- VP-BAP 727-100 "Super 27" departing VNY on a 6 hour journey to MPTO / PTY. The two outside engines have been retrofitted with the JT8D-200 series engines while the middle engine remains the JT8D-9 through 17 series.
Very nice video. This airplane seems to have a very nice makeover. One popular update for the 100 VIP, was to replace the -7 engines with the -11, which this airplane does not appear to have -7, at least in #1 and #3 positions. Some went a step further to have the APR feature for when operating out of high altitude airports like the old Quito, La Paz, and Bogota.
Thanks for watching! Yes it’s interesting to see all the different modifications these 727’s went through over time. Pretty sure the #2 engine is either a 9A or 17A. Just by sound. Otherwise this is now known as a “Super 27” as the #1 and #3 engines have been upgraded to the -200 series. So it sounds like an MD-80 and 727 all in one.
God the 727 is a gorgeous looking aircraft
Ahmad Sayyed It absolutely is. My favorite passenger airliners of all time. There was a time when these planes were a dime a dozen at airports all over the world.
@@LoveJT8D no way?!
Ahmad Sayyed Yep! Mostly throughout the 1970’s through the 1990s. In the 2000s especially after 9/11, 727s were rapidly retired from airline fleets.
Great catch! I spent 7 1/2 years on the 72 and really loved it. It guzzled fuel but only the L-1011 could cruise as fast.
I love that there are 727's still in use
727 is my all time fave, such beautiful aircraft. A lot of the aircraft back in the day were so lovely, Its sad to see them slowly become obsolete. If I ever get rich I'm going to salvage the front section of a classic jet and turn it into a simulator.
Had a lot of flights on these. Very stable and just a nice smooth ride. They handled turbulence very well too.
Craig Pennington Absolutely. The 727 was built like a tank.
the Wright brothers would be proud, Awesome aircraft!!
Good ol VP-BAP, just an amazing airplane! Thanks for the upload!
It's nice to see businesses give classic airliners like these a new home. Definitely an amazing airplane.
3 days ago VP-BAP was spotted in Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos. As always she is still in perfect shining condition
I remember taking DFW -layover flights on AA and Eastern back in the 70s, en route to Mexico City, on 727s. I enjoyed sitting close to the engines, though wing seats were cool, too!
Alejandro Sutono The best seats in the house.
I'm always afraid that a turbine fin will let loose, and you know what happened to that lady who got sucked out of he seat.
The 727 is still a beautiful and modern looking airplane. If the engineers had hung a pair of CFM56 engines and deleted the central engine, engine to ground would never have been an issue as it is in the 737 NG and Max.
encinobalboa I wish there was someway to make the 727 stick around longer. I’m sure there could’ve been some way to strap a pair of CFM56s on it. 🙂
GOOD CATCH ,BACK IN 1991 I SAW ETHIOPIAN B707 AT VNY APT!
Solomon Pilot That's awesome you had the chance to witness that 707 at VNY.
What a beautiful Livery.
Very beautiful airplane!!
Beautiful airplane!
One of the best airplanes Boeing built, imho. Great to see this -100. Awesome take-off and turn. Liked a lot, and thanks for sharing:) Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays to you as well. Thanks for watching.
❤ those classic sounds :) Liked :))
Forget a Learjet or Gulfstream, I want a 727.
Backpacker Thrulife Now you’re talking 😎
YUM!!! what a plane.
I love those JT8Ds!
It definitely sounds much better when there are three of them ;)
Gostei muito do seu vídeo, fantástico !
Now this is classic 💕
Kalvindran Balamuraly Absolutely! The 727 is one magnificent aircraft.
Thanks so much for uploading this! Just awesome!
Thanks for watching. It turned out pretty good however, next time I need to either go hand-held for the takeoff roll or put pillows under the tripod legs haha.
God bless us start your day with our Almighty God. Good morning po
Super 27 😍
Another rare bird Ryan- thanks!
727 is the best Boeing narrowbody! But i like the JT8D-1 better than the -200...
Agreed on both fronts. The JT8D-1, through the -17 have a better sound, than the -200 family. Of course just opinion.
Esta Aeronave é a mais bonita na minha opinião, WOW !!!!!!
if engineers would have just planned for the middle engine to be upgraded the life of the 727 would have been much longer.
Chainspike101 Definitely wish there were more 727s around.
Sweet, some one knows how to travel in style
3:26 - 3:53 That sound...another aeroplane took-off??
Rambut Lebat Yes that was definitely another departure.
que hermoso avion!!!
Flores Edgardo 👍😎🛩
Does anyone know if this bird still carries a 3 cockpit crew compliment or is it just 2 guys?
That’s a 3 man crew. It just wouldn’t be worth the trouble to convert an aging 727 to a dual crew flight deck. You could pay your FE for a hundred years for what that would cost :)
All 727s are required to have a flight engineer
Certified that way, glass cockpit, freighters, Super 727s like this too
Fed ex is the only company that converted it's DC-10's to a 2 man crew calling it the MD-10. Basically making it a MD-11 flight deck.
Perfeito!!!
Very nice!! :)
C'mon put back the two (REAL) Stage II JT8Ds on the side mounts ,problem fixed.
Duderocks5539 I'm with you on that 🙂
I'd be happy just to see the winglets removed.
I cannot see the "Cooper Lock"
on the airstairs.
Damn I can't believe that thing fits down twy B.
I have also seen most of the BBJ's at VNY use the same taxiway.
A 727 with winglets? And Super 80 engines? Sad. Just sad. That poor plane has been turned into a eunuch.
Were turbojets better performance wise?
Funny.
