i cant believe they aren't as popular anymore. I swear to god they were the finest sounding drums I ever owned and I had a few nice kits. I could really feel their sound particularly the larger rotos
Yeah I know what you mean. Mine slipped away when I wasn't looking (because I wasn't there at the time). I was pissed off or maybe just sad. Nah, it was both. Lost everything actually. It's cool, I'm still alive and almost everyone else in my story is 6 foot distancing straight down. But I think roto toms have a sound that falls somewhere between "normal" drums with a shell and instruments like guitars, etc that are tuned to a note in the key of (*). In short they have more of a singing voice than standard drums, imo. Being able to turn them and get a pitch bend effect is cool if not very practical in most circumstances. Sending out a cracking rim shot for Neil Peart of Rush. See ya around maybe, UP THE IRONS!!!
I had no idea what the hell you were talking about or even *could* be talking about, then I got to that part of the video and was shocked how clearly I remembered. Holy shit.
Great performance Martin. I recently put together my own roto tom drum set including customized hardware for them and filmed a video also. They are so melodic and easily tunable that I don't think I'll ever go back to regular toms.
Thank You! I use standard toms mostly, but sometimes am using combination rotos/concert toms - without bottom heads. Very inspirating color combination!
I just added a set of Remo roto Tom’s to my Mapex kit. Always loved them. Hadn’t had a set since the 80’s. Seems like he has lot more room for few more cymabals? One crash is odd to me. The rack on left is moving too much mine don’t do that. Maybe cheap stand or something.
I've seen guys put rim mounts on them, but then you lose the 'roto' aspect of the toms. I've thought of mounting one to a boom cymbal stand to retain the ability to tune it, but I haven't tested my theory yet.
@@drummerdan95 I can't remember his name but I saw a guy using an 8" and a 10" rotos for his rack toms and he definitely was using a cymbal stand and retaining the ability to spin/tune them somehow so it can definitely be done.

:-D Why? Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford, Alex Van Halen and many many others used always classic drumstick for Roto-toms... ;-) If I would use it like timpani in classical music, maybe, but this video is about basic Rototoms sound in drumset.

They have a timpani type quality. I'm sad that I sold mine. The problem for me was that I couldn't stop playing them. Haha.

Very nice playing. I've always loved the sound of Rototoms on Vandenburg songs for instance.

Love your groove! Now people, THIS is what a good drummer sounds like.
Stunning rototom solo!
These Roto- toms sounds much better than the most drumkits I know...
Beautiful sound and well tuned !
this great !
great playing, great drum sounds
První minuta je TAK věrný Bozzio, až jsem se u toho zasnil. :)
Reminds me of the high school football marching band days
Damn. Excellent work my friend.
Thank You!
So do drums even need a body ( wood shell ) ? these sound pretty good !
Not necessarily, since about 80% of the sound is determined by drumhead, tuning, sticks, technique/ style etc.
However, double-headed drums do sound "fuller", so it's entirely up to individual taste and what's needed for the musical context.
This is so inspiring...Thank you very much sir...Fine playing indeed!
Thanks! :-)
EXCELLENT!!!!!! A hug from Argentina!!!!
Thank You!
Interesting that even the deep ones have a nice tone...
16"&18" rototoms are out of production and extremely rare.
In Brazil there are lots of rototom manufacturers, on sales sites the rototoms are easily found

Dudes got talent.
What heads 16 and 18 sound great. Those are the hardest to make sound good
I have a full set also. Sounds great
Thank You, heads used on roto-toms: Aquarian Classic Clear, heads on snare drum: Aquarian Modern Vintage Medium on top, Classic Clear Snare on bottom

Beautiful!
I wish remo still made roto toms
They do still make these !
They still do, just the 6", 8", and 10" ones. You'll have to go to sites like ebay or reverb to find the larger ones.
Paráda Martin !

Lui è molto molto tecnico ma il suono è veramente discutibile di questi rototom.

bad ass
These would go good with steel drums.
Get a rack. That looks flimsy.
Sound like tool
yeah a bit. except danny has those sick multi area digital ones
Taky jsem měl dva, ale nikdy mě to nechytlo nebo se ten zvuk spíš nehodil do mýho hraní.
At 3:20 it starts to sound great! In the begining it sounded pretty bad to me.
Ma se suonavano male 40 anni fa, perchè oggi dovrebbero suonare bene??? Ma davvero vi piace questo suono "barattoloso"???
boh, si
