Excellent Display, Good Battery Life, Great Build Quality and Superb Speakers make the Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 a great buy. Biggest negative is the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Let me know what you think.
I just ordered mine M5 8" coming next week, using M2 8" so i think that will be a great upgrade, don't think im going to be disappointed. Excellent review, by far the best i found👍, No headphone jack? no problem for me, can live without it.
Enjoying this cool review from my Huawei MediaPad M3 8.4. This is already a great tablet. It lasts long, have great speakers already, etc. Only bad note is the non-stock OS... But you know, after a couple of weeks you forget about it.
I have the previous version. M3 8.4. LOVE this tablet. The sound on this version is stellar as well. I wonder what the main differences are between M3 & M5
Can't wait for the 10" video. Old lady here, with poor vision. So I have found that, for me, the 10" is my sweet spot, as long as the screen is on par with Samsung or the iPad. Also would prefer to have the 3.5mm head phone jack built in because I must rely on earphones in my tiny senior apartment, with a roommate! Excellent review, as always.
Had to Edit: Phirst Phist! Great work T. Huawei FTW. I can't believe I'm using a Huawei as my daily driver. I think Xiaomi and Huawei are smashing it for 6.
I have the M3 Lite 8", but I kinda wish I sprung for the M5 8", it was going to be a ballpark of $120 more depending on the seller. I should have taken into account the faster processor, better RAM, speakers, USB C over Micro USB and the "future proofing" of having higher specs. The only advantages were price and the inclusion of a 3.5 audio jack. The iPad mini 5 just came out and iPad OS 13 will be out for it as well. Honestly, I like the M3 and the M5 8" form factor over the iPad Mini's. The ability to single hand the narrower Huawei M3/M8 just ups the portability factor and 16:10 aspect ratio and is better for video consumption, though the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPads is arguably better for productivity. It kills me they haven't given the iPad mini the "Pro" treatment with the thinner bezels and better screen to tablet ratio. The mini 5 also finally has pen support though you have to use the last gen Apple Pencil and we are STILL stuck with the lightning adapter for the mini in 2019. It will be tough choice on what will be my next "mini tablet" because the newer iPad mini 5 will have a longer life span over the M5 which is over a year old now, but the M5 despite the age is closer to what I want in a mini.
+Andrew Marc David Hi Here is my take on Huawei MediaPad M5 Your review is spot on except for one thing. _Battery life_while using _Bluetooth earphones_ I was also a bit disappointed because while it has excellent speakers one does not want to use it while binge watching, right? especially at night. Curious to see how it works with a Bluetooth keyboard and eventually a mouse in order to make a laptop replacement. Mobility is everything these days! Looking forward to seeing a set up like that put to the test if you can of course!
A review on Amazon mentioned that Wifi and Bluetooth can't be used together, at least on the 8.4 tablet. Can anyone confirm/refute this? Seems unlikely since a common use case is streaming content + bluetooth headphones.
Same. Tho there's a thread at the XDA section for the M5 (better off googl'ing for it, don't wanna get flagged as a spammer) regarding this issue. Some people are reporting they don't get the problem if they swap to 5ghz wifi. But others are reporting it doesn't matter. Doesn't seem to impact 100% of owners self-reporting. I've ordered it off Amazon, will try to remember to give my input on this issue when it arrives!
I purchased the 10.8 version about a month ago and I can say there is a problem with Bluetooth and wifi. It does work somewhat, it's just that you're streaming speed is slowed tremendously and everything buffers. As soon as I get off Bluetooth it's back to streaming at high speeds and no buffering. This tablet is great but Bluetooth and wifi is a flaw, that is my only issue with it but for me it's not a deal breaker.
Thanks 🙏 for an understandable review a added plus would be talk a bit slower for us older people ( Me ) would be a tad easier to follow...Nice voice 😊
Thanks for the review - particularly for providing the nits brightness figure... haven't seen that anywhere else. Would have liked to see you show the screen in outdoor / sunlight conditions and hear your view as to how it compares to other tablets in this area... maybe something for the future? Thanks again! Marcel
Hi Andrew. What is the call quality like for Hangouts or a VoIP call (over speakerphone, of course). Does the person you're talking to struggle with echoes or other hearing issues when you use it in lieu of a phone? The European LTE version has a phone app, so I'm hoping the wifi version has decent noise cancellation. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your opinion.
