  • Massive attacks by Ukrainian drones flooded the skies of Southern Russia overnight, leaving a wake of devastation across the entire region, as airfields, refineries, and fuel depots ablaze. Russia is desperate for an end to the war, and Putin is seeking to enflame tensions in the Koreas to create diplomatic leverage against the west for an end to this war. Meanwhile Ukrainian forces are hammering the Russians even harder in Vovchansk, with Russia taking extremely high losses.

    I'm with Enforcer Matt on Putin's strategy with NK; and I would add a new angle to it: In Putin's mind, if a NK/SK war started, China would be forced to back NK, as NK is a huge Chinese investment, far more so than a Russian investment. Russia would not need to give NK anything. It would distract the world away from Ukraine, PLUS it would draw China into the Korean conflict, which is a great positive for Putin, who sees China as a perpetually growing threat.

      GOOD POINT.... or it could backfire & China does the opposite. FORCE NK to get in line & RUSSIA ends up all alone.

    The USB sticks sent to North Korea are typically full of South Korean TV shows and movies. They are viewed on portable devices like DVD players with an attached screen and media players with USB ports.
    Believe it or not K-dramas are a huge thing in N Korea. To the point you can go to prison for life for having one of those USB sticks, but people are still desperate for them.

There are stories of humour being used, and six months later the "Professionals" (shrinks!) come in to help the responders cope. After which, a beer session and gallows humour flowed again, to deal with the idiot professionals.

    The question of success vs failure with the U.S. putting boots on the ground really comes down to whether soldiers will be allowed to really fight. If they have one hand tied behind their back, or are only halfway committed like how the U.S. approached Vietnam, then it will be a disaster.

      @@angrydoggy9170 Yeah, but actually I was talking about the potential for issues coming up in Korea. Still, in Ukraine or in Korea, this idea that you can't shoot back until the enemy has crossed all these red lines, and putting lots of restrictions on the troops just runs up the number of casualties.
      Imagine if Ukraine had the level of support (without all the restrictions) which it now enjoys - this would have been a much shorter war. Some documentaries about Vietnam say that the U.S. was fighting with a hand tied behind its back, which is why the Vietnam war was such a disaster.
      I guess my point is: you can't go to war while worrying about pissing off the enemy. If you're going to fight, then fight the best you can. Otherwise, either negotiate or surrender.

    Russia's glide bombs are no where near as accurate as the US ones. They typically have a scatter of 30-60 feet or more. Most of their cruise missiles and such have a similar accuracy. Even their surface to air missiles are MUCH larger than the US equivalent because they have to use MUCH larger warheads. They US has been removing warheads in some of their missiles because they are so accurate. They can even target specific things on the aircraft.
    Just compare the damage to that building to the one they hit with something like 6 Small Diameter Bombs (GBU-39b I think). All 6 hit the building at very specific locations and despite them having a warhead that is 93 kg (129 kg bomb) they did more damage. The Fab 3000 has a 1465 kg warhead (2983 kg bomb). That is almost 16x more explosives and 23x larger bomb. Ukraine can put something like 12 of these on an aircraft, but Russia can only carry 2 Fab 3000 at most. The Russian bomb would need a direct hit to come have more damage, and not by much. Most the Fab-3000 would be more effective against underground bunker or assets in the basement. We have an SDB 2 that is even better. This is us just sending more old junk to Ukraine.
    And BTW that A-50 was shot down by a Patriot missile. They have a longer range than what is made public, but I have not heard anything reliable on just how far it is.

    The Korean war was a UN police action not just an American war, also the Americans did supply the bulk of fighting forces. If you look at just Chinese causalities Chinese forces: over 110,000 killed and 380,000 wounded, not including North Korean killed; it was extremely successful. The north Koreans nearly drove the UN forces off the peninsula. Also Japan and South Korea are a very formidable force now, even with Russian help they could easily hold their own without US help.

