I watched the original movie last night. It's a FANTASY. It skipped all the hardships you would encounter living like this in the wild - there are hundreds of needs that would come up ESPECIALLY in winter. Winter would be IMPOSSIBLE to live off nothing but shooting wild animals. Even the BULLETS - where would you get them if your only contact is an airplane that MIGHT appear to see you once or twice a year. You would run out of EVERYTHING, your needs, your wants - food, spices, flour, yeast, sweets, materials needed to preserve food: vinegar, vodka, SALT. You would RUN OUT of all these things one needs to go to the store for every week. If you bought enough supplies for a year {how could you bring them in that tiny plane?} where would you put them? And the way this ONE MAN built this lovely real house - not a plain cabin - with a large rock chimney - in less than one summer - IMPOSSIBLE. Besides that, it all depends on two people. If ONE of them gets SICK it all falls apart. Just like when the child got sick he had to get some place for a doctor, was impossible, but by fantasy he did it. Animals get sick too, or injured. They have several animals IN THE HOUSE - two BEARS. How do they FEED them? A bear becomes 100 lbs within a year, which requires at least 5 lbs each of food, minimum. And they will find & eat everything in your house! This movie is so UNREALISTIC, it's the musings of a city clicker who knows next to nothing of hardship & plain necessity in a homestead. You need CHICKENS for eggs & meat. You need a COW for milk, yogurt, cream, & cheese. You have to know how to make these things, too, & you need rennet for cheese to start. You need a PEN for the chickens or else the wild animals will kill them all & if you pen them you need to supply FOOD for them, they cannot run outside & ge their own if they are penned in. This movie is IMPOSSIBLE - pure FANTASY. The only good thing about it is all the animals - I loved all of that. But kept thinking how insane the assumptions of the lifestyle are - that they could survive that way. believe me, they would all be dead. They would have to leave to survive.
Many people have successfully homesteaded in Alaska and Canada with only what they brought in with them, it's hard but not impossible....I agree on the bears in the house and how they befriend every animal like pets. I guess that was just for a Disney type effect so ppl would watch it on TV ....also there were no wolves in Montana in the 70s they were reintroduced in the 90s
living FREE? It ain't free. IF you make it you will have to have all the supplies, tools livestock, medicines, someone in your group has to be a nurse or doctor, knowledge of survival skills, etc. Seeds & plants for food, knowledge of agriculture, water to water all your plants that you'll have to CARRY. Water for yourself. These people are DRESSED in beautiful new clothes all the time - your clothes will turn to RAGS. And they must be washed & dried. What do you do in winter about the clothes & your bodies? And you'll have to work from morning 'till night to maintain your 'freedom' nature paradise.