Hi. Have you had any more new updates since doing this video such as enhancements to battery life, performance, security updates, the newer EMUI 8.1 or 9.0? Screen quality good in terms of sharpness, clarity & resolution? Any dark or night mode? Have you tried a different launcher? Can it play UA-cam in full 1080p 60fps and 4K 30/60fps? Would you say it can withstand the off splashes of water?
Just got mine, I love it takes 4k and plays 4k videos. There is no real image stabilization but third party apps help, now the USBC does NOT I repeat not support HDMI but it does Mirror share so the tblet will output to TV, tested with Samsug 4k TV. Headphone jack not a big deal it charges fast and comes with a dongle to adapt, plus this is the blutooth era. Price is no brainer for features. can attach a external USB hard drive formated in the old style of like fat 32 I think
May i know how do you use microsoft office using physical keyboard with this huawei m5 8.4? Because it does not have desktop mode right? I can only use if the tablet is put vertically but not horizontally..
Great review, looks like a good choice to replace my Nexus 7. I'm glad the headphone jack is being fazed out of high end devices... despite the constant whining! I hope tablet innovation keeps coming, it seems like the technology and larger sizes of phones kept tablet sales down, but some of these latest tablets are really showing promise. I think we're at a breaking point with phone size, can't really get bigger without going full tablet, so maybe the trend will be just to have an actual tablet and a 'regular' size phone like in the 'old days' 😜
Hi Andrew. May I ask what is the current and latest Android & EMUI version for this tablet? Is there now a full dark mode? Can you disable or uninstall those pesky Huawei 1st-party apps? What gestures navigations do you like using on this tablet? Cheers.
difficult to get an American review of the LTE version which is far more superior for travel if you require web access for work. I have sat on a beach with a portable Bluetooth keypad and done a days work, taken internet classes and posted info in real time. It is about time that the USA joined the rest of the world look at really the only version to buy which is the LTE.
Hi man great video, but it's the kirin 960 not 860. How is,the gaming performance?? It's the iPad 2018 or huawei mediapad m5 8.4 for my brother wich you would recommend??
I've been looking for an Android Tablet to replace my now DEAD Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. I cant say I have seen anything intriguing, other than the new Samsung tablets. My issue with them though, and with my tablet when I bought it is I despise Touchwiz, or Grace UX, or whatever the new name they call it. I rooted it about a month after purchase and had been running Cyanogen Mod on it and what a difference. It felt like a whole new tablet. However, I realized that the tablet had several issues, especially with the battery. It would shut down randomly, freeze and too often shut down when it was fully charged, and wouldn't boot back until you plugged it in. I have been looking at the M5 pro as I feel the 8 inch range is too small for me I've found. So far, I've seen nothing but positive reviews of this tablet. I am seriously contemplating getting one, so i would love a review to see your thoughts.
When playing games i have to hold the tabled exactly where the sound standing. That going to cause problem in the sound. Can i turn off half of the sound speakers? Because if not M5 is not worth much.
Can someone tell me is this tablet have some software for turning off the half of each of its speakers? Because when holding it my hands would be exactly on the speakers. Its a big problem for the devise if not.
Other sources indicate the that the processor used is the Kirin 960 (4 of 8 cores at 2.4 GHz), not 960s (and later in the video 860s) shown early in your video, which is slower. How sure are you of your info on this spec? Regarding the common complaint of no headphone jack - just leave the USB-C adapter connected to your favorite earbuds/headphones. It is not a big deal.
You are right, i own this tablet and it has the regular Kirin 960(2,36Ghz) and the GPU (Mali G71mp8) clocks at 1037mhz not at 900mhz like mentioned on the video
I play PUBG on my iPhone 6s Plus and it does a great job but im looking for a device that can play it as good or better on a bigger screen. Can this device handle that or should I move up the the larger Pro model (not the one with the stylus)?
Great review! Very good tablet at a decent price! Decent speakers are are such a rarity these days! I am thinking that a Bluetooth headset will alleviate any issues with the lack of a headphone jack. Will share later today when I get home from work.