+Iron Horseman Exactly. Those JT8D-200 engines are quiet compared to the original JT8D-1 through -17 engines. Even hushed -1 through -17s are still louder than the -200 engines. Even though the Super 27s still have the JT8D-1 through -17 number 2 engine ,it is hushed even more ,and is only used at half power because the JT8D-200s are providing most of the thrust ,so that’s why it doesn’t sound that loud. If the center engine was being used at full power ,it would definitely silence basically all of the noise the -200s are making 😉 The JT8D-200 engines believe it or not are only a little bit louder than a CFM-56. And the -200s also provide I would say some benefits to the owner ,They are at least 10% more fuel efficient then the -1 through -17s ,they are Stage III noise compliant without hush kits ,and have more thrust.
+cyprixx I wouldn’t say they are better ,the JT8D-200s have more performance, as they have more thrust ,sure they are a lot quieter then the JT8D-1 through -17 engines ,but they have benefits for the owner ,like being 10% more fuel efficient then the -1 through -17 engines ,they are Stage III noise compliant without the need for hush kits ,and have more thrust. But for us Avgeeks that like loud stuff ,we would all agree to take the JT8D-1 through -17s over the JT8D-200s any day. Even JT8D-1 through -17s with hush kits are still louder than the JT8D-200s.
now the GE 90 growl took over
Damn, you cut away. What was that plane with the American flag on the tail at :27 sec?
I believe that is the tail of another 727 that is stored at VNY.
LoveJT8D I think you're right.
bts845 I found the aircraft in this spotting video I made at VNY. The other 727 can be seen at 0:16. ua-cam.com/video/I6BDYM845Bk/v-deo.html
LoveJT8D Awesome! Thank you sir!
It's still. has a crew of 3.
I think the avionics in this plane have been upgraded to accommodate a crew of 2.
Still flying in 2023.
Do those JT8D-200s sound not that noisy or what? The -200 engines are Stage III noise and even though the middle -1 through -17 engine is hush kitted ,I guarantee that is making the most noise 😉 The -1 through -17 engines even with a hush kit is still louder than the -200 engines. But if you took the hush kits off a -1 through -17 it would have an even louder rumble and the afterburner like crackle. I’m not a fan of the -200 engines at all ,the -1 through -17 engines are the REAL JT8D engine variants. Even with hush kits they are still louder than the -200s.
Duderocks5539 I bet you are right as far as the sound level goes. Even on taxi, the center engine seems to be more present than the other two. My favorites are the -1 through-17 also. Even the -1 through -7 have a slightly different sound. The scream a little more than the -9 through -17.
+LoveJT8D Yeah ,the JT8D-1 though -17 variant engines are the "REAL" JT8D engines. What sucks is all -1 though -17 engines that are powering aircraft in the US had to have hush kits put on them back in 1999. I believe other countries like Alaska ,Canada ,Mexico and Europe don't need hush kits on there 732s ,727s and DC-9s. -1 through -17s without a hush kit have a louder rumble and afterburner like crackle. I don't even think the hush kits bring them down to Stage III to be honest ,all they do is eliminate the crackle and quite the rumble a little. But there is no way even with a hush kit it is making Stage III. Also the JT8D-200s don't need any hush kit since they are already Stage III ,and they honestly are just a tad louder than for example a CFM-56. But JT8D-1 through -17s even with hush kits are still louder than the JT8D-200s.
Also what do you mean by the -1 though -7s having a different sound? I have only heard JT8D-200s on MD-80s ,and Hush kitted -17s on the ZeroG 727-200 adv and Delta's DC-9-50s before they were retired. But what exactly is different about the -1 through -7s?
Duderocks5539 The -1 through -7 variants have more of a hollow whisping air sound if you’re sitting next to the engine. It’s a subtle sound difference but if you listen to a 7B next to a 9A on the inside and outside, you’ll hear a difference. The -1 through -7 believe it or not takes on some ever so slight characteristics of the -200 sound but still super unique. Kind of hard to put into words haha.
+LoveJT8D I see. But yeah I don’t consider JT8D-200s a True JT8D engine. They sound different when idling ,they have a much deeper buzzsaw as well as you can hear buzzsaw more than rumble and lastly there way quieter than the JT8D-1 through -17 engines. The JT8D-200s are only maybe like 2 decibels louder than a CFM-56. I believe from 200 feet away from the runway an MD-80 with JT8D-200s is only about 86 decibels which that is in the Stage III noise decibels. A 737-800 with CFM-56s is about 83-34 decibels at the same distance. A 732 ,727 and DC-9 without a hush kit from 200 feet away is about 92 decibels which is in the Stage II noise decibels. Then a 732 ,727 and DC-9 with a hush kit from the same distance is probably about 89 decibels. I’m not saying these are the true dB ratings but they could be.
Are those turbofans? When did the turbojet go away?
cyprixx These are los bypass turbofans. I’d say most turbojets gone by the 90’s but not 100% sure.
nice
man upgrade the avionics and the engines plane could be in use today
Necesito un poco de juanita de la golden de acapulco, me urge la necesito por prescripcion medica.
wow
Wonder who owns this?
i miss the crACKLING noise they made ... when they rulled LAX in the 1980's
the only music better than these engines are the c-5 galaxy tf-39 engines.
To the best of my knowledge NO 727's were ever converted to a 2 man crew. There was talk about that but the cost of doing that to an old airframe like that was prohibitive and it never happened. Would need real proof before I believed they ever did that to 1 airplane!
B747guy Yeah, I’ll have to do more research myself on that.
You couldn't convert to a two man crew.
F/Es are always mandatory on DC 8s and 727s
Made in 1968
comprare ese avion
The 727 is still a 3 man flight deck
B747guy This one may have been converted to 2 man. Not sure though.
Always was, always will be!!