    It is standard procedure to cool the fire with water even though water will not put the fire out. Firefighters use water to fight oil well fires to cool the flames, reduce the heat impact on nearby structures, and eliminate radiant heat.

    You can use water, but you need to mist it heavily over the fuel fire to try and sap heat and oxygen away from the fire. If you just spray it the water will spread the fire as the water is heavier... and then it sinks to the bottom. Foam is better as it would sit on top of the fuel and choke out the oxygen heavily. You do need a lot of foam, but most cities in the US has a truck that can dispense foam (as well as military bases... my brother was a fire fighter in the air force). They use it on chemical and fuel fires as well as on air fields and fuel storage. Russia's fire fighting looks pretty bad. They do not have enough fire trucks nor firemen not the right equipment to fight these fires.
    The odd thing is the US navy had such good fire fighting and damage control that Japan thought they had destroyed several ships but they turned out saving the ship, repairing them, and sending them back into combat. They actually sank very few important ships. Combine this with the US's manufacturing capabilities and Japan did not stand a chance.

    the thing is this. the ussians were so desperate to protect that kirche bridge that they pulled air defense out from other places. ukraine hasnt attacked the bridge so far, even if it is well within their strike range. its either because the US told them that that is something they cant do, or else support gets cut, or because the bridge itself is now over protected. so they keep teh bridge and the southern front soldires keep getting fed and supplied, but at the cost of exposing huge areas in russia to attacks. the reason russia became such a power in surface to air systems was because during the cold war trhey were afraid that their huge size would make attacking it too easy . it was seen as cheaper to set up a SAM battery with about 100 guys, vs. building a full airbase with thousands. by the 60s they relied on that much more than their interception force, which they reserved for front line areas... now they dont have the fighters to protect and also they moved all teh air defense away from the cities . as a result, russians dont get bombed by fighter jets, (which may change soon..) and the bridge doesnt get attacked but everything else is wide open.

    I'm not sure what you mean by gas prices going up in the US because of RUSSIAN shortages, but I'm hoping its not because refiners in the USA sold RUSSIA our gasoline and diesel. That would be undermining everything UKRAINE is trying to do here... We don't want it to be more EXPENSIVE for Russia to move troops and tanks into Ukraine, we want it to be IMPOSSIBLE. And that goes for our refineries selling it to anyone else who then sold it to Russia. Not long ago it was ILLEGAL for oil companies to sell our oil to ANY other countries, they managed to convince us that we had so much they needed to sell the EXCESS because it was down to $30 a barrel, OBVIOUSLY we don't have that excess NOW or gas wouldn't be $3-$4 a gallon. Yet they are STILL selling it overseas. Which of course is what they intended all along when they got us to allow them to repeal that law. Much of this oil is being drilled on land that belongs to the US citizens in offshore or government lands in Alaska and other states and NONE of that should be allowed to be sold to anyone but Americans.

    • @angrydoggy9170
      @angrydoggy9170 3 місяці тому

      Oil prices are determined by the global supply and demand, not by what a country can produce itself. So even if the US increases its production it won’t affect the price that much, unless they can flood the global market. But that would cause some significant political and economic issues.

    • @kingranches
      @kingranches 3 місяці тому

      @@angrydoggy9170 I think you missed my point. In the past our oil couldn’t be sold or shipped outside the USA which means that what was happening outside the USA made no difference at all, the price fluctuated based on OUR supply and demand and we now have more than enough oil to supply ourselves, or at least we would IF awe’s never sold it outside the USA for more money. Making our oil, more expensive for us. That’s all I was saying. But MOST importantly if what Ukraine is doing is causing a shortage not just in Russia but in Russias Allies like INDIA then we shouldn’t COUNTER the situation Ukraine is causing by putting more refined oil INTO that world market KNOWING that it will find its way to Russia.

