      so do these devices only "add" noise to mask the real noise? I always hoped there'd be some secret technology that would actually subtract sound or make it disappear entirely..

    • @nosleeplessnights1

      @@slaveNo-4028 They do add noise to mask the real noise. The idea is that the constant sound is better than intermittent sound, or simply just more relaxing than an annoying external noise.

    This video is a few years old, but I just heard about white noise machines.I have a neighbour who snores so loud I can hear it through the wall and it's driving me insane! I have to sleep with ear plugs every night, but now my ears won't breathe during the night and they get itchy. This is very helpful so I can hear what sounds these machines include.

      It is indeed a bit old now, but most of the devices are still available. I would also still rate the LectroFan Evo very highly if I did the video again today! Good luck combatting the snoring. Some deep pink or brown noise should hopefully help.

    We used to love the Dohm, but they are now owned by a company named Yogasleep and they started using cheaper internals. Our last model was about 10 years old before it started making a clicking noise. The new one never really worked right on the low setting and high had a very subtle rattle. After about a year, it started screaming, suggesting a bearing went out. We're going with a SNOOZ instead since it uses the same concept and looks like it uses higher quality components.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  3 роки тому

      Hi. I can't comment on that as I haven't taken then apart to check, and there is nothing on their website (obviously) about using cheaper components. However, I recently played an original Marpac and a new Yogasleep model, and they sound the same to me. Having said that, I do agree that the Snooz is very good. It's considerably more expensive, and annoying that some features are only accessible via the app, but it is better in general I think. I have a video of the Snooz here in case you didn't see it: ua-cam.com/video/YAwev6ZN_G4/v-deo.html

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  4 роки тому +9

      You're welcome, I'm happy to hear it was helpful. To be honest, if you're sleeping next to a person snoring, a white noise machine is unlikely to help much. Perhaps if you sleep in separate beds with a bit of space between them, and put the machine in between you at head height, it might help a little. But if it's loud snoring, you'll still hear it and then just end up with two loud noises in the room instead of one. You might be better off getting some decent earplugs and/or using noise-cancelling headphones. Ideally, the person snoring would take some steps to reduce it for everyone else's sake if it's possible.

    Excellent video! 😃👍 I have to add that I also have several white noise and nature sound apps downloaded on my phone but unless you're listening with headphones, they're not loud enough to drown out external noise. I have to have white noise playing the entire night because my neighbours are so loud! We also had to endure night road works! I have personally owned at least 10 if not more various types of white noise machines. Some are better than others. You need constant noise to drown out outside noise, some nature sounds are only good if you're in a quiet environment. I personally like rain sounds but I have been known to use multiple white noise machines for different neighbours on either side of the wall! 😩 The cheaper ones with external batteries aren't loud enough.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, glad you liked it. I agree with every point you make there. Apps are great, but you need headphones or a speaker. And constant noise is better than nature sounds for sure, with the exception of waterfalls and rain which can also be pretty good.

      @@nosleeplessnights1 I agree. I just bought another white noise machine that arrived yesterday and one more on its way! 😁 I really like rain sounds. I mainly bought a white noise machine to drown out outside noise. I can't live without it anymore! I wish I bought one decades earlier. Without it, my neighbours would probably get murdered. I'm really annoyed by other people's noise. I use a combination of white noise machine and fan sounds on my phone to drown out neighbours on various sides of the wall. 😞 Living in an apartment is the worst!

      You're welcome Louisa! As long as they don't share a room with you, a device like this could help mask noise they make. In that case, I would only get one with a headphone jack so you can listen privately. Playing white noise in a shared room is probably not going to go down very well unless they happen to love white noise too, and at the same time you do. And if you are going to use headphones, I would just save money and use an app on your phone or play white noise on your computer. If you're listening to it during the daytime, I personally don't see a reason in your case to buy a new piece of tech when you probably already have a device more than capable of playing white noise:-)

    Quick question, can you recommend a device for brown noise that can dampen my neighbour's bass?
    They're up all night an always listening to music or the tv and their sound system, even on the lowest setting, puts out enough bass to come into our apartment, cutting right through earplugs and fans.
    I think we need something large enough to have a speaker that can put out bassy brown noise without being turned all the way up as the intruding sounds aren't very loud, yet very persistent.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  Рік тому +1

      Sorry for the late reply, I've been away. Your best bet would be the LectroFan Evo or LectroFan Classic. This is exactly the video I needed, now that the neighbors are giving me a hard time in the early morning hours. I noticed that the white noise app I'm using on my phone doesn't mask the banging and stamping sounds that come through the thin walls. Do you think an actual machine could do the job, or should i look for a different alternative? P.S. i use ear plugs, too.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  3 роки тому +1

      Good to know the video was useful! Honestly, impact noise like that is very hard to block out with white noise. And if it's really loud, you might find you need to play it very loudly to block out the noise, which in itself would be less pleasant to listen to probably. I would start by investigating whether you're using the best earplugs for you and getting a good fit. What type do you use exactly? What size, material and noise reduction rating do they have?

