Love this advice. I thought I got rid of my OCD when I finally stopped doing my tics, only for my obsessions to resurface years later with a different theme (I ended up getting obsessed with truth instead of symmetry). In the end, it really is just about letting the thoughts come and go; it's the same shit in a different wrapper.

My first theme was harm ocd and then every other theme I also had and I overcame them all and then I was free from it for a few months and it came back with POCD and harm but mainly POCD. Yeah, I started suffering from OCD in high school (that's what I remember anyways) and eventually managed to break it and went a few years without. Recently it's come back with a vengeance about things much further in the future than just a day or a week or two. I've found it's a lot more difficult to deal with this time because the time scale of my subjects is so much longer.
I really appreciate your videos as I try to overcome this again.

H! I was wondering if you could do an ERP video for constant existential thoughts? Especially due to derealization/depersonalization “What if I’m not real, what if nothing here is real, even this video, what if this is a figment of my imagination” etc! This is something I’ve been having a real hard time with and even had to start medication and mindfulness to kinda ease the symptoms. But it’s still overwhelming 24/7! Thanks!

Hi Katie, I would love to learn more about why doing an illogical, unnatural compulsion makes me feel so detached from everything. It feels as though nothing in my life matters anymore and I don’t feel like myself. Is this normal for ocd? Am I experiencing something that’s permanent? If so I’m doomed because without my values and goals and feeling like myself in life. It’s not okay!

I'm not an expert, but I imagine anyone who says that probably has no experience.
When I tried to explain to my friend, how annoying it is to feel like I have to check the lock or doors to ensure they're properly closed and end up doing it multiple times his response was, "At least you're always sure and effective." Or something like that. He doesn't deal with it though, I think it's difficult for people who haven't suffered with it or haven't studied it to really understand how disadvantageous it really can be.

    Hi Katie,
A lot to go over but hang with me.
I have had severe Contamination OCD most of my life. About 6 months ago I went through an ERP Intensive outpatient program which has tremendously helped my condition. That said, I still have 1 intrusive thought that I'm not sure how to deal with it. While playing golf I had to use the restroom. Of course the only option a port a potty. Reluctantly I went into the structure and urinated. However there was a pool of pee on the floor. Whe urinating some of my pee hit the puddle of pee which lightly spashed pee droplets onto my golf shoes. As a result I am afraid to touch the laces on my golf shoes. I had addressed this months ago with ERP (which helped short term) but now the thought is haunting me knowing that I will be golfing soon. I'm struggling between washing my shoelaces (which may be considered avoidance) or just handling the laces and living with the uncertainty of Contamination?
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I will explain what that means, on my mind I have a thought, when it comes I feel uncomfortable and I should breath deeply, I am afraid that if I keep my breath or will not breath normally doing it on purpose it will mean that I relate it to my thought and it will mean that I do it on purpose. I am afraid of doing it on purpose cause when thought comes I am afraid to do smth not right with breathing cause it will definitely mean that I am bad person as my thought is real and realated this topic, I am afraid to respond on wrong way. And on my mind comes doubts about it. I call this an intrusive feeling. Manage it by letting it be there and redirecting your attention. If you don't make it mean anything or try to avoid your body will slowly adapt and your brain will work out it doesn't need to keep firing up those anxiety chemicals.

I can't say for sure but what I often see is that when OCD thinks you might be onto it and starting to try and challenge it, it will do everything in it's power to keep you stuck - like confusing you by changing themes. So maybe see this as a triumph - you have got the OCD running scared! Now is the time to keep going with acting against your OCD and practicing doing things differently.

A typical ERP to this would be to deliberately write down one of your feared thoughts and read aloud. I'm don't know if you're religious but what helps me is reminding myself that only God has the power to cause anything to happen. And that your thoughts don't define who you are. The very fact that you feel terrible and guilty for the thoughts shows that. God knows your heart and that you mean no one harm. Just continue to focus on accepting your thoughts feelings etc, practice ERP as much as you can and you'll learn in the process that doing compulsions prevents nothing. Don't give up!
