shout loudly and clown around in an annoyingly desperate "please like me!" kind of way. Subbed! I hope you channel does well for you.
I started out watching Narrowboat Will, Narrowboat Pirate, and Country House Gent, years before I bought my own boat. They taught me so much - and thankfully still do :) Good luck on your travels and hopefully more youtube content.
Hi Betty. UA-cam recommended your channel. I have to say I really enjoyed your video. Its well edited, interesting to listen and watch and I found the whole 8 mins very calm and relaxing. Bravo for the excellent photography. Don't think of it as talking to the camera, just imagine us in front of you eager to hear what you have to say or to see what you want to show us. I'm looking forward to the next one already - I just subscribed.🙂
Your nerves were unjustified, you presented yourself and your story nicely. It was a refreshing change from UA-cam's usual random recommendations. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I envy the lifestyle, but wish you every luck with your adventures in that lovely little home on water. 👍
Hello my grandmother and many generations of her family worked & lived on the long boats they were based in the Wolverhampton area. I think some oh my grans side still live in the canals in that area. They were horse pulled barges it was a head way to earn a living but a very close community who looked out for each other. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to watching your videos
@@bettyonaboat yes it was hard I was told. If your boat was moored unless you were loading or unloading cargo you were not making money. Then came WW1 when all able men were called in to the services leaving the woman to look after the children maintain the boat look after the horses ( they came first if the horse went down so did the business ) my Nan lost two of her sibling to malnutrition bare in mind there was no welfare state in them days. Like you said it was different times & harder times but what surprised me is they never left the canals their life their community their happy place. And I hope it becomes your happy place. Ps if there’s any one from the water ways around Wolverhampton related to the Blunn family would like to say hello
Great video Betty. I'm watching from the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, Australia. I follow a number of narrowboat vloggers. Everyone has their own presentation style. Yours will develop quickly, so don't worry. I liked your comment below about the narrowboat community being some sort of "alternative universe" where everyone helped each other. It certainly looks like that from here. You are a very fortunate bunch. I look forward to more. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Yes I met so many lovely people when I did my first two-week trip to bring the boat back. Even though I was doing most of the trip on my own it didn't feel like I was alone. Thanks for watching!

This is really heart warming. In a world where everything seems to be getting crazier and more tech dependant its very important to remember the way of life that makes these sort of places and people so special. I'm from Ireland but I think we can all agree that these islands are some of the most beautiful places on earth. Thanks for uploading and God bless.
Greetings from Ireland Betty. That was blissful viewing. I grew up around canals here, and a long time ago did a carpentry course in which we built lough gates for the Royal Canal over here. Both it and the Grand Canal are two of Irelands longest and they both run through my County of Westmeath. They're still there, they haven't fallen down, so I can still boast that I had a hand in their construction. Always admired the life of boaters along the canals and your videos give a wonderful and entertaining insight into this. Keep them coming. 👏👏👏
That's really interesting, I know a fair bit about canals in England but I have to confess I don't know anything about canals in Ireland. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos so far! 🙂

Great to have you sharing your journey on the narrow boat life. Yeah, it takes a bit of getting used to operating and talking on the camera essentially when there are other people around. You’ve just to got to block them out and most people are used to people doing this now so no biggie. For us non narrow boaters, it’s nice to sorta have an idea where you are by a map or something if we are not used to the area and I and others would like to know about your boat. You don’t necessarily need to give a boat tour but just the basic info. Likewise, we would like to know a bit about you. How in the world did you find your way to be living and navigating a narrow boat. I applaud your courage to take this on 👏🏻⭐️. Keep it up and look forward to more videos ❣️

