      Hi Greg! Yes, they are! It was supposed to be a short 20 minute, quick & easy video but they had so much knowledge to pass on that it turned into a 2 hour tour!
      Of course, I edited things out when we went off topic but all the important stuff is all there.

    Excellent video! I've wondered what Epicenter was like, what they produced, their methods etc etc. Really nice to see Ellen and Freddy among their trees., My idea is to be able to grow trees which can be kept compact (8' to 10" high) in a cooler climate which together produce year round or as close to that as possible. How can I get hold of a Bird Avenue?!

      Sounds like a plan! You can order trees from Epicenter for pick up or shipped to you in the first week of January.

    Thanks for sharing. 👍 They're the reason I started my avocado breeding program here in the 831 (Salinas, Watsonville & Santa Cruz) after I discovered that they would strain hunt & propagate local avocado varities. I've gotten Green Golds, GEMs, and Phoenix(Carmens) from them.✌️🥑

    Great to see these people spreading avocado diversity for backyard growers. It's a pity they don't like bacons though. I guess with the amount of choice they have, they might find them a little bland. However I think they are great for such an early avocado. I have a bacon but it's on a reed rootstock and they are very tasty with a buttery and creamy texture. Everyone I give them to loves them.

    • @growyourownavocados
      @growyourownavocados  6 днів тому +2

      I agree with you. Taste buds are very individual. Some people are surprised that I like Bacon and I explain that I like them because they taste nothing like Hass like the difference between vanilla and chocolate. I am growing Jim Bacon. I love the season and the flavor and especially that the flavor is very unique just like different types of music there is something for everybody in avocados too.
      In my cross-pollination video in Clayton they have Hass & Bacon. The owners tell me most people prefer their Bacon.

    Am I right by thinking that most likely the best place to buy avocado trees is buying at a local nursery? Santa Cruz is way cooler than where I am…I live in the San Gabriel valley and the temperature during the summer can get up to 105 degrees…all I see around is hass avocado trees all over the place…

    • @growyourownavocados
      @growyourownavocados  6 днів тому

      I have the best results when I buy trees from nurseries with my same temperatures as me because I get heatwaves with a week of 110. I would recommend buying locally because of your temps. I grew up in SVG and I remember those summers which are even hotter now. Yes, unfortunately heat stress kills a lot of new and young trees. I use a shade cloth or umbrella for the first few summers if they are not getting shade from structures.
      Of course with rare varieties you have to get them where and when you can. Unfortunately with cados often times they do die in which case I recommend buying two.
