  • I have two 20” K Zildjian Pre-Age Dry Light Rides, from different years, and (surprise!) they sound different.
The 20” K Zildjian Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride has long been my favorite cymbal. I bought my first one new around 1993 and used it quite a bit for jazz and rock gigs, especially gigs that were in lower-volume environments. It has a little bit of stick definition, a beautiful wash, dark-ish crash, and clangy bell.
For years, I had a piece of tape on the underside, which made it a little more defined and a little less washy.
A few years ago, I saw a tiny crack it in, so I had a chunk removed. Still sounds great, though I was a bit sad that the only cymbal I’ve ever cracked happened to be my favorite.
Zildjian stopped making these years ago, but I’ve also been interested to see when others go for sale used. A few weeks ago, I saw a particularly clean one, and I grabbed it.
The newer one (made in 1998, according to the serial number) definitely sounds different than the first one.
The newer one is heavier-it’s 2177g, compared to 2086g for the one from 1993. In part because it’s heavier, the newer one has more definition and a higher pitch. It almost sounds like it sits somewhere between my original Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride and my 1990s K Zildjian Ride. …And that’s a sound I’ve been looking for!