    • @sabinesaidy
      @sabinesaidy 3 роки тому

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  3 роки тому +1

      @@sabinesaidy Looking on their website, it seems they list the noise reduction rating for two versions, but not the foam - saying only PPE earplugs have a rating. That doesn't seem to be the case in the US though, as many sleep earplugs have a NRR listed. This is the first time I've heard this, and I don't know which countries that rule applies to. So I would suggest trying at least one or two other foam earplugs, if that's the type you like. For smaller sizes, I recommend Mack's. You could try Mack's Ultra Soft, which I really like myself. They also have a slim fit and dreamgirl, which are also smaller. And if you want to explore other brands, I also like Howard Leight, Moldex, Ear Buddy, and Hearoes. Be careful with the size though as many of the ones they make are larger and meant for industrial use. That's one reason I often recommend the softer and small Mack's for sleep. I don't know where you're based, but at least one of those should be available in many countries. I'll be publishing a video in the next month or two about earplugs, so you could also look out for that as I'll talk about all of those brands (assuming I didn't mess up my footage and can't edit it!).

      I haven't tried the Douni. But from what I can gather, it's basically the same as the Dreamegg D3, which I have reviewed. If you play white noise loudly in the room you are in, then it's possible it will block out the pump noise. Hi Ethan…. Thanks for all your reviews, they’re very helpful. Can you please advise me, I’m trying to find the machine that offers the most nature sounds. I know that the Sound + Sleep has a wide variety but it’s a bit of an ugly brick with the cheap looking shiny buttons. I was considering the Lumie luxe, it can do a lot but a couple of reviews said that the speaker quality isn’t good in relative to the £200 price tag. I’m considering the Yogasleep dreamcenter or duet as the sounds are quite nice. Hatch baby rest is another possibility but I can’t find the Hatch restore in the UK and the same goes for the Loftie clock unfortunately.
    I’m really looking for rainforest sounds and tropical birds.
    What do you think Ethan? can you advise me pls on which is best for nature sound inc speaker quality. Perhaps you know of some I haven’t mentioned. Thanks.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Charlie. You're very welcome. I know what you mean about the Sound+Sleep - the design is starting to look a bit dated, but it does have a good selection of sounds. Honestly, if you're looking for something that specific - just forest and birds, I would be tempted to get a decent Bluetooth speaker and use an app on your phone. That way you can try lots of different ones until you find one that has the best nature sounds. If you have a smart speaker, you could also use that to play longer recordings of nature sounds.
      However, if you're looking for a white noise machine specifically, then really it's difficult to suggest one with great nature sounds as they all have shortish loops and a limited number of sounds. The Hatch restore is good, as you say, if you can get it. Of the machines I've reviewed recently, I'm not sure I'd recommend any as having such good forest sounds it's worth buying it just for that. You'd be paying £30-100 just for 2-3 minutes of sound.

    I've been on the hunt for the best Brown/pink Noise machine. I tried the Lectrofan, per your recommendation, but after a few weeks, it began having a strange clicking sound and some very off putting noises that woke me up in the night. (I've since read about this on Amazon, as it is apparently common). Do you have a recommendation for someone who just wants the deep brown noise similar to what I got with the Lectrofan? I also need volume control so the Dohm is out. Thank you for all of your reviews!

      I'm very sorry to hear that Julie. Were you able to get your money back or a replacement? I would start there if possible, as the device works really well when you don't get a dud! But equally, I can understand why you might be put off that brand now after a bad experience. I don't know any that only have deep brown noise, and it's rare that they have more than just two or three deeper white noise variations. Your best bet might be an app, or UA-cam if you don't mind playing through a mobile device and/or speaker.

    Hello Ethan
    Great, constructive review -
    I'm new to this and need the kind of machine that 'masks' phone conversation from my end so a nosey neighbour cannot listen in to the conversation. They (neighbour) basically stand the other side of a party internal wall every time my phone rings or i make a call - i have to leave the room to get any privacy.
    I've recently started contract work as an remote adviser and can sometimes convey sensitive information during a phone-call to clients. I need to be in front of my pc so leaving the room isn't an option. Which of these machines will 'mask' MY conversation from eavesdroppers?
    Thanks

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  2 роки тому

      Hi, you could use any of them really, as whether it does what you want or not isn't a specific feature of some machines and not of others. The problem is that the person you are speaking to might also hear the white noise, depending on how you have the audio and mic set up. I'd try the LectroFan Evo though as it has a good range of white noise, so you experiment and try to find a sound that helps mask your voice, but doesn't irritate you or the person on the end of the phone.

