Just dropped my 16 year old boy off. Been making this 150 mile round trip every other weekend since he was 2. He will be 17 this summer and getting his license in a few weeks. It’s been one hell of ride buddy, worth every mile. Love You Son ❤️

I remember being a little kid, and liking this song but not really understanding the message. Now I'm 15, and I realize that this song is the very definition of me and my Dad's relationship. I was 2 years old when my parents separated, and I grew up being with my Dad on Saturdays supervised by my grandparents. My mom raised me, and tried to make me hate him, but now I realize the real man he is, and that none of what she said is true. I just really want to thank my dad for sticking around because he could've easily exited my life forever, but no, he decided to be a dad and raise his son the best he could with the limitations he was given. I just really want to thank my dad for making that "highway 20 ride" every Saturday when I was I kid to be with me.

What amazing perspective you have...you're growing up to be an incredible young man. I'm 47, and l am still recovering from the crap my mom tried to pull in regards to my Dad. And my Dad sounds like yours...for all the crap he was forced to deal with, he could have exited mine and my sister's life, but he chose to be a Dad, and I'm forever grateful. I thank your Dad, and my Dad, and all the Dads that persevered, for their children.

This song came out amidst my divorce. I had just been stationed in Georgia. I drove up 20 twice a month to see my son. Fast forward 11 years. I have custody of my son and a great relationship with his mother. But if this song comes on the radio or across my Playlist, I'll cry like a baby. One of the realist songs ever written.

This song has always reminded me of my little girl. For most of her childhood, I lived about four hours drive away from her. There were countless hours driving to see her, and always that sinking feeling when I headed back home. She is 28 now, and just got married. She chose this song for the father/ daughter dance and I couldn't stop the flood works when it came on. Such a relatable song for those of us with separated families and distance to deal with.

I dedicate this song to my 3 wonderful children Krimsen, Zayden, & Nicholaì. The best lines in this song are where he says, "I hope that one day, you see it through my eyes that there was no other way to work it out, And "Please don't mistake me for a man that didn't care at all." I fought the judicial system with no success and I hurt everyday I can't hug you or simply see your face when I say I Love you. Nothing will heal the pain for us, but I hope you never turn your back to me. I don't know how long highway 20 is but I feel every inch of the 654 miles that separates us. Always remember Daddy loves you all.

I think even us kids who had Dads with 9-5 jobs knew that feeling of a highway 20 ride. My Dad always got home around 6pm everyday. I was 1 of 3 girls and I'm not sure who was more excited opening the door at 6pm. Us girls or the Beloved Dad who walked through the front door. My Dad died much too young and I still remember that feeling of excitement when 6pm would come. Those days are now over 45 years ago. Damn how I miss that Sweet Soul, I had the privilege to call Dad ❤💝❤💝

I live an hour away from my kid. But this song still means so much to me. His mother left me when he was three months old. I always make sure I have him when it is my weekend with him. Many times after I drop him off with his mother I play this song on the ride home. It sure speaks for me on these rides back home. My heart breaks when I drop him back off, and the bright spot of my life is always picking him up. He is almost 6 now.

To ALL the dads making this drive: Here are the lyrics to a song I wrote from the son's perspective.
It matters more than you know!
    I standby every other Friday
    While staring at this highway
Can’t wait until you appear in my sight
    Been waitin on this weekend
Dad, I can't wait to go fishin
Told all my friends about it during school
    As you drive
and the miles go flying by
I stare and smile, as I slowly come alive
Every time I get the chance to sit up in the front with you
And I love the days and the miles spent next to you
    On this Highway 20 ride
Now dad you may not realize, but I can see with these eyes
that you and mom don't really get along
You know dad I don't blame you, from where I sit it takes two
I'm just glad you even care at all
    As you drive
and the miles go flying by
I stare and smile, as I slowly come alive
Every time I get the chance to sit up in the front with you
And I love the days and the miles spent next to you
    On this Highway 20 ride
    So now I drive
Man, those years went flying by
    And I still smile
Every time you cross my mind
Those were the moments of my life
    That I'll cherish every time
    Yeah when I think
Of the time spent next to you
    on that Highway 20 ride

A beautiful, moving song about the pain of separation from those who we love the most. Truly “get it” if you have been married to a trucker who drove long distance & how hard that separation was for him being out alone on the road for weeks at a time away from his wife, family & friends & all that was familiar… this story is about the pain of divorce but if you take it one step further, it is about loving someone & hurting deeply inside because you cannot be with them & have to keep on driving all alone in that truck just to make a living. Why it meant so very much to me.

