    99% of F1 carbon footprints came from flights, trucks, and cargo ships that transported them around the world, therefore lowering carbon footprints is pointless unless they change their calendar.

      valid point. But you can't underestimate the value of spectacle. Most viewers don't see anything else involved, just the cars on track. I know I can only speak for myself but many real automotive enthusiasts (not just super-car fanboys) value efficiency just as much as raw power. Seeing the premier motorsport shift to a supposedly cleaner more efficient power train can have an affect on the masses. I know for a fact I'm not the only car enthusiast, while not rich, don't see myself buying a car that can't achieve 20mpg.. maybe 18 for some nicer cars ;)

      I feel like keeping the Turbo V6s also has a big part in how F1 Tech influences the automotive industry as a whole. Nowadays most people are just looking for the most fuel efficient and reliable car. With the increasing cost of everything, and more importantly, fuel, nobody really wants to own a complex, overengineered, gas guzzling V10/V12. So these big shot engine manufacturers like Mercedes, Ferrari, Ford, and Audi, don't see a reason why they should spend millions, perhaps billions developing a high revving V10/V12 if they're not gonna utilize it in their road cars.

      F1 needs hybrid. F1 is about technological excellence and innovation, not loud noise. Hybrid allows for much higher acceleration while keeping the cars super effecient by allowing for energy recupperation. Why would the peak motorsport league go back to 1960s technology? It doesn't make any sense. Although i do agree the push for "environmentalism" is just marketing bullshit.

  • @Synystr7
    @Synystr7 3 дні тому +188

    - The cars will be slower due to needing to keep the batteries charging constantly. Expect massively slower race lap times than qualifying.
    - Since everyone has DRS, there will be no draft, hence the dependance on electrical boost to aid overtakes... which means more charging. (If you wanted to make it easier to overtake, you would add drag to the cars and removing DRS. This allows for more organic overtakes. Look up the 1999 US 500 race. They installed a flap on the rear wing to slow the cars down, and offer 40-50kph drafting speeds at 350 kph.)
    - The cars length and width, without *significant* reduction in weight, only achieves a smaller floor area, reducing the best downforce. It also doesn't magically make it easier for cars to overtake.
    - Reducing the cars ability to generate downforce via the floor will make it harder to follow.
    - Shrinking the size of the tires will give the cars less free mechanical grip, making it harder to follow and harder to race side by side.
    - "Optimizing efficiency" is great for endurance racing and transport trucks. Not for F1. Formula 1 is about speed and technology. Not fuel and tire saving.
    - The majority of F1's carbon footprint comes from logistics, power grid usage at the tracks and maintaining the classy experience at the tracks. Not the cars. Charter flights for the teams. Make everyone fly economy. Ban driver's private air travel. Reduce wasted power at the circuits on things like a giant F1 sign at Las Vegas. Don't run night races any more due to lighting demands. Reduce plastic usage and wasteful fancy foods that are shipped in from all over the world. Use local.
    - 7:28 except Andretti.

      @Cmin_Zaps 3 дні тому +15

      1) The teams are gonna find a way to increase battery life anyway, so in a matter of time the cars will be as fast as before
      2) There will still be X-Mode/DRS Zones that are ONLY for the straight parts of a track, and also this DRS is (Theorically) not activated by the battery, it actually helps to save the battery by getting less drag and making the car gain speed in said straights
      3) 30 Kilos less for a car that is 10 Centimeters less large and 20 Cm Shorter is like losing 50 kilos on a 750 kilos car.
      4) That's why they are modifying the other aero efficient aspects
      5) Smaller tires are made to pollute less (You know the FIA wants to look forward in polluting less with the cars), also they interfere less with the full aero package of the cars, so if the mechanical grip is less, the downforce grip is theorically more.
      6) In this case they do this to allow the drivers to push more during qualifying and races.