Hey , i think this was a great review . How ever in writing you put it had a kirin 860 and i nearly had a heart atack .😂i know it wont matter know tho . Still you got a like and sub
I have a nexus 10 still it works for what I use it for. It's nice for reading, some UA-cam, bedtime Netflix that's all I really need from a tablet... more demanding stuff I'm going to be using either my phone or my laptop which are both more powerful. I think most people do this or did this and that's why Android tablets have largely died.
Having major issues with printing from this tablet. It'll only print blank pages, but my other devices print fine on this same printer so I know it's not a printer problem, any ideas ??????
The speaker & the processor are good selling points. Usually, android tablets always have its’ catch, like low powered processor or cheap build quality or other trade off but again, it’s strange to buy an android tablet these days when smartphones already have fullview display
Thanks. I will await your review of the 10-inch pro version. If you could demonstrate how it works with the Autodesk Sketchbook app please. Excellent reviews.
@bug bug I actually bought mediapad pro already. Yeah it is a bit too big for reading. I find it easier to hold in landscape even for reading. I have the keyboard as well. So most of the time I use it with the keyboard even for reading because I take notes on it as well. I'm loving it so far. The only thing that can be improved is the mpen. It's slow, lagging. I'm not using mpen that much, so not a big issue for me.
One of the few Android tablet left, but it lacks a HPJ, EMUI is not that great and the SOC could be better in my opinion. I wanted this Mediapad but I think the SHIELD K1 would be my last tablet...
the missing headphone jack is really hurtful. what if you're battery runs out, but you want to finish the video you're watching and want to connect the loading cable already? being forced to choose between loading or headphone use feels strange. but besides that, I think thats my new tab. thx for the video.
Didn't know what I was doing when I bought the 10 inch version earlier model of this anybody else's would be twice the price for the same spec no contest
If Apple did not release a refresh for the iPad mini, I will get this tablet instead. I just hope it won't be as expensive as the iPad mini 4 when it reaches my country.
I change my Nexus 7 for that M5. The size of this Nexus 7 is too close to my smartphone. On the M5, the screen, build quality, contrast and performances are very better.
@@MIA7Xthies I'm looking to upgrade from my K1, how do you like it? I want a small form factor tablet. This seems like the only option left. Really wish there was a small form factor chrome os tablet, but nothing yet.
@@munozyoshi - Agree on the 8 inch form factor even with most phones nowadays being 6 inches. A ten inch tablet for media consumption is a bit too large/bulky for me. Samsung still makes an 8 inch tablet but it's heavy, no finger print sensor, dual speakers and pretty much entry level.
I have the m5 8.4 and this is what i think of it. To many bloatware. Battery is to small. Tablet is quit thin. No accessory's for the 8.4 inch for sale in europe netherlands like screenprotectors, covers, tpu sillicon , on off switch and volume button are on the wrong site when using it horizontal. Canot remove anoying swifkey. Had to put on a classic keyboard app , just to get the nice size keys.. Big camera sticking out of the body. Very High price 350 euro.
I wish it came with a digital pen/stylus then it would be great for my needs. I need a nice tablet with the digital pen/stylus for art. Nice price for the premium build. Thanks for your review.
The specs are wrong, it has the regular Kirin 960 CPU (2,36Ghz) and not the 960s (2,1Ghz) the GPU is the Mali G71mp8 and it clocks at 1037mhz not at 900mhz like you mentioned in the video...i own this tablet and it's maybe the best android tablet in the market for the price
I dont know Andrew, you put it a 10 on hardware but also you re complaining about it does not have 3,5 jack, so thats weird... anyway great review maybe a little bit of bias I guess but it is fine for me
Juan Carlos Lobo lol cllllearly he's nooooot paid to rate it highly.. because if he can be disappointed about it not having a headphone jack but it still gets a full 10, then the headphone jack is software and you can just download one no biggie.. and let's not forget that they put an "s" version chip which is clocked SLOWER THAN THE REGULAR 960...