Often wonder who got that ideal childhood.I do not hate my parents by any means but can't help but question all the unnecessary damage done to three kids by seemingly sane people.Sorry for your pain.Someone once told me when people walk out of your life and away from you . . . let them keep walking. @@domination1985 you couldn't more Danny. Always take any opportunity that you can take to see them. Even if u have to cancel somerhing that you had planned. Because they didn't plan on what happened. If not then ( as they say in the blink of eye they r grown) it is so true. If you dont take the time when they turn 18 they will be to busy for you. But the way I have always looked at it is when they turn 18 years old grown off to college no time, so just look at it this way That is only 18 summer's, or 18 Christmas, if you really look at it that way it always made me think wow that really isn't a long time. 18 years does seem like a long time 18 summers ( winter, fall) what ever time of year they are born from that moment of birth you only have that 18 birthdays to make an impact on your children's life. And it will make them alot better person when they get older. No need to argue, fight, I can't I have to do whatever, then atleast spend every single moment that you can regardless of how little time you think it might be, no need to argue or fight over things that is just taking those precious moments away that you could spend with them. So 18 summers or when ever makes you realize that's really a blink of an eye. I hope you have a blessed day. And enjoy those precious moments any chance no matter how long or short you might think it is because it's not. 🤝☝️🤲🙏🥁🥁

I couldn't imagine not seeing my son at least 5 to 6 days a week. He is as strong of a kid as I I have every seen. He is the kid laying on the bottom of the shopping cart while shopping at Walmart. He is also the kid the just randomly walks over and takes a cart from an elderly in the same paring lot. "I will return this cart for you." This song helped made me realize the scarcity of some dads in their sons life, and how that would feel for the son and the dad. There are a lot of good dads out there that don't get the opportunity to show there kids who they are. Maybe I am a rarity but everything I do, smell, drink , eat , buy, grow, hunt, fish, work, live, breathe, pray and every step I take will be for Aiden. That will and has brought him to my side.

Zac Brown’s Highway 20 Ride is a classic. Zac Brown is the Kid involved in Highway 20 Ride which really tears at one’s emotion when you put yourself into that position. Zac Brown’s band continues to expand the field of country music integrating several genres of music. Video is attached.

Highway 20 may or may not pass through where you from but the road number doesn't matter. It happens to pass through near where I am from but its anywhere and everywhere to those who love their kids and face this situation. Thank you Zach Brown Band.

My son lived on Hwy 20 in Toledo, Oregon which goes from Coast to Coast. I am 67 now and his mother and I were divorced 48 years ago, so not only did I make that drive but I died a million times during it. My son just died in September from 3 bee stings, he was almost 50, and I will always wonder what we would have become had we been able to meet one more time on that Hwy 20 ride?

These guys sound better live than most of today's bands sound with the help of studio musicians and electronic wizardry. Real musicians, real songs sung with real feeling. I wish the rest of the so called music industry would take notice of this. It is what real music sounds like and what real music fans are craving!

This song really hits home with me. As someone who used to drop his daughter off on Sundays for almost 15 years, I can tell you the drive back alone is one of the worst feelings a father (or mother) can have. You feel like you leave a piece of your heart behind every time you make the drive. I hated Sundays because of it.

a real woman/mother would never take her babies away from the dads, no matter how shitty things ended between them. It isn't their fault two grown adults couldn't work it out.

Jacob Lehnherr yes I very much agree! BUT, I think father's get so much hatred because of divorces! My mom wants nothing to do with my dad anymore. My dad trys to talk to my mom about bills with me and my brother and she just doesn't reply.
