  • why didn't my seeds grow? Let's take a look at how we do a post mortem on seeds which should have sprouted but didn't grow. How do we figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.
    1) are the seeds still intact and in place (did a mouse get them?)
    2) dig out the seeds, are they starting to sprout? hard as a rock? mushy/rotting?
    3) too much water? not enough water?
    4) too hot? too cold? not consistant temp?
my seeds didn't sprout, why aren't my seeds growing? are my seeds bad? where did my seeds go?

I've never seen beans rot like that. I guess it's just my climate. It's so hot it's almost impossible to overwater unless you do it more than once a day. One thing for me is I've never transplanted beans. I always direct seed. Birds are usually my issue. Especially when planting corn

I've found that green plastic fencing set over the top deterrent to squirrels, birds and cat digging.

I usually directly plant seed too...the garden fiasco continues so I just don't have the area to plant...of course it's also raining and 55F today...ground soil is back under 60 (around 58)...i'm glad I don't have warm crop in the ground yet.

Fascinating stuff. I'm sorry about the first green bean attempt, but it does make for good content! I look forward to Green Beans V2: The Beanining!

I had a similar problem last year. I grow beans on the same trellis as peas, after the peas have fizzled out for the season. Last year I tried to get a head start by starting green beans in cells before the peas had finished up. Not one of them sprouted. I then direct sowed the exact same seeds two weeks later and they all sprouted and grew wonderfully. I won't try pre sprouting bean seeds again.

I hear you, i'm only doing it this way because I have a large construction project going on at my house and the construction guys kept getting stuck in my clay soil yard...so they had to use my large inground garden bed as parking and a way to get out of being stuck. I still have an excavator parked there....I can't wait for them to leave, then I have to start rebuilding my dirt....I made it from woodchips over the last 7 years and it's all gone now. I have to laugh or cry.

I had a fail of 8 seeds. Yes, green beans for me too. My other stuff came up, but not those. Hum…I didn’t look thru the dirt…
