I bought the Taito one, great little device that's genuinely jeans pocket friendly. I preferred the aesthetic and Taito games are not as freely or cheaply available as Capcom arcade games. I did buy the Gaelco arcade collection 1 and renovation carts to expand the library I can play on it but I'm not collecting, I'll buy the odd cart that peaks my interest, literally stuff I didn't play back in the day or never heard of is what I'm looking at.

I've seen those new Taito/Capcom portables around. They do look pretty nice, but I can't help think that the cost - $60-$65 might be better placed towards an Analogue Pocket. I have the original Evercade + first 10 game packs, and I enjoyed it, but the Pocket really gave me exactly what I was looking for in a handheld. The screen was so amazingly clear, which is required to sell you on the DMG-1, GB Pocket, GB Light, GB Color, and GBA shader effects. As someone who owned the original GB (Xmas 1989), It was the closest I've seen in portable form. It looked so much like the old green/yellow graphics, but was super vivid and of course backlit. I own several DMGs now, but unfortunately they all need ribbon fixes, since the glue has dried up. So the Pocket came at a good time. Being able to load up my old games is some nostalgic fun, and if I bring it out I'll just play the roms from the sdcard.
I also bought the Pocket cart adapters for GG, PCE/TG16/SGX, Lynx, and NGPC. So those are fun as well.. The GG has a similar look, and playing it blur free is a joy, same with Turbo HuCards. Now I can sell off my Turbo Express, ;) , and NGPC games don't require sitting under a 1000 watt bulb! I was happy to get a Dock with it also. I probably play 50% of my time on an external display, Analogue really needs to get on top of releasing an update for DAC support though. I want to use all of those classic openFPGA consoles on my Wega CRT! OK... I'm wasting everyone's time here. I tend to get carried away when it comes to talking about games.
    Nice review BTW! , Matt

Great video review. I just ordered one because I like retro games and it’s nice to have a small handheld.

I loved mine. I have a exp. But i ended up giving my tito one to my brother for Christmas with a couple game carts. I didn't wanna drive in the snow to my local game shop. I try to support the local businesses. I buy everything I can from that shop. But the snow and time was issue so i gave my personal one to him. Hopefully he loves it

For what it is, I think it's a great little pocket gamer. It's crazy that for 60 dollars you get this much and when yhe original NES Gameboy came out, it was 89.99! Oh how things change!!

Hey that wasn't so bad though for 1989 lol. You got Tetris and headphones with it and batteries. I love Gameboy. Tetris still works 34 years later for me and I still play. Test of time. Tetris, Super Mario Land, Motorcross Maniacs. One nice thing is portable gaming back then was cheaper. Now switch on the go is pricey lol. The thing that was great was portable games for Gameboy era and such were meant to be portable. Now portable games on steam deck or switch are giant console tv games on the go. Can't just jump in anymore and go.

I think since it is about the same size as a Gameboy advance screen it's great for games like Duke nukem advance or sunsoft cart with the Gameboy blaster master. It's a nice option to have with the exp.

Great review PDubs but I don't think this one is for me, it's just too darn small (TWSS;). I just bought an R36S and that's about as small a device as I'm willing to go.
I wish Evercade all the best, I think their cartridge based approach is super nostalgic.

I would expect the screen to be appreciably worse than the EXP, but seemingly none of the reviewers mention this. The high resolution of the EXP screen really matters -both in pixel perfect mode and otherwise.

That sucks about the screen. I got the Taito one and I like it. I have huge hands but feels good for me. I'm a big fan of the original Gameboy and Gameboy Color though and I prefer holding portables this way over wide. Switch, Vita and the DS cramp my hands up fairly easy.

The a and b buttons are reversed compared to Nintendo’s layout. So in mega man will shoot and jump will be all messed up with your muscle memory. Not sure if you can fix the button config. Noticed when you were playing final fight.

The EXP has been terrible for me. It runs so hot I'm afraid it's going to damage my carts. There is a gap in the plastic on the unit by the cartridge slot, the battery is terrible. I'm sad I bought it. This super pocket is less than half the cost and performs so much better but I really wanted that form factor of the EXP.

    • @PDubsArcadeLoft
      @PDubsArcadeLoft  5 місяців тому

Yeah I had a battery issue with the EXP and can only play it via the charging cable and bought it from eBay so Evercade wouldn't replace it. Just bough the super pocket to replace it.

  • @spannerrazor87

Picked one of these up just this week and I think there's lots to like - I was genuinely impressed with the screen and nippiness of the system.
Was considering an exp but even down at £100 (versus £50 on the Super Pocket) it felt expensive for the handful of carts I really want. So this really fit the bill.
Emulation speed and sound seem decent - most of these machines I only played on MAME so I'm no purist on that aspect - so that's another tick.
    Some negatives
I'm not a good Street Fighter player so I can't comment too much on the d-pad but my reliability wasn't high on fireballs and spinning kicks. Perhaps an issue with me or the d-pad. Definitely agree that the shoulder buttons are a difficult position and I wonder if button remaps could help with some games? It seems it's not supported (and removes the plug and play that I'm sure is a design philosophy) but it could help.
One does wonder about the future for it with no Wi-Fi too. One or two games have required evercade systems updates to run and this doesn't haven't that option so will it maintain forward compatibility?
Overall, happy enough with my purchase - if I could get a copy of the original Duke Trilogy Cart at retail price I'd be even happier.

They should have conceded that they made a mistake in getting rid of the original handheld and reissued that instead of a totally new product and packaging. Must have cost them more to launch the Super Pockets after stating that thr original was become more costly to produce.

@@PDubsArcadeLoft They're from the UK despite their products being manufactured abroad. Their excuse in bringing out the EXP at double the price of the original handheld at the time was that the original handheld was getting too expensive to produce.... but they had no issues seemingly in spending money setting up another subsidiary company in the form of Hyper Mega Tech to market and sell two new, but inferior, handhelds in the form of the Super Pockets cheaper than what the original handheld was originally selling for at launch and half the price that they ended up selling the original handheld for later on.