I like the "warm summer night" sounds, but it's short loop and has that whirring fan sound that became slightly annoying on day 3. Is there anything new and affordable out there?

      Hi Karen, have you tried the Dreamegg D3, or is that out of your budget? You can see my individual review of that on here: ua-cam.com/video/SQ-AOzuBKEU/v-deo.html
      The problem with the really low cost machines is that they usually do have short loops and/or bad speaker quality. So my advice if you want to spend under $20 is to not bother with a machine and use an App instead (assuming you don't mind using your phone to play the sounds).

    Something to keep in mind, the mind can identify patterns extremely well(survival) even in our sleep. The key advantage to the marpac is the non repeating full bodied white noise. Without a better speaker you can't get the low end waves that the marpac can achieve. The white noise is much richer than the others.

I'd still like to see more options in future models, particularly more fan speed options as the Snooz has. That one has 10 volume settings, which is essentially just 10 fan speed settings. Hi there. Thanks for the positive feedback - I really appreciate, and I'm happy to hear the video was useful. I agree about a lot of sounds that are recorded not being particularly good. The other day I was in the woods where there was some beautiful birdsong that I loved. I had the thought that it would be interesting for people who really love nature sounds to get a reasonable microphone and record a place where they actually went in person and felt especially happy and relaxed. Then they could play their own audio at night that would help transport them back to that place while lying in bed relaxing.
      Anyway, as for the white noise machines, I agree it's a shame the Marpac (now YogaSleep) devices had no volume control. There is a more modern device with an internal fan that does have volume controls - the Snooz. You can find a video of it here on my channel. The only problem is that it's twice as expensive!

    I’ve slept with rain or ocean sounds since the early 90s. Used to be a cd on a nice amp with full range tower speakers with 15” subs. Now, I use a Sonos 5.1 system & surround sound mixed mp3 files on repeat. I never understood these little boxes. They just sound cheap. Having full range audio from speakers around the room is far superior. Most of the time these machines have very short tracks that have super noticeable looping points. Hard pass.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  4 місяці тому +1

      If you're an adult listening to white noise and have the money and environment to install such a high-quality speaker system in your room, then sure, there isn't a white noise machine on the planet that will come anywhere close to the audio you can reproduce through your speakers.
      Many people use a small sound machine in an infant or young child's room though, so installing a Sonos 5.1 system in a one year old's bedroom probably isn't on a parent's to-do list. It's also not advisable to play audio loudly to children, which is one reason some manufacturers intentionally keep the speaker size small.
      It would be nice if they were all small, but still sound good and have long loops, so that's one point where I do agree with your criticism.
      And then there are people who don't want WiFi or Bluetooth in their bedroom, which many (though not all nowadays) white noise machines cater to.
      Then there's the flexibility to quickly move them from one room to another, or take them with you when travelling. Packing a whopping great big Sonos speaker in a suitcase would be tricky!
      So yes, you're right in that it's possible to have much, much better audio if you put your mind to it. But little white noise machines meet a range of niche needs.

From time to time in my reviews and comments I hint that we're all waiting for one of those companies to put their expertise into more sleep products. @nosleeplessnights1  2 роки тому +1

      That's one with of looking at it, yes. No manufacturer claims they have noise cancelling tech in them though. It's more of a casual language people use to describe the way they work. They don't even have to be louder per se - it's more about masking noise with a noise that's more consistent and that you enjoy the sound of, and ultimately control.

      That's a tricky one. I'd suggest one with a headphone jack to create a better barrier as all that impact noise is hard to block out with white noise in the room. Maybe try the Evo as that has a headphone jack. You could also just download a free app on your phone and try it with headphones first before investing in a white noise machine.

    Hi, I live in a condo and need a machine that will help my neighbors sleep. We have an infant in the bedroom who is up at night crying so I need something that will help the neighbors in the next apartment and the one downstairs not hear the cries. What do you suggest?

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  4 роки тому

      Hi Pat, that's very considerate of you as a neighbor. Have they actually mentioned anything, or are you anticipating them having trouble sleeping? Some people are better at sleeping through noise than others, and it may not even be a problem.
      If you have spoken to them, and already offered to get them a machine, then I think any of the first few would be fine. It depends on what they enjoy listening to at night, so it's hard to say what would work best for them. Perhaps ask them if they know if they like listening to white noise, fan sounds or nature sounds and then choose one from there.

I have tinnitus&used to play electronic w.n. + waterfalls tracks together as my fave sounds to effectively mask ringing of ears. I got so used to the ringing, I ceased needing w.n. • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately none of them will be able to block that kind of noise completely, and you would probably need the volume so loud to have any chance of masking the barking that it would be unpleasant to listen to! You could perhaps try one with a headphone jack, such as the Evo. But I would only even think about trying that if your normal headphones and music help block out the dogs. My advice would be to do some research into how to block sound through the window, such as installing a double glazing screen window and using acoustic caulk to block even the smallest of gaps in the window frame.