Keep making videos Betty. Those of us that watch, wish we had the courage to do what you are doing. We live the dream through you living the dream. I'm sure you will get more comfortable with filming as you continue and soon you will be putting out content as naturally as David Attenburgh. Be sure we will be entertained following along with you. x
You should just go for it and live your dream if you can! Life is too short not to!
Great first video well done you. Looking forward to watching your next one x
Thank you! 😀
Welcome Betty. Lovely to see someone taking a chance. For those of us around the world its interesting to hear canal history and their surrounds.
I love how people from around the world have ended up watching this. Thank you for letting me know I have an international viewer!
@@markhoyle2641 Thank you! ☺
This is very good to watch. What you have is a really engaging presentational style, without the brash forced persona of so many others. You are yourself and that is all you need.
Thank you, I didn't want to force it and pretend to be someone I'm not. 🙂
@@bettyonaboat
It works.
@@bettyonaboat Wisely so!
I made youtube videos about my life on the canals and also in my campervan and i deleted them all because i was not very confident on them. Youre doing great. Im enjoying your channel. Im slowly getting through all your videos.
Keep up the good work. Hope you continue to post more videos.
Oh no, it’s a shame you deleted them! I still find starting each video a bit scary but then I get into it. You should give it another go!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
A really engaging first video! The overall style was well put together and edited. The musical interludes worked well, and the drone shots were another highlight.
As a would-be narrowboater, it's always wonderful to hear people's first impressions of narrowboating, so looking forward to more videos in the future.
Thanks very much!
you did great. confidence takes time and practice to build. practice builds confidence and so on. keep it up Betty you already have lots of experience that many people are going to appreciate, we all have to start somewhere it a learning curve and journey, share your journey with others it makes the journey a better adventure. Happy Boating.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Thank you!
Nice to hear a lovely Midlands accent. Beautiful and interesting video Betty. Thoroughly enjoyed.
💚💚💚💚
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video (and my accent). 🙂
I really enjoyed your video and look forward to following your journeys. Best wishes and safe travels. 👍
Thank you!
Nice video and really enjoyed the drone shots. Views of the canal with the engine chugging away are very relaxing. I wouldn't worry too much, if you see someone talking to a camera these days you instantly assume its for UA-cam or similar. 😃
I'm glad you liked the video and found it relaxing! ☺
"God, there's someone coming", love it! You are so lucky having the canal network in the UK, and the opportunities that come with it.
Yes the UK canal network is great, I'm glad the canals were saved from being filled in!
I like your natural, calm down to earth style, much better than most of the other similar channels out there, who shout loudly and clown around in an annoyingly desperate "please like me!" kind of way. Subbed! I hope you channel does well for you.
Thank you, that's really kind of you to say!
I started out watching Narrowboat Will, Narrowboat Pirate, and Country House Gent, years before I bought my own boat. They taught me so much - and thankfully still do :) Good luck on your travels and hopefully more youtube content.
Yes, I've learnt a lot from watching other people's videos and I'm still learning now!
A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. I also have coat envy, it looks warm.
Thanks, it's just a cheap Peter Storm one I got for hiking but it's very warm so I wear it all the time!
What a charming first shot at your venture. I'm now subscribed. Best wishes.
Thank you and welcome aboard!
Your videos are authentic and you come accross very sincere and nice person :)
Thank you! ☺️
Thanks for subscribing and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I really enjoyed the filming/photography, I just wish someone else was doing the talking! 😂
Very well done Betty, great start, look forward to more in the future.
Thank you!
Your nerves were unjustified, you presented yourself and your story nicely. It was a refreshing change from UA-cam's usual random recommendations.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, I envy the lifestyle, but wish you every luck with your adventures in that lovely little home on water. 👍
Thank you very much for your kind words. ☺
Nice video Betty. Very well presented and I enjoyed watching it. Well done, and keep up the good work 😊
Thank you! 😊
Oh wow, you have such an interesting family history! I’d love to know what it was like back then and how different things were on the canals.
A perfectly lovely video, Betty, and well produced! Thanks for sharing a piece of your day to day with us😊
I'm glad you liked it!
Well done Betty. 1st steps. Excellent 😊
Thank you!
Really lovely and natural videos spoken from your heart Betty thank you, I look forward to your next adventure, stay safe and take care.
Thank you!
A really great first video and totally know what those first few video nerves feel like. It does get much easier the more you do so keep it up.
Happy to share some simple tips to help you. I’ve followed you on Instagram and will say hello there. I look forward to future trips and more about your boat adventures 😊
Thanks for the tips! 🙂
I was in my city one day and decided to get my phone out and video the marina, I did not have a plan or script so made it up as I went along. I was nervous about doing it, but decided to put it on my channel, I had some good comments. I like your style, very natural, I can only say don't try and change, be the way you are. Very well done, looking forward to following your cruise.
I'd been thinking about doing this for ages but I'm glad I've given it a go now. Well done to you for posting a video too!
Betty, you are a vision of beauty and loveliness. I enjoyed every moment. Thank you. 😊
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! ☺

@@DavidGraeberWasRightwhat a pointless and typically suspicious comment. Believe it or not, the vast majority of people aren't "creeps" or "perverts." What sad times we live in when such mindsets as yours are the norm.
@@DavidGraeberWasRight are you jealous or what?

