Wow, what a treat to stumble on to this! I’ve been a big Dan Hicks fan for around 50 years now, and can’t think of anybody that could match him in the combination of musicianship, humor, and originality. Well, maybe Paul Rogers of Those Darn Accordions, who met up to play with Dan for years in the Christmas Jug Band…he’s pretty close (and still with us, thankfully). Anyway, thanks so much for posting this concert video!
My brother turned me on to Dan in 76. He battled cancer from 8 years old tell he passed at 23. The joy Last Train to Hicksville brought to him was priceless. I still have the album, mint condition. The joy it brings me is immeasurable. Thank you Dan and the band.
Dan spent most of his years at the Home of Happy Feet. No artist matched him in humor between songs except for John Prine, but they were clearly different. Perhaps kindred spirits and playing together in the fun corner of heaven.
I agree . He did such a great job of surreptitously passing on to the dwindling generation to come , the joy of swing . RIP Dan Hicks for amalgamating all the music you'd been exposed to over the years into something the public (at large) paid little attention to _ _ but to your fans _ _ you're still the greatest . Thanks again for visiting here .
truly a loss to the music world of merica...thee greatest unknown in town. loved showcaseing his stuff in 15 different factories i visited. always unknown until i turned on the tunes...people responded well 100 % to the level of fresh notes they were exposed to. RIP Mr Hicks you were a great ice breaker...fun jazz.
I had the pleasure of seeing Dan Hicks on four occasions. The first was at "In the Alley,' Escondido, Ca in 1971 and the last was at this show. I remember sitting in the kitchen near the refrigerator. Talk about an intimate venue.
An entertainer’s entertainer, a songwriters songwriter I wish things could last forever. Thanks Dan you were one of a kind Richard wake county California.
I never saw Dan in the 60's, but I did see several shows with different musicians, one very shortly before he died. He was always intelligent, funny and a great musician.
So smooth, relaxed, funny, never know HOW good dan hicks music is, gives me a idea of another world with nice peoples that laugh, gives love, be happy etc. Not the crazy world today with bad+ cruel looks over their masks ...
Sheer Mastery! Performance, entertainment, musicality, warmth, authenticity. To have the gift of making people smile and restoring their spirits through music and song... beautiful X
We used to drive all over Minnie soda drunk and smoked up. Used to get lost in Minnie soda almost weekly listening to your band constantly. Okay, mostly. Hard Rocking listening to a ton of rocky rollin', country, and other genres are music. Where's Nisswa? Oh B-r-r-rmidgi/Bemidji! Dulute/Duluth, lake affect weather very strange!
Re: Tommy LiPuma comment (153:50) on a concert during the Striking It Rich tour. Flash back to Fall 1972, I’m 18 and just moved from NY to start my 1st year at University Of Denver. A new friend had some other friends in Boulder who had tickets to see this band I had never heard of at Tulagi’s on the hill. As luck would have it there was an extra ticket and I went. All I can say is Tommy’s comment is spot on! Total magic in the air that night! I’ll never forget it. Became a big fan and turned all my friends on to Dan’s music over the years. Still listen to Striking It Rich which I believe to be a perfect album.
Damn, I sure miss Dan. First heard him on KSAN in '71. "The Buzzard Was Their Friend" knocked me out. Eventually, and inevitability, he did station IDs for them, which you might still be able to find on the interwebs somewhere (I did).
This sounds really great. Thanks so much for posting it. Daria Jazz and Roberta Donnay singing, and Dave Bell on lead guitar. Richard Chong, what a great violinist, Paul Smith on bass.
Don't think there are any of Dan's original Hot Licks here. That's OK, the Lickettes sound good, and Dan was there, and the arrangement is the same (maybe too much tambourine in the mix).
And I ran into my cheatin' ex-girlfriend at the bar. I cemented my promise to her that I was going in the Army to forget all about the...whole affair! I did. She got hitched to a TV announcer & made 4 little girls, all never to follow their patriarch's given last name. Grus Gott/Praise our Creator!

A gentleman is someone who can play the accordion, and doesn't.
The voice of Jeeves.

Thank you for telling us that. My heart is sad and happy for you.
71 years ol'. I just rediscovered Dan Hicks. Now I'm young again.
America's greatest unsung folk\swing hero! Thanks for everything, Dan. ❤️
His music always makes me smile and feel good!
Just can't listen to him/them and be in a bad mood. No sir, can't do it.
No kidding

Hope so.
The world isn't the same since Dan left. RIP

Bette Midler said he was one of her favorite musicians. Thanks for putting this out. Nice to know how much he was loved.
I got to see them live in 1973 when I was a sophomore in high school. I have been a fan ever since. Dan and the band have no equal.
what a great lead guitarist!

Did this audience have any idea how fortunate they were? No one like Dan.
I just adore this. What a wonderful "I Scare Myself".
