Great description. I literally asked google “why was Mario 2 so different?” This was perfect, and answered all my questions. Did you go over the fact that it was actually a reskinned Nintendo Japan game? This was due to the original Mario 2 Japan version was deemed too difficult by Nintendo America. So, Nintendo scrambled, and re-skinned a different game that was never released here in N. America. That’s why all the enemy characters are so different.
Yeah I remember hearing about it being a reskin of doki doki panic thats why I loved the game so much because it was different from what we saw around the time which was a nice touch.

I have this and my SNES in the living room. I always get stuck, though. Should check out a playthrough so I can cover new ground.
