Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers-Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K. - Розваги

The cinematographer of this film is Roger Deakins. All of the films that I’ve seen shot by him look incredible. He’s done films like “The Goldfinch”, “Skyfall”, “Blade Runner 2049”, “Sicario”, and so many others. He is truly a master of the many cinema cameras that he has used.

This movie is a perfect example for how good visual effects don't have to be big flashy explosions with slow motion shots. Obviously, this movie wasn't shot in one take, that'd just be impractical. There are dozens of cuts in this movie. But it's the visual effects that make each cut transition so smoothly and flawlessly.
In the hole movie are 11 cuts
You can generally tell when they cut when the camera pans behind something like a rock or another soldier. Of course there was that "cut to black" moment as well.
The fact that this is based on the guy telling the story to his family leads me to believe there are many stories just like this that don't get shared.

"If you don't get there in time, we will lose 1,600 men." What an excellent way to set up high stakes along with time pressure. I'm sold.
Except that in WW1, especially by 1917, 1600 men was pretty much nothing. The death of 100k people would be a days battle. I think in the first month the French lost something like 250k. Sounds good, but overall was almost nothing. Unless you're one of those 1600 men or their families i suppose.
@@Scotticusmaximusmeta while I agree that 1,600 people in WW1 was just a normal day. The 100k figure in a day isn't anywhere close to true. I believe the Somme was 60k on the first day, and that was a very horrific day.
@@alextallen8019 probably a little overblown, but i was referring more to all sides and fronts, though i definitely didn't make that very clear. It was late and i was a bit drunk XD. And i certainly didn't mean to say that was a daily occurrence.

I am an Austrian (20) and I loved this movie. I spent my summer holidays with a few very good friends from Britain, France and Italy who I love and consider my brothers - the nations who fought against Austria/Germany in WWI. I am literally crying my eyes out, because it breaks my heart thinking that just over 100 years ago we would have been supposed to hate eachother & to kill eachother on the battlefield, only because some sick emperors & governments told us to. It would have been our duty to do so. They were spreading some false values of patriotism and pride. That was all just wicked manipulation from evil, powerhungry individuals. The exact same individuals who always wanted us to hate & fight eachother. Just the thought of me on one, and my good friend Charles on the other side, trying to kill eachother, yet thinking that we are doing the right thing, leaves me so sad. All those young people who could have had a bright future. All those people killing eachother, yet could have been best friends. Their fates destroyed by someone determining their future. It doesn't matter if they were German, British, French, American, etc.etc.etc. NOTHING! NOTHING good from wars. War is the worst thing that happened to humanity. DOWN with the ones who are trying to control/sacrifice others for their selfish reasons. I have nothing but CONTEMPT for those who are trying to spread conflict, all the emperors, governors, etc. who are responsible. I hope that after 2 WWs we are finally smarter and won't try to harm eachother anymore. No more brother wars. No more wars. Sending my love to all my brothers and sisters. The fact that this movie uses no CGI and is one continuous shot amazes me
It uses an enormous amount of CGI that was rendered in the UK, India and Canada. What makes it different to most CGI heavy films is how subtle it is. The rats were CGI, the dead horses weren't there, the shell casings on the ground were painted in, the actors running from the plane are digital and the fire is painted in. It is a triumph of CGI done properly.
Peter D I read somewhere that there was no CGI. With the plane part I realized there was CGI and the waterfall scene but I thought the rest had no CHI
Big ups to the cameraman who got all the footage from 1917

Even Dunkirk was better than this crap. This is literally a mediocre blockbuster with great cinematography and nothing else of substance. If it was set in 2117 during an alien invasion you probably wouldn't even want to watch it. But because it's WWI you see it as a "period drama" rather than what it actually is - a mediocre blockbuster.

