Ann Wilson is indelibly stamped on this song, and as good as Floor is she doesn't hold a candle to Heart's definitive version. That's not a knock of Floor, but there are some songs that no cover will ever surpass the original and this is one of them.
Actually, Heart's version is a cover too. The original version is by I-Ten (1983)
@@paulvanwouwen1573 Yes but Heart's is the definitive version and most people consider it the original because A) no one had ever heard of the song before Heart released it, and B) Heart changed the lyrics and the artists who have covered it since then used Heart's lyrics.
100% agree. Floor is great but there is no comparison. This song is Ann's.
Actually Ann Wilson commented on Floor's first time she sung this song when she was still in After forever. Ann said how amazing it was. Also your reacting to a less live studio version of Heart Alone nor was it even there song originally it was a group called i-ten. I agree Heart was a great band and Ann wilson has some pipes but Floor Jansen was in a band aged 16 Floor trained at a school of rock and trained in theatre and classical music with Opera training. Floor can hits some seriously high notes higher then what's heard on this song. Floor can growl and sing in many different genre's Floor can sing in many languages like Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and English. In the end no matter who you prefer just remember Floor loves Ann Wilson like you may do and Ann Wilson likes Floor so respect to them both.
None of that really matters other than he compared the two and picked one he liked better. I-Ten did write and record Alone first but it's not even the same lyrics or song structure as what Heart turned it into. And that scream that Floor did? That was 100% Ann Wilson's ad-lib that Floor was emulating. The bottom line is that Floor is awesome and she did a great cover version of this song, but the song itself will always be Ann Wilson's. Wilson in her prime was without a doubt the greatest female hard rock vocalist we've had; Floor will end up being one of the greats as well and hopefully one day she'll have a classic like "Alone" that everyone will identify with her.
Floor is great and Ann loves her just like many of us do. But IMO there is no comparison between the Heart version and Floor's cover, Heart's is a classic that has been and will continue to be covered hundreds of times and none of the covers will measure up to Heart. Ann's voice is as unique as it is strong, and her phrasing is incredible. To me this is the gold standard of rock ballads. Floor might be the only female rocker who comes close to Ann when she was in her prime but I have yet to hear anyone who matches or surpasses her. She is a legend.
Don't think i heard the answer to the question from you . Who did the song better and who cares what language she can sing it in. Not to mention who's song it was originaly. Think it's clear she's your girl (floor ) . So the question is can YOU be objective . I'm thinkin no. So i will help you . Heart crushed it . Ann is a musical giant . And the interpretation was very slow ,annoyingly slow. Finally , the tech equipment is light years ahead of Ann's time , yet it did not help her in the contest, (so to speak).

I just stated Anne made comment to how well Floor performed Alone when she was in her first band After Forever. Yes i love Floor's talent but i was also a big Heart fan back in the eighties. Know one is comparing one to be better then the other but you. So take a chill pill and just enjoy music like much of us normal people do. I prefer the original. Ann Wilson’s voice even in lower register has a rich quality. Even her speaking voice is beautiful.
Totally and someone said video by Heart vs live by Floor mattered. We know Ann Wilson sounded live just as strong without autotune as "Alone" by Heart predates it. Reverb for sure. Clearly, I can hear the autotune in Floor Jenson's version.
Well said. Ann's voice can be calming and nurturing one minute and lethal the next. And as she's gotten older her low register has gotten more rich and soulful.
One thing about Floor that always struck me: A lot of singers will do a phrase, like maybe a belt, and they'll sort of let it trail off naturally as they use breath. It can still sound really good...That's not what she's doing. The phrase ends when she wants it to, at the volume she wants it to, with whatever tonal quality she wants to give it, and she is in complete control of how and where it starts and how and where it ends all the way through...It's kinda hard to believe...

Floor is awesome but this is one of those songs that will always be Ann's. I'm not sure anyone could ever match the emotion Ann puts into it, and no one (not even Floor) can wail like Ann did in her prime.
In my opinion no one compares to Ann. I've seen Heart in concert and both Ann and Nancy put on a phenomenal show.

This video barely shows the Magnificent Ann Wilson singing- because back then she was stupidly dogged for not being super skinny. Caused her a lot of stress. Bizarre standards to be sure.

Floor is great, but I agree Ann's version is THE version. I'm not sure if we'll ever have a singer who can match Ann Wilson in her prime. The first time I ever heard Heart live I was shocked by how incredible Ann was -- to this day it's the best live vocal performance I've ever seen.
@@MugnifyRTS Floor is great -- but Ann in her prime was pretty untouchable, even by Floor. There is a live version of "Unchained Melody" by Heart on UA-cam (sounds lame, but it's one of the most incredible vocal performances I've heard) that you should check out. It will give you an idea of just how great Ann was in her prime. It's not just her range, but her phrasing and everything else that, all together, make Ann in a tier by herself.

Most people don't know that because i-Ten's version didn't get airplay and actually has different lyrics in the chorus and a different arrangement. I consider Heart's version the original because their arrangement is different and it was a throw away album track until Heart recorded it. I actually like the i-Ten version of the song, but if it hadn't been for Heart none of us would be talking about the song right now.
I agree with what you said, never heard of Floor, she did a nice job, totally different, to each his own. I think you should check out a lot more Heart, they were the first female rock band I heard and loved them, Ann Wilson is one of the best female singers around, they have a long history. Try going back and listening to early Heart, Barracuda, Magic Man etc are some early songs, I think you will really enjoy them and hear both Ann and Nancy's true talent. Also to say I enjoy your channel, you are also kind and uplifting. Thanks for postive energy.

Well, as an 55 Yrs old Metal&Rockhead, the Answer is easy. Both Covers are great. Hearts Alone were an Hym for us mainstream Hair Bombast Rock Lovers back then. I had it on repeat while doing Paragliding back in early 90s and i wont go into detail of the Feelings up there:).
Floor does an very itimate and slowed Down Interpretation, using Her incredible Voice simply sending Shivers down my old Spine. And it was released just in Covid Times, as me and surely other Folks were in need of an slowed down, dreamy and reassuring Tune, even when its aboput simping for someone:) It fits both perfect in Time an Place .

No but the original version had different lyrics and the chorus structure was different. Heart modified it to the version they performed which Floor covered, and that is the definitive version everyone knows. So even though they didn't write it, it's a Heart song and will always be identified with them.

No, that's the speed of the song. Floor slowed it down. It's supposed to be a rock ballad like Heart performed, not a Celine Dion-esque torch song like Floor's cover.

This is one of Floor's just for fun home recordings during covid, putting her own style to the song. Put her on stage with Nightwish live and doing the same type version as Anne Wilson did here. I know for a fact it would be a different story. Ann Wilson's too short and doesn't have the stage presence Floor does. LOL

I did not like floors version. Her voice was to controlled, and seemed to cause the emotions to be flat. I think floor is a great vocalist, but there seems to be something lacking in her presentation. Check out Heart's song, Crazy on you. Awesome acoustic links right off the start, and becomes a driving great rock song!

The Ann Wilson original (Heart) is the best version and it's not close. Floor is great and she did a good job, but she copied Ann's ad libs note for note and did nothing original with it. The original (in it's power ballad form) was one of those songs that no one could get enough of when it first came out, and Wilson's vocals are absolutely perfect not only in pitch but in conveying the emotion of the song. IMO nothing will ever top Heart's version of this song. And I can guarantee you Floor would say the say thing.

Floor is a glorified karaoke singer . She sings thoumas songs he writes in nightwish and covers of other people songs very very good , but she can’t write a hit or a great song and come up with her own melody for nothing .