Hey hey welcome Betty and love the video. You soon get more used to it like anything eh. Thanks for the video let’s go Betty on this new journey for you ❤🤘👍
I'm glad you liked it, I enjoyed making it! 🙂
Can't believe that's your first video - its very good! Loved the boat too... I'm having a 40 foot Beetle built (its taking ages though ☹) . I look forward to seeing more from you! 👍Cheers, Jeff.
I do like the 40ft ones and I’m jealous of you having one built from scratch! I’m the third owner of mine.
@@bettyonaboat Wow - your boat looks pretty new. I hope you're pleased with her? Buying from new is nice of course, and I'm documenting it on my channel - but its taking an age to complete and I still haven't got a completion-date. Looking forward to your next video 👍
@@Gladysthenarrowboat I do love my boat but it hasn't been without problems. Although I think that's the same with all boats. I'm currently replacing some of the subfloor following a plumbing leak and it has been a challenge! In fact, I'm going to take a look at your channel as it would be useful to see what Aintree Beetles look like at various stages of the build.
@@bettyonaboat Good to hear that you love the boat. Yeah, I think most boats have some issues now and then. I expect Gladys will have some snags to sort out! Please do look on my channel - I've issued several updates on the boat-build and also have visited Aintree Boats 3 times now - so if you haven't been there yourself, you'll get to see where your Beetle was made!
I really miss my time on a narrow boat. Best years of my life. Enjoy them betty. 👍⚒️
Thank you!
Betty, you are absolutely wonderful and it's a joy to watch your travel adventures. Thank you for taking the plunge with video making. There should be more content like this on UA-cam!
Thank you!
well done on your first video , you might feel a little awkward at first but please dont worry you were great , i think im going to love watching the channel grow good luck with your journey
Thank you, that's really nice of you to say! I'm hoping my confidence will improve.
Nice video....happy sailin...more plz🙃👍
I posted a second one yesterday!
What an utterly refreshing UA-cam experience! Please keep these videos up and perhaps get some friends involved too. Top notch!
They do often visit but I can't persuade any to be filmed!
I think that's true - you don't need to go to the other side of the world to see beautiful places!
I loved the justaposition of your navigating 220 year old canal boat technology with an iPhone and GPS. Don't be nervous about your presentation; you're nailing it.❤👍👍👍🇦🇺
It does amaze me how old the technology is, and it's mad that locks are still being used so long after they were built!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it's old and it did work? Then fix it up. Those lock gates don't need replacing as fast as smartphones do!
I've done that stretch a few times - kudos to you for doing it solo. The thought of buggering around alone untying, doing locks, having to buy my own beer is scary. Subscribed and can't wait for more
I'm not a fan of the double locks on that stretch if I'm honest. I much prefer single locks. I'm glad you liked the video though!
Absolutely love the videos so far!
Thank you! 😀
You're a natural & really well done fighting the nerves & getting your vlog done! I'm the same, been thinking of vlogging for years but not quite found the confidence - but you've shown it can be done if I gave it ago! 😅 Will be tuning in for your videos 🤗😀
I was thinking about it for ages too, just give it a go!
Loved all of this. An actual genuine person just enjoying life. Keep it up Betty!
Thank you!
Quite simply wonderful to watch 😊
Thank you. ☺
Thank you! I’ve made a note of your comment as I’m going to talk about some of these things in future videos.
As some of the older narrowboaters leave "The cut", new boaters arrive to take their places. Some, like you, decide to do videos. Welcome to the You Tube community. Every other narrowboat vlogger started at this point. Each has or had their own view of the narrowboat life and you will soon find yours. Nervous be damned. That is just a video camera in front of you an IT CAN BE EDITED! Mistakes and blunders will be made...and save them as they make a great retrospective a few years on. I have followed several narrowboat vloggers for several years now and yours will be the first that I have followed, literally , since day one! Have at it! I live in Canada and where I live we have a Trent Canal of our own!
Thank you! I think you're right, I've decided just to film and see what happens rather than try to do perfect videos.
NB Here!
Oh sublime.
I grew up in the Fens on boats. Your presentation suits your craft perfectly.
No need to complicate anything, the world is complicated enough.
In we go.....
the cut to the drone footage was beautifully executed
Thank you, I went up and down a few times to film it at different angles!
