It encapsulates a certain period of 90s so well that it almost makes me cry. Im sure i'm not alone here, if you lived through those times you know what memories it brings.
Yeah. In fact it was one of the first tunes I searched for. I think "Standing around a broken telephone booth with money in my hand" and Tonic "If you could only see" were both on some free CD I got from a magazine back then. Good times...
This song came out when I was a sophomore or junior in HS. Takes me back to the 90's. Heard this, and Doll Parts, while watching Halt and Catch Fire. Had to come here for a listen.
She only COMES when she's on top. COMES COMES COMES COMES COMES COMES COMES. I was a teenager when this song debuted. It really burns me that they censored this amazing song!!!!
Generation X the last great generation for ANYTHING, especially music! Wtf do the millennials have in the way of music??? All they are known for is their Narcissism, Entitlement & that Smug look on their "I was given everything in life" face!
@@imkitti1942 Exactly what the Boomers said about Gen X. Just not on social media. When this came out in 1993 (at least in the US) it was considered "alternative" music and wasn't very main stream (hair metal, mariah carey, whitney houston were ubiquitous). MTV played this on 120 Minutes or you could hear it on college radio. Good music. is out there. You just won't have it spoon fed to you - now or in the mythical 80s / 90s.
1988-1992, pre britpop and lad mags and spice girls ... these 4 years were a golden age fro me - Smiths, James, Sundays, Chapterhouse, Ride, Adorable, Wedding Present, JAMC, Stone Roses, Mondays, Primal Scream, Pale Saints, Wonder Stuff, Kingmaker, Slowdive - this song is later, but has the spirit. For me it's a period which feels the way my parents described the mid-60's, and we will never see either of their likes again.
Second verse always makes me tear thinking of the love of my life leaving me…still think of her till this day. I don’t think I’ll ever see her beautiful face again.
This video is the most unique I've ever seen. I heard "Ring the Bells" on an X-Files episode, and looked up James. Thank God. This video is incredible. The first time I saw, it was just shocked. I've watched it about 50 times since. It helps that Tim Booth is a total fox with a killer voice in that raggedy, hideous, Goodwill-looking dress. He's so wild and intense looking in this video. It's perfect.
Watched the Pie films merely for the adult content when i was around 12, but then rewatched them after a few years and... It's so hard to explain! How could a few films make you feel nostalgic for the time you weren't even present in? I'm a 2000s guy and can only wish i was a teen in the 90s. Even so, this song and the movies make me all teary as if i was there living the moments. GREAT MOVIES AND GREAT SONG.
Quite possibly one of the best videos ever made! Haven’t heard this song since boot camp at SUNY Maritime, fall of ‘93. Here I am almost 30 years later wishing we could all go back to that time
I LOVE this song, and they were WAY underrated. NEVER CHANGE THE WORDS for NO ONE benefits. The only problem with the song is that it's NOT long enough!
"never change the words for no one benefits". This song has a version 2 and 3 with lyric differences between them (just 1 word). V2 - "only sings when she's on top" V3 - "only comes when she's on top"
Watch the live version, she comes on top there lol. From attending over 100 concerts, umpteen t in the parks and glastonburys, they remain in the top 3 best live acts I have seen.A band that produced timeless tracks such as born of frustration, tomorrow and say something, they wouldnt be out of place in the charts of today. One of the most unconventional (ok - bizzare) mainstream music videos that I've ever witnessed, but actually it had me laughing uncontrollably, cause I know what they are referring to. These guys are amazing artist with zany personalities, cause it takes a lot of guts to do what they are doing on video, & the song of course is an unforgettable classic.
I first heard, or recognized this song in the American Pie soundtrack. I liked it at the time but forgot about it til I saw the movie again years later. Then I had to find out who it was. Great song.
My dads favourite band. Every time I think of/hear his song I get the urge to dance and I do - in typical James fashion! Yes I may get weird looks, or people may laugh but the least I can do is express myself to music I love or hear; and I may have an impact on other people’s lives (“remember that guy who started dancing like a maniac in the tube station” “remember that guy who started dancing in Starbucks”) we are human and when you get the urge to dance and express yourself then do it! For yourself more than anyone - you will feel fantastic (and only slightly embarrassed) but own it! Some people might even join in!

Yes I thought the same...very annoying!!!
That's one thing teenagers seem to be obsessed with.
Your right
That's fucked up
Fuck yeah!
Version 3 is what you want.
I am a metal head from the 80s. When I told my band we needed to cover this song, they looked at me funny.
I got new friends.
lol
They must be gald you left......
Good
Or they dumped you? Latter being the IRL story
This song has a certain power to it
Finally found this song and listened to it 10 times straight and so did my neighbors.
Amen!
Bet they threw something at your window so they can listen to it more louder
I did the same , my neighbours even came too my door too listen
lol
haha boss! thats the spirit ;D
Ah fuck, the nineties. The decade that was.

I’m sorry.
More brilliance. Love the wit and the lyrics and Tim's voice is so phenomenal when he hits the high note it is a wonderous thing.
I lost my brother 2 years ago, it was one of his favourite songs and it’s the ring tone on my phone ❤️

Still sounds so wonderful now in 2022.
This fills a hole that I 've had since the 80's. It's very intimate and personal. This song makes me smile and cry at the same time.
Here after hearing it in Bear S03's final episode at the end! What a song❤
YES..downloaded immediately..dont have a CD player to play my CD

:) I never even knew who he was until like the last 2 songs haha!
Are you alive??
I love you and as usual I'm skint and can't afford to see you in Glasgow but will always be a fan ❤
The editing on this is terrific! I love Tim's expressions: the edge of madness angst, the yearning and desire. Or is that me?