@@B3RyL oh shut up you tosser
@@MagikarpMan No, it's a series of events that makes you go "that could not have happened" intertwined by weak character development and boring plot. The only reason you're saying it's "about the cruel reality of war" is because it's set in WWI. Set in in any other time period and you'll have a different notion. Like, set it in 2117 during a random alien invasion. Same movie, same story, same characters, same events. You'd think it's ridiculous and flat and any emotional aspect is forced and ultimately pointless. But hey, that's the difference between sci-fi and period dramas - the setting. Look past the setting and you'll see that even most Disney movies are more deserving of an Oscar than 1917.
@@B3RyL no one cares about your opinion mate its only a movie you dweeb
I can smell a new Oscar for Roger Deakins and Sam Mendes.
I can smell popcorn lmao I can't wait to see this in the cinema with my friends
I smell 3 Oscars for this movie
Glad roger bailed out of sicario 2 for this
@Louise X oh what? He's not in dune!? But denis villeneuve is directing dune, damn it
If he didn't get it for 2049 I don't think there's much hope . Only the amount of long shots will tell .
Great movie. Very dry, realistic, has none of that "protagonist plot armor" bs and no clichès, at least as far as i could notice. Also when colonel Benderfield Coomerdutch in the end tells the corporal Scoffield that the troops will be sent to slaughter anyway the next morning at dawn really shows how futile that whole mission was. I like that there is no silver lining, no happy ending, just raw reality of War. Tragic.
One of the best anti-war movie i've ever seen. My all time favorite is still "Come and see". That movie messed me up for good.
I don't recommend many movies, but this movie, the script, the cinematography, the music, the lighting, the story, is just perfect. There is nothing I could say to improve this movie. On top of it, the technique used is one long shot. The entire movie is one shot (almost). Which means you sit at the edge of your sofa for 2hrs. You don't get up to grab a snack, you don't go to the bathroom, you don't take a call, you don't text, you just sit and watch.
Just got home from this. It’s fucking awesome trust me
Captain Jackass I can back up his statement it was a great movie!!
@Captain Jackass yup it was a awsome movie
I don't trust strangers on the Internet who tell me to trust them.
Incredible experience indeed. Probably the best cinematic experience I've had in a long time. Roger Deakins is definitely picking up that 2nd Oscar.
john Taylor Go watch it yourself and see how amazing it is.
My two favorite scenes are when he is running through the ruins with flares going off, and the end when is running on the battlefield.
I can completely agree with you
That's one scene... what's the other one?
Chase Dotahsz
No they are 2
yas couldn’t agree more
Finley Jarvis
Loved how he charged through it
Praiseworthy of the highest standard in a continuous shot feature film (Whether special effects were used to achieve that or not is out of the question unless you're an uptight purist) that I have witnessed in a long time.
Props to Sam Mendes for his visionary executions in aligning the movements of the movie so well. The actors were brilliant on many accounts. The elements of surprise, shock & awe in the movie was marvelously accentuated by the cinematography.
This Movie, stands bloody damn great on its ground in my books.
the trailer has more cut scenes than the entire movie :P
"A Sentry Kit is available near your location"
HA BF1 nice 1
Tom Buxton the enemy are taking objective apples
"We've lost objective butter"
We have lost objective apples....
GRENADE!!!
Kinda spoiler alert .
I love how the the movie ends how it starts. With him sitting in the field.
Shanelle Goodman except he’s alone this time
OD Brazy :(
Director want to say thats him love to serve his country instead of leaving the war and go back to his family
Nurul Nazirah
Yea he hated it
Shanelle Goodman yes I picked up on this too!
Can we just appreciate how skilled this cameraman is to literally record the entire shot with 1 camera angle?
Never knew CallMeCarson liked this movie
Reminds me of Dunkirk. What a technical achievement this is. Roger Deakins is a legend.
It was FAR FAR better than Dunkirk
I didn't rate dunkirk, i went and watched 1917 last night and left feeling abit empty although it was filmed brilliantly i couldn't really get attached to the story line and i was hoping for at least one epic battle scene which didn't really happen.
@@dannykuhrt9144 yikes no.
Dunkirk didn't have enough soldiers waiting on the beach. And it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Apart from that, a forgettable movie - didn't do the heroes involved justice, in my opinion.
Gin Tomino Have you seen it?
I also thought that it would be like Dunkirk, I was absolutely wrong, and I’m glad I was wrong. The production will leave you in awe.
spoiler: the germans lose the war lmao
no, seriously , cant wait until they make a sequel to this. They should call it 1942
bloynik
No 1918 seeing if Schofield survives the War
1944 could be Saving Private Ryan, but without Ryan. Just trying to survive Overlord.
the middle man
No 1918
Yes 1942
Fuck all of you
One of the best movies i've seen in a while.
This is such a brilliant film. It's more than just about WW1. I love the cinematography, the one shot approach, the music and how you can really connect with the actors.
Tommen and Robb from Game of Thrones.
Galahad and Merlin from Kingsman.
Sherlock and Moriarty from Sherlock.
What a cast from the British finest actors.
RAM Sketch dose Richard madden play the brother ? Cuz he ain’t in the trailer dam now I am Gunna have to watch it .
@@kkandsims4612 damn bro sorry for giving you spoiler. I'm not gonna tell you anything, just watch it already.. the movie was insane

2:04 how everyone in my school runs when the bell goes for end of school
Just came back from watching this staggering masterpiece. The trailer doesn’t do the movie justice at ALL. Please go watch it

@@2Chenzzzz Robb Stark?
You mean Tommen Lannister.... 🤣
@@GrimNemesis oh yeah, i forgot about that. 😁
So we get a Stark and a Lannister in this movie. Too bad there's not a Targaryen too lol.
****SPOILER ALERT****
I loved this film and it actually had a satisfying ending. That handshake with Blake's brother meant more to him than any medal could give him.
At the end of the events:
Cameraman: Aw darn, forgot to record, well I gue- oh. OH-