    • @amjan
      @amjan 3 дні тому +12

      You make some good points, especially on aerodynamics (and yes IndyCar did a fantastic move in 1999!), but this is nonsense:
      "Shrinking the size of the tires will give the cars less free mechanical grip, making it harder to follow and harder to race side by side."
      It is a known FACT that less mechanical grip = easier overtaking. Just look at WET races - best overtaking ever. Also, less mechanical grip (or any other grip) means longer braking distances due to weaker braking and slower cornering speed, which all means more overtaking chances.

    • @Synystr7
      @Synystr7 3 дні тому +2

      @amjan I guess you're right about the low grip. I was thinking about dudes hanging it around the outside. But... You're right. The lower the grip (within reason) it will allow cars to be side by side around corners easier

      Unfortunately probably not sound, we’ve come from the v12, v10, v8 and now v6 and the demand of the combustion power unit is no longer what it was previously since demand on the battery power is increasing in 2026.
      I can see these cars being 100% battery powered within the next 2 rule changes after 2026. It would actually simplify the system and you’d have electric motors on each axle. If they placed the battery system low and spread out enough maybe it could lower center of gravity too. That would mean engine manufacturers would actually have to battle to produce the best battery and electrical system. But overall I think the system would be more reliable with cooling than a hybrid system where 2 components would fail.
      Yeah it’s sad we won’t hear those old f1 noises but it’s just how things are moving unfortunately

    The weight gain was never a safety reason, in your graph, the spike from 2005 to 2011 was when they added KERS and 2011 to 2014 was when they went full hybrid i.e. they added more batteries to the cars, around 80kgs from 05-14, the 30kgs from 14 to 17 was the halo which is a definite safety improvement, not sure what 19 added when they simplified the front wings then but maybe the additional side impact structure, and I guess the 50kg in 22 was from the floor becoming more 3d and need the reinforcements
    Also what do you mean by 100% sustainable fuels, like full synthetic easy to produce with easily renewable sources or did they plant some tree or built some carbon capture crap

    I dont understand the reduction in ground effect. The current cars can follow closely fairly well till the tyres go off, surely downforce that isn't affected by dirty air is better. All the teams have pretty much got a handle on it and the bouncing is all but gone. I think to get good close racing we need ground effect cars with hard tyres so you can follow closely and push without the tyres go off and losing the chance of a pass after a couple of laps.
    Look at the early 2000's cars with the hard tyres they could push lap after lap like it was qually but dependency on wings for downforce stopped them getting as close as they could have.
    What would also help with racing is if they stopped adding dull narrow street tracks with no room to pass or make mistakes. They need more real tracks instead.

    But they are literally just bringing back the old 2000's F1 cars with an hybrid engine. And Honestly? I'm Looking foreward to it. High nose cars, really low ground effect undertray, the clean sidepods... They are re-introducing those design choices we were used to see in the late 2000's, expecially during the 2006-2008 period, with some changes yes, but I really love these new designs. F1 really needs to stop crowing about its sustainable / net zero carbon efforts. As soon as they stop the fleet of cargo aircraft and diesel trucks, then let's talk. And the schedule should be updated to make a simple loop around the planet rather than jumping from continent to continent for each race.

    The active aero is just a more fancy DRS as far as I have seen so far. More tactical use will only be possible if there is a limited number of uses and drivers can decide when to use them in those zones. Otherwise it's just DRS

    Secondly, unfortunately the weight loss isn't good enough to produce light and nimble cars. The 2026 cars will still be heavier than the 2021 cars, which were already quite heavy. If the cars can get back to at least 2018 weight, that would be a bit more of an improvement.

    you’re not really making an argument about how the new regulations improve overtaking. I'm not sure I see why the low drag configurations of active aero would help since both the attacking and defending cars will be using them on the straights. won't even add any tactical depth as you said, everybody will use the best mode for each track section, no strategy involved. it kind of feels like you are bringing things up without backing them with a technical analysis

    The active aero is very interesting. I wonder if it has to be controlled by the driver, or will they let a computer control it. With pressure sensors under the car floor, the aero could be computer controlled, to effectively control the ride height, to give a rudimentary 'active' suspension...although it will only be effective at higher speeds obviously. If it could be applied asymmetrically, it could keep the car floor flat in high speed corners