It causes problems when connected to wifi and bluetooth at the same time whether streaming Netflix or watching live.....but only with both together......wifi alone is fine and if its bluetooth without wifi its fine
Having the headphone jack in this day n age with Bluetooth becoming more common its like a cd player with a cassette tape player. Nobody uses wire headphones anymore. Its just weird seeing a wire headphones plug to a nice pad like the M5. Even if u don't have wireless headphones its an easy fix just go buy one if u can afford this tablet the headphones shouldn't be a problem n even if u have wire headphones just keep the adapter connect to the headphones u won't even notice it. So i think its a good move on their part not having the headphone jack cuz dropping it in the water its never good but the headphone jack compared to other openings its like a dam. With the headphone jack hole, u drop it in the water its guaranteed gonna be flooded pretty much no chance for recovery but without it way less waters gonna go in good chance its still fixable but with the jack doesn't matter how fast u grab it, its pretty much a goner. N u missed another best thing about the M5 its the screen recorder with internal sound which no screen recorder apps have due to legal rights or something Its awesome for playing live streaming games, its slick its smooth n comes with a cover. The gold color looks freaking beautiful!! For a gamer n media this is by far the best tab I've ever had imo
Excellent Display, Good Battery Life, Great Build Quality and Superb Speakers make the Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 a great buy. Biggest negative is the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Let me know what you think.
Andrew Marc David does it have stylus support
Andrew Marc David hi which will you suggest for media use the 10.8 inch or the 8.4 inch many thanks
Hi Andrew. Thx for the detailed review.
Can you confirm if you can stream audio over Bluetooth while on WiFi?
The previous M3 had issues with this.

Andrew Marc David I have switched from the iPhone X so must be doing something alright. It's the camera right 👍

my samsung galaxy s2 did this after 1 year... really good contrast and black while the screen is good, but mine didnt last and you still risk burnin
How do we watch 2K videos on this device? I noticed UA-cam videos only go up to 1080p.
Unfortunately you can't. 1080p as far as it goes on this device.
Thanks. I will await your review of the 10-inch pro version. If you could demonstrate how it works with the Autodesk Sketchbook app please. Excellent reviews.
Love your reviews always... It is a good tablet indeed by the looks of things.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Do u think m5 pro worth the extra price? I'm just using it for reading and study.
Streaming of Netflix,HBO..works on FHD? Thanks
Yeah, according to some users, after an OTA update, Netflix and Prime Video will play as it should.
The new ROG phone from ASUS would be so cool with your style of review. Hope to see it on your playlist soon.
Question: Can you watch Netflix in 2k? Can you select youtube resolution in 1440p?
Andrew, I don't see bluetooth mentioned in the specs. Can you verify whether or not it has it?
Yes it does have Bluetooth and it works very well.
Thanks man!
Best tablet!.
Is this tablet have a pen ?
If yes from where I can buy it ?
No, don't support pen
Good video. Hi from Moscow )
the missing headphone jack is really hurtful. what if you're battery runs out, but you want to finish the video you're watching and want to connect the loading cable already? being forced to choose between loading or headphone use feels strange. but besides that, I think thats my new tab. thx for the video.
Still thinking...buy or not. I'm still on nexus 7, and it still works ok.
I change my Nexus 7 for that M5. The size of this Nexus 7 is too close to my smartphone. On the M5, the screen, build quality, contrast and performances are very better.
@@Yahren I just bought this to upgrade my Nvidia Shield K1. Hopefully I like it as much as I did that little guy!
I don't think not having a headphone jack is a deal breaker as an adapter has been provided. 😁
Does this support a stylus?
The 10inch Pro version supports and comes with a stylus.
The dimming-bug is a deal breaker though.
I wish it came with a digital pen/stylus then it would be great for my needs. I need a nice tablet with the digital pen/stylus for art. Nice price for the premium build. Thanks for your review.
There is a stylus for the 10-in pro version which I am expecting to review very soon.
I like it .. great tablet
Anyone else have issues with the performance on this thing? Does not run as smooth as I had hoped.
It causes problems when connected to wifi and bluetooth at the same time whether streaming Netflix or watching live.....but only with both together......wifi alone is fine and if its bluetooth without wifi its fine
Can it play 1440p video on youtube
1080p
LTE?
N u missed another best thing about the M5 its the screen recorder with internal sound which no screen recorder apps have due to legal rights or something
Its awesome for playing live streaming games, its slick its smooth n comes with a cover. The gold color looks freaking beautiful!! For a gamer n media this is by far the best tab I've ever had imo
Wow! that's Great!!
Mi pad 4?
How come no one ever when reviewing this does not include using it as a phone?