    • @jackjohnson291

      @angrydoggy9170 3 місяці тому

      @@kingranches The ban on exporting crude didn’t reduce the cost of refined products. Banning exports of crude will not reduce the prices for consumers. Lifting the ban benefits the US economy as it is now a net exporter, meaning its selling more than it imports. The US is currently exporting the oil it can’t refine itself (not all crude is the same). Banning exports now would result in the US having to reduce production of crude (light oils) and turn it into a net importer. The only way to decrease the prices at the pump would be to lower taxes or direct subsidies. Prices didn’t rise because the export ban on crude was lifted, but by global demand. Another option would be leaving the global market, but that would basically destroy the US economy.

    • @jackjohnson291
      @jackjohnson291 3 місяці тому

      @@angrydoggy9170 I find the notion of exporting crude that we cannot refine ourselves to be quite silly. If someone else can refine or use it, we certainly can too. Investments and red tape… two things that can be on the road tomorrow by two strokes of a pen. Yes, it takes time and a favorable government, but this should have been done decades ago.
      We continue to cut our legs out from under ourselves when it comes to industries, and now that we’re potentially looking at war, it’s proving to be a bigger and bigger mistake. We ship off our production capacity to countries who aren’t even our allies. It’s ridiculous.
      While I’d prefer Americans use American petroleum, I’m not entirely against exports. I am entirely against imports and not for selfish reasons.

    And the Korean war was a political war. They heavily restricted what could be targeted... especially when it came to cities. North Korea would just move their manufacturing and SAMs into the cities so they could not be hit. China also poured a ton into this war and both China and North Korea had no problems with a 20 to 1 kill ratio. They knew the US public would not accept the US losses after a while no matter how many of the enemy was taken out.
    From what I understand the North Koreans were placing mines on the border and went a bit too far. North Korea has little they can take on South Korea other than lots of really bad artillery and unguided missile barrages and land mines. Their air force is horrible. Their navy is pretty old, but at least better than their air force. Their troops are under trained and under equipped. They have no body armor or night vision goggles. They likely do not even have enough rifles for all their troops. The only threat they really have is their nukes. This conflict would not be anything like the old Korean War.
    The USB sticks have American modern music on them. It is just a joke basically. There is a pretty big black market trade along the border with China and they are more likely to use US dollars than anything else. And a lot of the people in the work camps are actually... leased out to mostly Russia and some in China to work in factories and the money goes to the North Korean government.

    I said this before, I'll say it again. Nuclear deterrence is based on the assumption that all players, all participants are 'rational' actors, important becasue one opponents move should be interpretable by the other side to avoid misunderstandings or logical holes. So the last thing you do is change from a defensive no first strike to a first strike position AND ADVERTISE IT! All that does is gets the other 8 nuclear nations on Earth to reevaluate you from being a latent threat with a porcupine defense to an imminent threat! Thats NOT GOOD! Plus becasue you were irrational by telling everyone you are changing stance, then they will assume 'irrational actor changing to first strike policy' THATS WORSE!

      We can go back and forth on it, but the only way to know who’s right is for us to just wait and see. We cannot allow the irrational behavior of a despot to rock our ship or reasoning.

      Absolutely. The west needs to enforce a no tolerance policy against war within their regions. Putin wouldn't stand a chance starting a war in Ukraine then, as all the allies would pour into the country helping Ukraine at an instant. The kind of hesitation that EU did was the same kind of weakness that allowed Hitler to expand his territories.

      @@yourcrazybear Agreed, France and Germany signed the Minsk agreements without the UK providing Ukraine with a security agreement. That was on paper and Putin ripped up the Minsk agreements because he knew Fance and Germany were going to do nothing about it. In secret the UK knew Putins plans and started arming Ukraine because we could see what was about to happen.

      They've been hitting close to 50 a day for a while now. The Ukrainians aren't just stopping the meatwaves. They're working on other things at the same time, like artillery, air defense assets, and economic assets inside Russia. Russia's fighting battles, Ukraine is fighting a war.

      I was less than a couple miles away when they tested the first MOAB. It about blew all of the windows out of my house. It was INSANE, and we were accustomed to regular live ammunition use, bombing, strafing runs, etc..
