  • I grew perilla which is in the mint family for eating as a wrap. I also cook with the leaves and seeds of this plant. The taste isn't menthol and has only a slight mint taste. It's very soothing as a tea.

The Red Shiso plant does grow as mint does , and for my own experience it does better out of a flowerpot. If you can just give a try . Tea is delicious. :) chilled .

V, can you tell me what you do to make your perilla grow so well? I remember a while back that I saw your shiso patch. Mine grow in pots but the minute I put them in the ground they die. Too much water? Not enough water? I have a friend who lives in a wet, hot, sunny place and his grows well. I live in a hot, humid sunny place so I water it well but they die the minute they hit the ground. Some advice would be helpful. I can't find your video of your shiso. Got a link? I want to watch it again. Thanks!

+fattymoko The plants love wet soil. Had some I thought died before I could transplant them. Had them in a container with hardly any soil because I had dug them up form my mother's garden to put into mine. The container got watered by accident (I left it where the sprinkler could reach it). The plants came back to life and I transplanted them later.
Lots and lot so water, soil with lots peat moss (already soaked) might make a difference.
Earlier this year I tried to get some growing from seed. It was probably too cold then but now I'll try again. Before I started with those transplants and they self seeded for years.

I never add any sweeteners to my hot teas. So it's better than anything sugary.