    Your evaluations are good, but what's missing is any sense of obsolescence. How long will any of the devices you reviewed last? One month? A couple of weeks? What goes wrong with any of them over time? No answer.

    • @nosleeplessnights1
      @nosleeplessnights1  Рік тому +2

      You're absolutely right, and I apologize for not addressing the long-term durability and potential issues that might arise with these white noise machines in enough depth. I'll definitely consider this in my future reviews, especially when I focus on a single product and have more time to consider more factors when choosing them.
      To explain more about this point though, there are some fundamental difficulties in addressing obsolescence with white noise machines.
      If I state that a particular device I owned lasted for one year before developing a fault on one of the soundtracks, then that's just one person's experience. It doesn't mean the entire batch that were manufactured at the same time in the same factory will develop the same specific fault in the same time frame.
      Having said that, I do sometimes highlight how flimsy a device feels in other categories, such as sleep headphones where you can sometimes see thin cables connecting at probable stress points. But since white noise machines are housed inside solid casings, it's not easy to predict how robust a device may be over time. They also tend to sit on a shelf or desk rather than being handled a lot, so any visible weak points are again harder to judge.
      Furthermore, I've used, tested, and reviewed these products for many years, and only one has developed a fault - and only after two years. So in my experience, it's not a common problem.
      On the other hand, I spend a lot of time reading other peoples' reviews, particularly on Amazon to get a feel for what other customers say (assuming you can believe all the reviews there...) so I know that of course some people do get devices that develop faults over time. Perhaps I've just been lucky.
      I think it's likely the case that some devices are faulty when sent, or soon after, as is the case with many electronics - particularly cheaper electronics. So it's more of a lottery rather than a case of me saying "the LectroFan is guaranteed to last one year, the Avantek three months, the Dreamegg two months."
      Most of them come with guarantees and warranties too, which is something I will remember to point out in the future.
      In answer to the specific timeframes you mentioned, I don't think any of them have a high likelihood of breaking within a couple of weeks or one month unless there is a manufacturing error, something goes wrong in transit, or you're simply unlucky, in which case you should be able to get a refund or replacement.
      And in terms of what goes wrong with them, well, some people say they simply stop working, or the soundtracks sometimes have interference, for example. In more recent reviews, I sometimes point out that ambient tracks may have a kind of white noise in the background, which I'm not sure should be there. Or if you turn the volume up too high, the speaker distorts with tracks like thunder and rain. But those issues I think are more likely due to the quality of the device rather than a unique fault developing.
      Once again, thanks for the feedback. I'm always glad to hear criticisms of my videos as it helps me improve them and hopefully be more helpful in the future:-)

      Hi Norm. Unfortunately, reducing the noise from neighbors who live above you isn't easy. Personally, I'd go with earplugs first, either with or without white noise in addition to help a bit. If you search online you can find plenty of websites that discuss home improvement techniques for noise coming from above, but it tends to involve a fair bit of work and/or money. Other things that might help are hanging some material up there, and putting more material and objects in the bedroom in general to help absorb some sound waves bouncing around. To answer your question though, I think any have the potential to help distract you from listening to the neighbors, but if they are very loud, none of them will cut it out completely for you. I'd try the LectroFan as it's pretty loud and has a good range of white noise to choose from - either the Evo (if it's available) or the Lectrofan classic will work.

      Hi ble ble
      Glad the review was helpful. To be honest, I don't think it would help much in your situation anyway. To drown out the noise you make, you would need to have it so loud, and right next to an adjoining wall, that the extra sound would probably annoy them just as much. And it is unlikely to block out the sound of screaming.
      I think you would have a better long-term outcome if you tried some self-help techniques for sleep talking and nightmares, if that's what is happening. If you can see a doctor, that might help to get a diagnosis. But if not, there are lots of good websites with techniques for relaxation before going to bed and other steps you can take which might help reduce how disrupted your sleep is. In some cases, just spending some time before going to sleep trying to put your mind at ease and in a relaxed state can help.
      So if it were me, rather than spending money on a machine which probably won't help, I'd look at free ways to tackle the root of the problem. And in this case, information is key:-)
      All the best!

      I don't know of any white noise machine that does that. What you describe is essentially active noise cancellation, which is more in the realm of noise cancelling headphones. There are many excellent headphones that do that, but comfort in bed and battery life tends to be an issue.
      As for the updated version, it's been on my mind for a very long time to do and hopefully I will in the next year. It takes me a very, very long time to do these kind of multi product comparisons, so they keep getting pushed down my to-do list!
      In the meantime, I did update the written comparison on my website not long ago.
